Comments about Shimano UN54 Bottom Bracket:

The UN54 is probably one of the most underrated bike components in existence. There are very few bottom brackets out that have better seals, or last as long. The bearings on mine are still smooth as butter and show no signs of play, after about 4,000 miles of touring and 5,000 miles of commuting over the last three years — and the latter frequently in rain, snow and road salt. Other bottom brackets are stiffer, but this one has been proven to last.

Clean and grease the threads, tapers and crankbolts, and use a torque wrench to properly install — or have a shop mechanic do it. Some people used to be worried about the plastic cup, but it's more durable, and easier to install in frames that have seen some wear and rust.
