Comments about Motorola T9500XLR Two-Way Radios - 2 Pack:
These work fine if the battery is fully charged. Once it gets low, the signal strength drops drastically. Don't expect 25 miles, but I've had them work at 5 miles. The charger is compatible with other models, which is handy.

Comments about Motorola T9500XLR Two-Way Radios - 2 Pack:
I've gotten reception of 6-7 miles over water with these. In gently rolling terrain, the transmissions get scratchy around one mile of separation. With hilly terrain and separation over one mile, my reception quality ranged from poor to non-existent. They provide better range, however, than the lesser Motorola models (one of which I returned for this model) and are smaller as well.

Comments about Motorola T9500XLR Two-Way Radios - 2 Pack:
We use it within a 10 acre area and have had a really hard time understanding each other using this radio. Also, you have to wait about 2-3 seconds after hitting the talk button before talking, as it takes a while for the signal to go (if you begin talking immediately after holding the button down, the person on the other end will miss your first couple words).
I think this might be a marginally ok unit for adults, though I'm sure there are better sounding radios out there, but for talking with kids it's definitely not recommended.
We returned the first one we bought as one of the units did not work at all (battery problem). Got the same one again, but will be returning these as they have just not met our expectations. Signal strength is probably fine - it's the sound quality. We have tested it at very short range - it's just the clarity/static of what comes through. When we hear our neighbors talking on their radios they sound much clearer than ours. We are in a fairly dense urban setting (not buildings, just lots of houses) and have not tried it elsewhere much.
Makes a good weather radio though.
