Comments about Garmin eTrex H GPS Receiver:

I use this little guy for recreational hiking and mountaineering as well as on a search and rescue team. A lot of GPS units these days come with so many bells and whistles you'd expect them to do all the traveling for you; they're for people who don't know how to use a GPS. Along with a good map, compass, and some decent navigational skills, this unit is an excellent tool. The 'H' in the name tells you that it uses a high sensitivity chip which maintains signal well in canyons and under trees. When I went to purchase this the [...] actually tried to convince me that this wasn't enough of a GPS for me and that I needed to buy one with a bigger screen so I could see maps on it (which are poor quality and expensive on their own), but all that does is use more battery power, weigh more, and complicate things. Learn to use a GPS and a map and this is all you need!

Comments about Garmin eTrex H GPS Receiver:

My previous eTrex was beat up by eight years of hard use, so I replaced it with an eTrex H (which I admittedly haven't owned for long). The new one has retained all that I liked about its predecessor: small size, ruggedness, fast & simple user interface. The new "high sensitivity" receiver is a major improvement: it's much better at picking up satellites and much faster at calculating its position. I also like the new ability to calculate sunrise & sunset. This is a great GPS for hiking & geocaching. For driving & boating, you'd probably want a fancier one with maps.

Comments about Garmin eTrex H GPS Receiver:

You don't need a gps with built in maps for backpakcing! You have to carry a map with you as backup so make it your primary source and use this great and inexpensive GPS unit for coordinating. Awesome for backpacking. I design my route on Topo!, download the route onto the etrex, print out the map, and I am off.

Comments about Garmin eTrex H GPS Receiver:

This is an excellent product at a great price! The same can be said about Delorme map software and the SPOT satellite locator beacon. I bought all three at REI for less than the cost of one more expensive GPS unit.

I travel on unmarked dirt roads in remote areas of Nevada with no cell phone coverage or fellow travelers.
Take the wrong fork in the road, run out of gas, and die.

Before leaving on a trip I print maps which have lat. & lon. grid marks using my Delorme map software. Before taking any fork in the road I can get my exact lat. & lon. from the GPS. In the event of an accident or breakdown I can activate my SPOT satellite locator beacon distress call. There is no way the coyotes are going to make a meal out of me.

Comments about Garmin eTrex H GPS Receiver:

My Geko 201's case disintegrated so I got the eTrex H. This new GPS is similar to the 201 in size and features but far more sensative. It also has much longer battery life. It is new to the market and as of 9/07, is not compatible with my old geocashing software or with the Garmin software update tool. Fortunately, there are no updates right now and in the NMEMA OUT mode, it works fine with my moving map display software. One reason the geocahsing software is important is that the eTrex H does not permit editing or close up viewing of tracks as was possible with the Geko 201. It is also takes more than a single push of a button to define a waypoint. Not a big deal, but different. Warm start is amazingly fast. Sometimes I am up and locked in just a few seconds.

Comments about Garmin eTrex H GPS Receiver:

We used this GPS on a 4 day backpacking trip. It works well when it gets a good signal, and is fun to use while hiking. Downsides: it does not include any mapping software (the good thing about that is that it makes it a less expensive unit) and that it does not hold signal too well when satellites are obscured. It can only get a decent signal when used inside a car, and other covered areas. However, though it certainly shouldn't be your primary directional gear, it is a lot of fun, works well, is easy to use, and is worth the price if you just enjoy being able to track yourself, determine altitude, etc.

This is an excellent product. You should be aware, however, that if you want to down load way points from your PC, you will need a cable and software -- at a price of about [$]. The eTrex Venture HC comes with both and is, therefore, about the same price if you want these accessories.

Comments about Garmin eTrex H GPS Receiver:

Have used my little garmin hiking the fells of the Lake District, Cumbria, England. Suprised and gratified to discover that it can be set for the British Grid System (and many other international systems) which syncs it with all the British hiking maps. Only complaint is that sometimes it turns itself off and loses track of the total distance covered (don't know if that's universal or just my unit's quirk).
Also have recently used it to hike in New Hampshire and Maine.
Way better than the dinosaur GPS we use on our sailboat. Did I mention that I LOVE it?!
