Comments about Gerber Big Rock Serrated Knife:
This is my girlfriend's first camping/survival knife. We're both amateurs, but this is a great knife and was useful for our first camping trip together.

Comments about Gerber Big Rock Serrated Knife:
I have many knives such as Orion, Kershaw, SOG, Ka-Bar, etc... This Gerber is as good as any of them. I leave this one in my go-bag in my truck due to its size and durability. The blade is thick so you can really beat on this thing and not worry about banging it up because it is super affordable. I would rather have two or three of these than an expensive Benchmade that I am worried about losing or ruining. Buy one or two before they are no longer available.

Comments about Gerber Big Rock Serrated Knife:
This is sharp out of the box. The case is easy to use. The downside is that the case is loose on one's belt.

Comments about Gerber Big Rock Serrated Knife:
great knife, blade gets nicked if it touches anything harder than itself. My sheath was wayyy different. I bought it from my local rei store and the sheath has a flat hypotenuse versus this funny curve. I wouldnt change MY sheath, but this one is weird.

Comments about Gerber Big Rock Serrated Knife:
I own "fierce tools" which are knives upon which you can rely. Especially in a survival situation.
Gerber makes good knives. But this one is a design "cutie" meant to impress the impressionable.
I purchased this, more for curiosity than anything else. Knowledge is power, and the more knowledge one has, the better off one will or should be. I gave it away in short order.
The handle is too thin and not durable. It won't last long with hard useage. The stainless steel blade will never hold a proper edge, and dulls quickly.
The tensile / memory strength of the steel is poor, and the knife will bend or the tip will break when used for heavy prying.
The length is too short to be considered a serious outdoor knife.
NOW WHAT IS IT YOU REALLY NEED?
A minimum of seven inches - blade length. Preferrably nine inches. WITH AN EDGE WHICH IS 25 TO 30 DEGREES OF ANGLE.
If you can shave with it, it means it's 12 degrees of angle, and good for nothing but shaving.
A zone tempered steel blade which will hold a proper edge during hard useage. And the blade must be of proper thickness. Usually they are.
A tang (handle shaft) which allows you to baton wood, or drive the knife into a tree if lost, for the purpose of viewing the surrounding terrain terrain.
A weight sufficient enough to allow for chopping of limbs and the splitting of "them".
The ability to trench or dig holes - for a fire pit as an example.
The sheath is of little importance, with the exception that you may secure the knife to your hip or pack.
None of these does this knife do. A famous bladesmith, a good knife does not make. Remember he was commissioned to create an artifice intended to cut steaks and chicken and fish.
The old addage is: When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Not this one folks!! Forget it!!
Going on forty years now in the wilderness, I know a thing or two, and I know this doesn't work at all.
Go on line and look at KBAR knives and their Becker products as well. You'll see real knives, and at not much more than this one is going for.
I only wish REI would come to their senses and begin to offer better product knives upon which one can trust their lives to.
The products they offer are cute and nothing more than that.
Good luck with your choice!!

Comments about Gerber Big Rock Serrated Knife:
I recently purchased this knife, and it has exceeded my expectations. The knife feels solid and I was able to slice straight through thick nylon with one easy motion due to the unbelievable serrated edges. I recommend this knife for anyone looking for a tough knife that is not too heavy or too expensive.

Comments about Gerber Big Rock Serrated Knife:
If you're looknig for a great, all-round knife you can use and abuse, yet not cry if it breaks or you lose it, this is the one! Its a tough little blade to be stainless, so you really have to try to break it. The tip will go first, but it isn't hard to regrind one although this will discolor the blade and may affect the temper if you let it get too hot. Great size for general use--not too big to be impractical, but large enough to skin an elk, clean fish or cut rope. Using a baton, you can fell a small tree with this tough little knife. The handle is extremely comfortable and doesn't loosen up (at least on mine), and the exposed parts of its full tang construction are nicely rounded. This is a knife you can comfortably cut with all day with no blistering, and really holds up to Gerber's good name. It's sharp out of the box and takes and holds an edge well, but I personally prefer the edging capability of high-carbon steel over stainless. I suggest re-edging it to take a 20 degree bevel--this makes it more practical for general use and is easier to resharpen under field conditions. I also don't prefer the dual edge blades with the serrations unless its on the back of the blade...would rather have an all smooth design. The sheath is cheap nylon with a hard plastic insert--it isn't hard to find a replacement that fits, but I modified the sheath by just double wrapping about 25 feet of paracord around it, which stiffened it considerably while adding another useful element. If they made this model in high-carbon steel with a single edge and a leather sheath, I'd consider it the perfect field knife. Comments about Gerber Big Rock Serrated Knife:
For the money, this is onf of the best knives you can buy. I'm back on the web site to order a second one because I left mine on the top of my jeep after packing up at the campsite... god only knows where it landed on the way home. This knife has a full tang, and the hilt has a very comfy grip. I actualy like the flexability of the nylon sheath. At first, I wasn't sure about the serated edge because the blade is made of stainless surgical steel, it's a bit soft and the teeth have a tendancy to dull and chip and are hard to put an edge back on but then aften using it to saw through various things, for the price, who the hell cares. That's the best part, I've had $200+ knives fall apart... again I let this one fall off the top of my jeep...

Comments about Gerber Big Rock Serrated Knife:
Bought this knife as my first fixed blade. My friend has owned one for a while and pointed me towards it, he said his has kept its edge fairly well.
Comfy and well balanced grip, lanyard attachment point.
Hard to dull this knife, used it to split wood, aaaand it performed. Only thing about the blade is i would have liked to see the straight edge a bit sharper.
As per some reviews dogging on the sheath, I don't see any heart breaking flaws, inexpensive design on ballistic nylon but not cheaply manufactured.
One of the better knives in the price range, wouldn't hurt to have a backup on the trail considering its price and weight.
