Comments about Petzl Tikka XP LED Headlamp:
This headlamp is generally excellent. It is is totally fine for most uses and has been my mainstay for a long time. However, it is not quite good enough for trail running. There are two problems.
1) To do adequate foot placing on deeply rutted trails, you need a broader beam which means using the diffuser. With the diffuser, the amount of light is insufficient to illuminate far enough ahead of you to be able to run comfortably. For walking or on uphills it is totally fine but with the faster pace on flats or downhills, it is not quite enough. This effect is especially bad in the rain or fog.
2) Having the batteries with the light source on the front of your head makes it thicker and causes it to bounce on your head in some situations. Tightening the strap to eliminate causes it to be too tight for comfort.
There is one other minor down side to this headlamp. On long backpacking trips, I generally have loads of AA batteries for various things but I need to take extra AAA batteries only for this. That being said, I don't think that I've ever had to use the spare set of batteries.
This headlamp is great for most uses but for night trail running. You might want to consider something else. I'm going to probably buy a MYO XP to replace it.

Comments about Petzl Tikka XP LED Headlamp:
I primarily use this product in my capacity as a rescuer. I previously used a Princeton Tec Yukon HL until I broke it and when I purchased the Tikka XP as a replacement I was truly surprised just how bright it is. The light is incredibly bright and lasts a good long while on only 3AAA.
As I have it helmet mounted I don't notice the weight but with the battery pack and light body in one it is far more compact than many other options. I'm very glad I no longer have to allow extra clearance front and rear when putting my head places. I've used it in many storms and I'm yet to have the seals fail me.
The adjustable beam is very simple being either wide or narrow and it's quick and easy to switch between the two even with gloves on.
Things I don't like:
There is no regulation on this model so if you're using alkaline or normal rechargeable batteries they will fade within two hours. The light is still usable but not nearly as bright as when they're fresh. To overcome this I use NimH batteries which are better at giving a constant voltage in the first place.
The only other thing I don't really like is that the buttons are very small and recessed just enough that finding them whilst wearing gloves can be very difficult. With bare hands it's easy though.
All in all I think this is one of the best headlamps I've ever seen. Sure there are brighter ones out there but they all require more/heavier batteries. This one is so beautiful in its simplicity you just cannot go wrong.

Comments about Petzl Tikka XP LED Headlamp:
Buy it. Its relatively close to perfect, and stop spending your time deciding if you want this or something else, because any other advantages will be nil, or it will be worse. Because! The beam is powerful, as much as a normal, non-airplane-signaling-lost-person needs. It has a boost, which is incredibly bright. eg, i could see a tree down the trail which i paced off to be over 100 yards away. thats a ways. you dont need more. Its not heavy. When the little guy is strapped to you head, you only notice the sweat, not the weight. If you cant tolerate that much weight on your neck then outdoor things probably isnt a concern you should have. it adjusts, as it must, up and down. clicks into place so its not smooth. Its stable as one needs, ive played ultimate Frisbee with it on, and it doest move. it has 3 brightness settings, wich is nice, and a pulse setting which..pulses. the bright is more than you probably need, so you will press the button 3 times to get it to the dim setting and save battery, because you can see just fine 30ft in front of you with it. lastly, there is a little plastic "eyelid" that you just slide in front of the light or into the black casing. When in front of the light, it spreads the beam (when your doing stuff in your tent, walking around your house during a power outage) and when not in front, it is more of a focused beam like an old flashlight. You have probably read about it in backpacker or outside or whatever, so stop reading, buy it because it does in fact classify as perfect gear, and move on to the next thing.

Comments about Petzl Tikka XP LED Headlamp:
This is a 1W light; and that's the new standard. But I think the Black Diamond Spot or Princeton Tec EOS are better choices. The beam on this XP has terrible artifacts (fringing) on the perimeter. The buttons are tiny and useless when wearing gloves. The 'low' setting is maybe 3 times as bright as it needs to be for reading a map at night, or reading in a sleeping bag, thus compromising night vision. The 'high' setting can only be used for 20 seconds or so before it automatically reverts to a lower setting, unlike other truly 1W lights, etc, etc.. I won't go on because space is limited.

Comments about Petzl Tikka XP LED Headlamp:
Surprisingly bright! In fact, I wouldn't mind an even dimmer setting for reading or playing cards in camp. But when you think you hear a bear in the dark, the high setting and boost are very welcome - like daylight. The diffuser lens is useful and not flimsy as it appears. My only complaint: the control buttons are TINY and not differentiable in gloves - you just have to learn which is the boost and which the dimmer. I got this to replace a heavy, bulky, halogen Petzl, and I'm very pleased with this headlamp and recommend it to others.

Comments about Petzl Tikka XP LED Headlamp:
I have two Petzl Tikka headlamps and I love them. It's compact, lightweight and durable. Also has a good battery life and bright for its size. The only complain I have is that the buttons are too small, it is hard to push the buttons when wearing gloves during winter activities. So those of you who are buying this for winter activities, think again. Other than that I give 9/10.

Comments about Petzl Tikka XP LED Headlamp:
It's big and anything but the lowest beam will wear out the battery in a few days, but it's the best lamp I've had for night hiking.
The four-LED Tikka is just fine for hikers that don't venture too far out into the dark, but the XP really lights up the trail on those moonless night.
My only complaint is that this lamp has to be stowed carefully or it easily turns on in your pack. I put a piece of paper between the battery contacts while hiking, but all that opening of the battery compartment introduces dirt and moisture. A fairly significant design flaw.
Also, what's up with the camouflage band? I lost my first one in the bushes outside a shelter. Someone's happy.

Comments about Petzl Tikka XP LED Headlamp:
I have used my Tikka XP for 3 years now and it has worked flawlessly. I use mine at home every night, and on all my hiking trips.
This compact light weight, bright, sturdy, well-made, reliable headlamp will fit about any backpacking situation you will ever encounter. While not water proof, I have used it in heavy rain, and wet weather with no problems. i have actuated the power switch thousands of times and it still works like the day I bought it. Again this is an outstanding product.
All in all an excellent product.

Comments about Petzl Tikka XP LED Headlamp:
I never take this headlamp off. Ever. Okay, that's exaggerating a bit, but though I bought this for camping, I also use it for reading, walking at night, model building, repairs in tight spots, fishing, cycling, finding stuff under the sofa, and basically everywhere else I need more light. The beam has a much more uniform brightness and a slightly warmer hue than my previous LED light. It's bright enough that I rarely have to hit the boost button, and the low setting is great for reading. The light diffuser is awesome, and tends to stay on unless I absolutely need a spotlight. The battery life, though not spectacular, is good enough for me. The little battery indicator light is a useful touch, although I'll admit I'm a sucker for LED indicator lights. It's comfortable enough that I've forgotten I was wearing it.
The only nitpick I have is the way the beam flashes to indicate a low battery. It can be rather distracting when the light starts blinking in the middle of some important task. Oh, and the fact that I'm now "Headlamp Guy" to my family.
