Comments about Base Colour Convertible Pants - Men's - Special Buy:
These pants are fine if you're not into full-range motion sports like climbing or mountaineering (or even climbing over logs on the trail). I bought two pair because of their 'great value' and both came apart in the crotch - I tried sewing them back but they kept ripping out. [...] There's a reason these pants have been 'on sale' without a break for the last year and a half. [...] Do yourself a favor and get some heavier duty stretchy, full-range-of-motion pants. They cost more, but they look, feel and work better and last more than a couple of months.

Materiale is course compared to NorthFace or Marmot zip pants. Zippers are unlined and came off the fabric w/in 3-4 washings. OK backups for the price.

You get what you pay for with these. I bought two pair; one is holding up just fine while the button came off on the others the first time I put them on. These are definately not for running or other very athletic activities - they just won't hold up. If you are just looking to do a little light hiking or sit around the campfire then these are for you, otherwise go with the quality stuff.

I agree with most of the negative reviews. I rarely write up products, but these pants are so bad that I feel morally obligated. My biggest gripe...no inner liner to keep the leg-zippers from scraping holes in your thigh...do not wear for more than 2-3 mi hikes, and never while climbing, because these have drawn blood!
Next biggest gripe: I returned these over 3 years ago, and the design remains the same. I guess some manufacturers will never listen...

I took these on a 2 week kayaking trip in Alaska and the front button broke off the first day. There's a built in belt, so not a problem, right? Wrong. The belt does not hold after cinching, 3 steps and it's completely loose again. It still wouldn't have been a real issue if the pants didn't have ONLY TWO BELT LOOPS, right on either side of the front button. At first I shrugged it off and thought, for [$], what did I expect? But actually, they are originally priced at $55, which really should be better quality. Even for [$], with today's manufacturing technology, the button should stay on. These are $10, buy-new-at-the-flea-market quality pants. Luckily, REI rocks and it's not a real issue, but just to caution anyone who's thinking they're getting a deal.

I recommend these pants, with some reservation. My biggest initial gripe was that the leg zippers aren't covered on the inside, and both pair that I bought had sharp plastic parts on the zipper that felt like needles jabbing into my legs. Fortunately, I'm moderately handy with a sewing machine and was able to fix the problem by adding a zipper cover to the inside of the legs.
The pants seem pretty sturdy to me, but fit a little tighter than I feel their stated size should be. They're fine for walking around, but not so great when you have to climb mountains or be highly maneuverable.
They are nice travel pants though. There are several zipper pockets, including a tricky-sorta-hidden one in the left pocket underneath an unzippered pocket. I always carry my wallet in my front left pocket because I think it's safer there, and the zipper makes it ultra safe against pick-pockets.
They're also stylish enough for me to wear to work (though the tightish fit means I don't often do so).
With a more relaxed fit, these pants would rock.

I love these pants. I have a big butt from playing tons of racquetball and squats and normally can not fine pants that fit. The size large size is perfect for someone with a 34 to 38 inch waist. I have four pairs of the pants and I love them. But some of them have the metal button which is superior to the plastic one. I wish they all came with that button.
