Comments about REI Peak UL Carbon Shocklight Trekking Poles - Pair:
In an effort to shed some equipment weight I purchased these. Indeed, the light swing weight was friendly to the wrists and forearms. Their shear strength was superb and held up fine.My dissatisfaction stemmed from the duo-lock mechanism's attachment to the carbon pole. The mechanism works well, however, the epoxy that binds the little plastic inserts into the carbon failed. [...] At first they'd screw tight and the little bushings stayed intact. But, after a trip or two, they twisted loose. And, I ensured my torque was minimal -- fingers tight, not a gorilla grip twist.I finally returned to the Leki Super Makalus, and they are bomb proof. Comments about REI Peak UL Carbon Shocklight Trekking Poles - Pair:
This is one of those items in which you get the best of one world (weight) but sacrifice on another (strength).First with the Pros: 1) by far the lightest hiking poles I've used, 2) retractable and easily stored in/out of your pack, 3) great grip, and 4) very strong locking mechanism.Cons: 1) way too expensive, and 2) weak/stiff. Bought a pair and one of the poles broke the first time I used them. The great staff [...] was kind enough to replace it. Also, the shock absorption comes on/off when hiking, presumably due to the rotation of the pole when on the ground which locks/unlocks the shock-absorbing mechanism. Not a major problem, but something to consider.I would buy them again (on sale) but would be very, very careful not to break them by putting too much weight on them when on an angle as it doesn't bend/give, it breaks.

Comments about REI Peak UL Carbon Shocklight Trekking Poles - Pair:
Some users have complained that the locks do not hold. If this happens, extend the pole into the red zone and twist the lock until it tightens. Don't over tighten it as you then want to then slide the section closed (shortened). Once you've slid it closed, you can then lock the pole in any position. This should solve most of the problems reported. If you bought these in the store I'd STRONGLY recommend making sure the leghth locks and lockout work correctly before buying them. I've tried quite a few on the stores that just don't work correctly (mainly the lockout feature).
While a lower or extended grip would be a nice feature, I think Komperdell was really looking to minimize the weight. So this may not really be a "con".

Comments about REI Peak UL Carbon Shocklight Trekking Poles - Pair:
I have not had the same problems the other reviewers have had. Mine lock up fine. I bought these for the hike up Half Dome. They adjusted fine and locked without incident. The one problem I did have was that the straps caused some blisters/abrasion on my hands. I think it was because they weren't adjusted correctly when I started and by the time I got them just right, they had already rubbed the skin off a small area on the back of my thumbs.
The poles were great otherwise. My legs were toast on the way back down and I put a lot of weight on them (200+lbs.) and they held up fine.
The reason I chose these was because of the weight. You will not believe how light they are until you have them in your hands. I tried the ones without the shocklite in them and preferred these. I am glad I chose these, because I think the shocks helped a lot.
I gave these 4 stars only because they are ridiculously expensive. I hope that I don't have the same problems that the other reviewers have had.

Comments about REI Peak UL Carbon Shocklight Trekking Poles - Pair:
I've had very positive experiences with these so far, with ~150 miles hiked. They adjust easily and lock securely. At times poles will change from spring to solid w/o my intention. I haven't had the trouble others have had. A two piece (rather than three) would be quicker to adjust, but I prefer this as it packs down smaller.

Comments about REI Peak UL Carbon Shocklight Trekking Poles - Pair:
On every hike, these hiking sticks have unfortuantely let me down. I need to take them back and exchange them. I've had them on at least 12 heavy-duty hikes, and always the same problem---they collapse too easily, not holding their length. A couple of times, it was actually dangerous, as I almost lost my footing when the pole shortened up on me! I bought them because of the superb weight, and except for the problem with shortening once every few miles, they have been good sticks. They are strong and comfortable---I just with the lock worked better on them to keep them the same length!

Comments about REI Peak UL Carbon Shocklight Trekking Poles - Pair:
I just finished a 30 miler with these poles and like the lack of weight. However, the poles are very difficult to adjust(to get them to catch when you change length) and constantly move back and forth from spring loaded to solid. I had to adjust them at least every five minutes. Nice pole, but I wish they had perfected the technology first.

These poles allow my ever-aging knees to get me places I couldn't go without them. The support both uphill and downhill are essential to stability.

Comments about REI Peak UL Carbon Shocklight Trekking Poles - Pair:
These poles have a fatal defect: the locking mechanism thwarted many minutes of effort by myself and three backpacking companions every time we tried to adjust the length. Eventually somehow we got them locked each time, and they stayed locked, but it was extremely time-wasting and frustrating trying to lock them. Tried other pairs in [...] and all had same problem.
