Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Compact Trekking Poles - Pair:
We just completed a trip to RMNP and surrounding area. We did several steep hikes while there. The trekking poles made such a difference. We didn't take them on one short (but steep) hike and really noticed the impact on our knees. They definitely went with us on the remaining hikes!

Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Compact Trekking Poles - Pair:
The locking mechanism on the REI Ascent SL Shocklights failed on both poles after only one walk of approx. 3 miles. I had adjusted the poles fewer than a dozen times in the course of purchasing, transporting and using the poles. This is a serious defect. I plan to return the poles. Also disappointing as the poles noticeably improved my walk experience.

Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Compact Trekking Poles - Pair:
After using these poles on my third hike, they wouldn't lock in the place that I wanted them to. They kept slipping. They guy at [...] told me I would have to take them apart with a wrench and sand the pads down, then they would lock again! No thanks!

Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Compact Trekking Poles - Pair:
I have been looking at trekking poles for a long time. There are so many to chose from. I borrowed a pair first to feel the possible issues I might experience and happily selected this pair of poles. The price was great and the performance has been excellent. The shock absorbers during downhill are worth their weight in gold and being able to lock them out up hill makes for a nice feature. Learning how to lock the extensions is pretty intuitive though it took a few more minutes to get the shock absorbing lockout feature without looking at the instructions. I recommend these poles for weight, performance and features not to mention saving my knees for many more years of hiking.

Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Compact Trekking Poles - Pair:
I owned these only one month, and used them on only three hikes. They were great during the first hike, but one of them would not stay collapsed after the hike. During the second hike, I could not lock one of the poles at the height I needed it. It kept collapsing. Then, on my last hike to Half Dome, I had to resort to using only one pole because the other one would not lock at all. I sure could have used both poles on my way down. If REI could fix the problem with the locking mechanism, I could recommend these poles.

Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Compact Trekking Poles - Pair:
I've used these poles bakcpacking, snowshoeing, and on day hikes with pleasure. Very comfortable grips and shocks, lightweight, easily adjustable, stable on all kinds of terrain - rock, boardwalks, sand, wet or dry. Amazing traction on rock! Offer extra stability on uneven surfaces and easy on the knees with a heavy load.
Received these as a gift 2 years ago, but they're so good I can't keep them to myself, and split the pair with my fiance. I plan to buy a second pair.
As a bonus, they collapse for storage or to strap to your pack out of the way. Just backpacked the rough trails of the Adirondack High Peaks and wouldn't consider doing it without these poles.
(Keep and use the rubber caps so the pole tips won't shred your stuff in the car or the closet.)

Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Compact Trekking Poles - Pair:
I bought an earlier model of these poles in 2005 to use on a multi-day backpacking trip. They performed amazingly (I have bad knees and these were my first poles), including saving me from a sprained ankle on a rough patch. Definitely a good investment.
I used them later on some winter hiking trips in the White Mountains in New England and found they tend to collapse. They didn't do this before, so I'm a little irked. I'm nervous about them working correctly on my upcoming three-week backpacking trip; I think I will take them back and ask if there's any repairs that need doing.
Probably a good investment. REI claims the locking system is better than the flip-locks, but I must admit I am skeptical, since these seem to "unscrew" very easily.

Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Compact Trekking Poles - Pair:
These poles have been awesome, and I use them constantly hiking in the Cascades. They are easy to use and lightweight, and the shock absorbers are wonderful. The locking mechanisms are not quite perfect, however, and tend to give out after a year of use. [...]

Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Compact Trekking Poles - Pair:
I have used these poles for hiking the Grand Canyon, the Tetons and elsewhere and am amazed at how much stress they take off of my knees by shifting some of the effort to my upper body. They also offer two additional points of balance on precarious trails.
