Comments about Black Diamond Spire Elliptical Trekking Poles - Pair:
Good solid poles. The click linkage that connects the bottom section seems simple and sturdy, and the elliptical design seem to add rigidity. I like the angled handle, however the foam is not my favorite since it rubs off onto your hands leaving them black and dirty, and can damage easier than rubber or cork. Other than that they are fine poles, and being from black diamond I am sure they will hold up well. Only with they could be fitted with cork grips.

Comments about Black Diamond Spire Elliptical Trekking Poles - Pair:
Have used these poles in a dozen hikes in the northwest. They are strong and will take an amazing amount of bending. But they need to be longer by 3 or more inches when going down hill for taller hikers.

Comments about Black Diamond Spire Elliptical Trekking Poles - Pair:
Having used Leki's for 10+ years, I was always disappointed with the twist lock system. Even the new super makalu's I bought 2 years ago had problems with the twist lock coming loose when poling thru deep snow. When in the tetons, i noticed that all the guides used black diamonds o a bought these and tested them on some dayhikes and then a 7 day backapcking trip. the grip material is very comfortable, much better then cork. also, when used properly, there can be a fair amount of pressure on the hand straps and the BD straps are comfortable and do a good job disbursing the pressure over the entire strap surface area. The poles themselves are very ridge and i used them to essentially vault over a stream crossing. Most people don't realize that the lower pole section of trekking poles is designed to be extended to the maximum whenever possible. the BD poles solve this by having one postion and a very secure locking system for the lower section. The upper pressure cam system has been flawless and if there was ever any adjustment needed in the field, it is very simple. I eneded up buying another pair for my wife who was also frustrated with the twist lock system on her leki's.

Comments about Black Diamond Spire Elliptical Trekking Poles - Pair:
Wow. Finally someone - Black Diamond - made an intelligent engineering upgrade to the frustrating twist lock of all other hiking poles.
There are several advantages to BD's design: 1. the lower section snaps into the fully extended length without any hassle, 2. the Flicklock of the upper section doesn't slip or wiggle loose, 3. the length can be changed with one hand.
My gripe is with the wrist strap. First, the loop/padding is non-symmetrical, but both poles are the same (unless I just happen to have two left poles). It seems that if they were non-symmetrical, there would be a right and a left design. Also, the end of the webbing hangs below the hand placement, so it tends to end up under your grip. That makes it uncomfortable and a pain when trying to grab the handle (trying to avoid grabbing the extra webbing).

Comments about Black Diamond Spire Elliptical Trekking Poles - Pair:
These are great poles.
Easy to adjust and a comfortable grip, they're durable enough to hold you through a lot of tough stuff.
Each pole has two adjustments, one is a one-length lock extention, the other one is the Flick-lock system, which reminds me of the seat clamp on most mountain bikes. It really stays firmly clamped and in place- I did have to tighten it once about a month after purchase, but that was really easy, even with camp tools.
The only slightly 'con' of these poles is that the bottom lock isn't a very tight fit. The part slides out and locks into place by two spring-loaded pins on either side, that you can depress to condense the pole. The pins fit into two small, plastic holes in the lock, and the fit is very loose. This doesn't effect performance at all, but can lead to the sticks being noisy, making a 'clank' noise every time they hit the ground and the pins move around in their homes. A lot of trekking poles make sounds like this, and if it doesn't bother you, I'd say you're looking at one of the best sets of poles out there.

Comments about Black Diamond Spire Elliptical Trekking Poles - Pair:
This is my fourth set of poles and the first set that I've been fully satisfied with. Most poles are advertised as being lightweight. These are advertised as being strong and I've found them to be the strongest that I've tried. I have bad knees and use the poles as crutches when going down steep downhills on rocky desert trails. Most poles flex--these don't.I tend to break shafts and Black Diamond is the only brand that I'll buy because they sell replacement shafts at reasonable rates.. Neither REI or Leki sell replacement shafts. Leki's lifetime guarantee is worthless unless you buy two sets of poles. When you break a shaft, you have to send the broken pole back. With shipping in both directions, you lose use of your poles for about two weeks. With REI poles, you're out of luck if you break a shaft unless the store happens to have used shafts in the back room due to returns. Once they had a shaft, on two other visits they didn't.With Black Diamond, you can go to their web site [@] and buy an extra lower shaft for [$] and an extra mid shaft for [$]. [...]

Comments about Black Diamond Spire Elliptical Trekking Poles - Pair:
These poles are great ! They are lightweight, sturdy, and fuss free. When extended, the bottom portion of the pole clicks into place, always set to the same length. The height of the pole at any given time is determined at the flicklock (middle) portion, which is super easy to adjust on the go. When fully collapsed, these poles are nicely compact. After the simplicity & sturdiness of the locking mechanisms on these poles, I will never return to the twist type locks again. The handles on these poles are angled for a comfortable grip. The only thing I dislike about these poles are that the baskets are very tiny, I would prefer a slightly larger & more versatile basket.

Comments about Black Diamond Spire Elliptical Trekking Poles - Pair:
Used my new Diamond Spire trekking poles for the first time on a multi-day Sierra backpack. I will always hike with them from here on out. Great for stabilizing backpack sway on the trail, especially on steps and gravel areas. I loved the extra help they provided on snowfields. The flicklock and pushbutton adjusting locks are superior to those poles that have rotating lock collars. I also liked the extra strength afforded by the elliptical shape.

Comments about Black Diamond Spire Elliptical Trekking Poles - Pair:
I bought these on sale for the wife since she kept taking my other Black Diamond poles. These poles have saved my butt, knees, and back more than once. The elliptical shape seems to make then feel more stable for my 210 lbs. The wider strap is much more comfortable for large hands also. The poles stay in the Jeep with me all the time and if I hike more than a mile, they go too. A buddy borrowed them on a hike once and then bought his own. Best hiking goody I ever invested in!

Comments about Black Diamond Spire Elliptical Trekking Poles - Pair:
I'd definitely recommend the Black Diamond because of the locking system that they use. And these poles are even more attractive due to their elliptical form which makes them more durable and more stable.
