Comments about REI Duffel Bag - Medium:
I've gotten tired of packing my overflow from carryon into a checked wheelie.
The wheelie is hard to fit into the rear of an Asian taxi (with a CNG tank back there), and almost impossible to lug along on side-trips.
Plus, a wheelie is 10 pounds just by itself, while this is under 13 ounces. If I've gotta haul pounds around, please let it be clothes and gear and not the bag itself.
Sure there are other duffels that cost more than twice as much as this little gem from REI, weigh three times as much, and are too bulky to fold down and pack in another bag. At least those other duffels "look tough." For what that'll get you. This is an "old school" duffel that is "just a bag" and proud of it.
So I'll take this simple bag, classically designed and lightweight, over an over-built competitor any day. It has a bullet-proof YKK zipper, which is all that really matters, and even the handle straps go all the way around the bag for extra strength.
(The included, removable shoulder strap could be better though - the hardware on mine looks fine, definitely rock-solid attachment points on the bag itself, but other reviewers had problems with the plastic hardware. Since when using a shoulder strap, I prefer to carry cross-body, "bike messenger style," and not on my shoulder, I would add a bike messenger strap accessory pad for comfort, or just switch out the freebie strap for one of my others. Just be forewarned that the included strap is not up to the quality of the bag itself. But it IS thankfully lightweight.)
There's only one shortcoming in the bag itself - the handles don't have a wrapper to keep them together.
(The one weak spot with dual handled duffel bags is when a baggage thrower overstress the stitching at the connecting point by yanking and carrying using only one handle, not both. Imagine putting a couple of gallons of milk in a paper grocery bag with handles, then trying to haul it up with only one handle. When both handles on this duffel are used at the same time, there is no "pull away" effect, when one handle is used, the seam where it is sewn on is strained.)
This problem is easily solved by tying the handles together, or by purchasing an accessory handle wrap you like. I found an inexpensive one at REI that included a nifty leash to it won't get lost, and an I.D. holder on the inside so if the bag gets lost, there is an I.D. for it.
REI packs their duffel in a re-usable zip pouch that makes a nice toiletries kit. It has dual zippered slots on the back of the pouch to handle stick-deodorant and an electric razor, and similar sized (but unzippered) slots on the interior, plus a decent open area for all the stuff that just knocks around in a toiletries kit anyway. If I were packing this duffel to carry in another bag, I'd just use a much-lighter Ziploc or similar bag to hold the duffel after folding it down - I'm saving the Cordura zip pouch for other uses where the weight is worth it.
And oh yeah, I wish REI also made this bag one size smaller, about 2,000 cubic inches instead of 2,900 approximate cubic inches for this bag. But hey, no one's perfect.

Comments about REI Duffel Bag - Medium:
When you need multiple pieces of luggage for your ecolodge trip into the Costa Rican Rain Forest, you can't beat the utility and low cost of REI duffels! All our luggage was large and weighs 8 - 12 lbs. empty. The weight limit to fly into the remote areas of Costa Rica is 25 lbs. each. Everything is checked, so no carry-ons! We used our REI day paks and 2 of these duffels for our family of 4 (2 college age sons).

Comments about REI Duffel Bag - Medium:
On my first use I only had clothes in it for a weekend road trip, with room to spare. I could have probably fit more than twice the amount if I wanted to, so my review doesn't include rating the strength of seams and zippers. However, one of the adjustable strap buckles broke the instant I picked up the bag by the shoulder strap. I was absolutely amazed until I remembered this was the second REI product I've purchased that has been just fine, except for the fragile plastic hardware. Also, the strap itself is cumbersome anyway. You can slip it out of all of the hardware just trying to adjust it. There are two adjustment points and the ends aren't sewn to any part of the strap body. I'll have to modify the thing to keep me from getting frustrated enough to set it on fire.I love REI products, but come on! Get it together on the hardware. Try a different supplier for the plastic.[...]

Comments about REI Duffel Bag - Medium:
This bag is great! It packs up to be really tiny, so I throw it in my suitcase for longer trips and then fill it up with souvenirs, etc. while I'm gone. Simple, stylish, durable and versatile. Perfect size, big enough to hold lots of stuff, but not so big that it's akward to carry.

Comments about REI Duffel Bag - Medium:
I got this duffle for a rafting trip down the Grand Canyon. It is the perfect size and durable and it works as carry-on luggage. I fit two weeks worth of clothes in here and had room for my one person backpacking tent. It also packs down neatly and comes with it's own carry bag. Very durable construction and great value for the price.

Comments about REI Duffel Bag - Medium:
This bag is strong. It can be packed full of your travel necessities. It holds up to the elements very well. I have found that the best use is for weekend - week long trips. Its got more than enough space. Make sure to get the appropriate size. It is a duffle bag, which should be kept in mind. It isnt a suitcase. But it is affordable and very well-built and durable.
