Comments about REI Monarch IV Hiking Boots - Men's:
went looking today for a boot to fit a narrow range of specs. Needed an non gtx (hot climate)very stable boot for hiking on sharp rock & rubble. I needed protection from bruising and the ability to scramble over loose gravel and roots. Had to be able to fit some orthotics in there as well. Also required a largish toe box. Tried on about 18-20 pairs of shoes ranging up to [$] I find it amazing that the least expensive was the one that worked. definitely reccommend.

Comments about REI Monarch IV Hiking Boots - Men's:
Have used these on a 68 mile route over three 12,000 passes in Kings Canyon national park. Very comfortable and more than strong enough. Great in summer when all Gore Tex boots are too hot.

Comments about REI Monarch IV Hiking Boots - Men's:
Needed new warm weather hikers. Got these for their stiffness and breathability - not necessarily an easy combination to find. And they're inexpensive. I've put about a hundred miles on them and am not disappointed.

Comments about REI Monarch IV Hiking Boots - Men's:
I am a geologist and spend a lot of time hiking in rough terrain. These are quite possibly the worst boots I have ever owned. After only one use walking on a fire road (yeah, a road) I got a blister on the back of my heel. The toe bed is very wide and your foot just flops around. The laces can't be tightened because the canvas construction does not allow the shoe to cinch down. Finally, there's something going on with the upper lace eyelets/upper portion of the tongue. In a matter of seconds the upper portion of the shoe digs into your leg, so it's impossible to wear one pair of socks w/o horrible pain. I am really diasppointed with these, especially since I have had great success with REI boots in the past. Partially my fault because I ordered them assuming they would be as good as the other REI boots I have owned. Shame on me. Since I have exceeded the return policy I'll just donate them to a shelter.

Comments about REI Monarch IV Hiking Boots - Men's:
These boots are a great bargain for the quality and engineering they possess. I got them to wear for everyday use for work and I'm impressed with how breathable, light, durable they are. In addition, the traction they offer on offer on gravel, loose dirt or snow is also great. They are taller than other hiking boots, for example they are about .5" taller than the Asolo GTX 95's that I have. As mentioned they breathe well and are very comfortable when the temps are in from the 40's to through the mid eighties. Overall they are a great bargain.

Comments about REI Monarch IV Hiking Boots - Men's:
This is the third model of Monarch shoe I have used. I have always liked these boot, they fit well and have been comfortable on the trail.
This until the Monarch IV.
I wore these around for a few like days to get them broken in, which they did not seem to even need. Then I went for a real hike, and they shredded my heels. Where the insole meets the back (and sides) of the boot there is a raised edge that is just brutal when I was on any kind of incline.
This little ridge is about half an inch up along the back, so it is in a prime spot to tear into your feet.
I do not understand why anybody would design an insole like this.

Comments about REI Monarch IV Hiking Boots - Men's:
I hike 30+ miles a week and these shoes feel great out of the box and break in fast. I hike in loose rock, rocky terrain and they show little wear and great grip. I have had these for over a month.

Comments about REI Monarch IV Hiking Boots - Men's:
I hike often locally and section hike the AT yearly. After the break-in the shoes are very comfortable and the traction and ankle support are excellent. The price is better than anything I have seen for a boot of this quality. The break-in is pretty rough but short lived. I wore them around the house and around town for three days and they was ready for the trail.

The fit was great, right out of the box.Never gave me any trouble. Cause of a slightly flat arch, I bought a pair of orange Superfeet, and it made a while world of difference. Great for the price.

I really like this boot--however my nobby toe ("bunion")does not. Bummer: One of the lower (metal) eyelets rubs the toe too much.
