Comments about REI Monarch IV GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
These boots are very comfortable. They fit true to size and width. I once wore them on an 18 mile, single day hike on a rocky section of the AT along the VA/WV border and didn't have a single problem. My feet stayed comfortable in them during several overnight trips in Shenandoah National Park in 90+ temps this summer. I would estimate that I put 150 miles on them this summer.
What I don't understand is that while the waterproofing is excellent, the wet traction of the soles is abysmal. I was on the AT in a HEAVY downpour on the 4th of July and the boots repelled the rain and mud but my feet slipped almost every time I placed them on a rock or tree trunk. I was the only person slipping on the trail, and one other person was wearing a pair of trail running shoes without slipping.
Dry traction is what you'd expect from Vibram soles - close to approach-shoe level. But when there is even the slightest coating of water I might as well be walking on ice.
I have slipped and fell every time I have worn these boots when it is wet. I've slipped on dew and condensation, in rain, during stream crossings, in the splash area of waterfalls, you name it.
These boots are like a double-edged sword because they keep my feet bone dry when it is wet but they are so slick I cannot wear them when it's wet.

Comments about REI Monarch IV GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
I bought these to replace my beloved pair of Merrel Blast boots that well, (bad pun here) detonated on a hike in NH (see attached pic!). The sole darn near came off both boots. I wanted another pair of Merrels, but the Chameleons were too wimpy looking, the Ventilators were not much better, and the Phasers were just not versatile looking. So I went with REI's Merrel-made Monarchs.
They were a bit harder to break in than I imagined. I've owned these boots for over a year now, and I wore them sparingly, not having gone hiking in a long time. Then I went on an 18-mile stretch of the AT around Mt Rogers, VA. These boots handled the mud well, and stayed dry despite the fact that we were up to our ankles in mud resulting from heavy snowfall/melt from the previous week.
I got some blisters, but probably more out of carelessness than out of any real defect with the boots. I'm quite happy with them.

I just got back from Uzbekistan where I wore these for 2 weeks. There was snow and ice the entire time I was there. Not only do they keep your feet dry and warm(without any insulation-the average high was about 5 F), they have SUPERIOR traction in these conditions.

Comments about REI Monarch IV GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
As a Scoutmaster, I am in my boots once a week and in the field a couple of days a month. I need my boots for hiking, standing, in very hot Texas Weather, and very wet weather around swamps or during the monsoon.
These boots have stood the test of time for 4 years. I have an early version of the boot. They fit perfectly on day 1, and have worn very well. The only downside is that they are not adequately waterproof on top of the boot. I would recommend this boot to anyone that wants a reasonably priced, workhorse of a boot. Just stay out of puddles!

Comments about REI Monarch IV GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
Ok the only reason why I didn't give these boots a lower score is my feet are hard to fit. I settled with these boots because they fit well and I wanted to get out of the store. After trying on several different pair I thought these would do the trick. I tried to break in on a little residential trail. After the boss and I hiked probably 800 meters; OUCH! I knew something was wrong. Immediate blisters on both heels; the size of quarters! After cutting corner and ending up on the sidewalk I ended up walking a half mile with my socks. When we finally reached the car I noticed that these boots had a serious flaw. The internal heel stitching (zig-zag) from top to bottom is very pronounced. This boot may work for some, but I would run your finger across the inside heel lining. If you think this would be an issue for your find another boot. I'm now looking at the Asolo FSN 95 GTX or the Asolo Fugitive GTX.[...]

Comments about REI Monarch IV GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
Both my daughter and I have owned REI Monarchs over the last few years, and on both pairs the glue joint between the uppers and the Vibram sole failed. The boots are otherwise reasonably-priced and comfortable. However, it is clear that REI does not yet have the glue technology in hand. I'd avoid these boots.
Service and delivery comments:
REI grudgingly gave credit for the original purchase price of my daughter's boots (on which the upper-to-Vibram glue joint had opened along the entire side of one boot), but only after implying that we had abused the boots.

Comments about REI Monarch IV GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
I purchased these boots last week after owning my previous REI pair for over three years. After 3 days of walking around, going to class, and even working in them for about 6 hours a day I decided to take them on a hike. Went on an 8 mile hike, through mud and ankle deep puddles, up and down steep hills and the boots were amazing! They passed the water leak, traction, and resistance tests very well. Also, the ankle and Achile's tendon support they provided were a big help. Break in was not much of an issue for me, as you can tell.

Comments about REI Monarch IV GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
These boots are great, they are comfortable and I don't get blisters. I wear medium thick wicking socks. Even though I marked "true to size", I found that my tennis shoes are size 9, but I wear an 8.5 with this boot and my toes don't touch the end when laced up snug.

Comments about REI Monarch IV GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
I now have about 300 miles on these boots and finally wore a hole in the Gortex inner liner so they are not waterproof. I will be getting the exact same pair. I tried every boot that REI sells and this is the only one that fit my foot like a glove. I have wide feet. The toe box is huge. I NEVER get toes stuffed into the front when going down hills. I barely have to tighten the laces because they fit so well. I have NEVER gotten a blister even after 25 miles in one day.

Comments about REI Monarch IV GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
I bought these shoes for my 8 day - Mt. Kilimanjaro trek in Tanzania. I never bought REI hiking shoes before but I figure I give it a try.
Theses shoes were able to handle the different terrain that Mt. Kilmanjaro has (forest - sand - gravel and lava rocks). Endured the different elements from mud to rain to ice and hail.
With these shoes - I was able to hike and summit Mt. Kilimanjaro (altitude 19500 ft.).
The shoes were a great fit and were very comfortable. Didn't have any blisters or discomfort even after more than 6 hours of hiking each day.
I would buy definitely buy these shoes again.
