Comments about REI Jet UL Pack:
I returned another day pack and exchanged it for this one as I was looking for a good day pack I could use for both hiking and for packing in on a multi-day hike for use from camp for a day hike. I have used this pack for about 12 hikes so far over the past several months. This bag has exceeded my expectations. Although I feel the size is overstated it does have enough capacity for a day hike to include packing extra layers. I love the hip belt pocket and the side pockets which seem to be perfectly sized for one liter nalgene bottles.
The frame sheet is a little difficult to remove and the pack is very uncomfortable without it. I don't think the 2.5 oz. in weight savings is worth the discomfort so I leave it in even when packing in my larger pack. I hardly even notice I am wearing it most of the time.
What I like the most is this packs simplicity. It is a top loading pack with a good size main compartment. Most other day packs have their main volume divided into several compartments reducing what you can actually put into it.
The sternum strap CAN be adjusted to three different settings. This was very important to me as most sternum straps seem to choke my neck because they are set so high on the shoulder straps and I have large shoulders for my frame.
If you are looking for a good all around, versitle, lightweight pack with several uses, this is it.

Comments about REI Jet UL Pack:
I've got lots of packs, and this is my favorite. I really wanted to correct something that was mentioned by two other reviewers. The sternum stap CAN be lowered. The small clip that attaches to the horizontal webbing on the stap has an opening in it that is hidden behind the webbing. Remove the clip from the webbing and move it to one of the two lower pieces of webbing. (This bothered me too, until my wife figured it out.) GREAT PACK!

Comments about REI Jet UL Pack:
This is the first hiking backpack I've purchased and I love it! The two side mesh pockets are perfect for keys, tissue, sanitizer and extra water bottles. The side hip pocket holds my camera perfectly. The ADJUSTABLE chest strap is non-constricting. The overall size is great, even though I'm small. It's ultra lightweight. It holds my first aid kit, hiking book, extra snacks (in the top lid pocket), a hat and jacket.
The only downside is that it does not have a separate hydration bag compartment and my hydration bladder (CamelBak) doesn't hook onto the weird toggles on the inside of the bag. So I just throw it in the bottom of the bag and it still works well, with plenty of room for my other stuff. I love that you can put the hydration line over either shoulder.
I had originally ordered one of the smaller Stoke packs, but realized that was WAY too small, even for my small frame.
This pack is perfect for my day hikes with my dog (5-15 miles) in the great Northwest.

Comments about REI Jet UL Pack:
I borrowed my daughter's REI backpack and traveled to New Zealand with it. I loved it. She bought me my own for my birthday. It is the best carry-on, because it is comfortable, holds a lot and usable on day trips. I have been buying them for other relatives as well.

Comments about REI Jet UL Pack:
What I was looking for: I needed an all-around pack for some hiking (a day pack), and biking to school. The problem with this pack is that it's just not big enough. I never saw it in person before buying and the cubic inches listed sounded big enough to me. My other pack which saw at least eight years of faithful service finally bit the dust due to book corners slowly wearing away at the canvas. I'd give the Jet UL a year with that kind of use. It is just not made for that kind of duty.
What I got: This pack was very comfortable, and for my size a good fit. The name says it all: it's ultra light. For this reason I wouldn't recommend this for an everyday multi-purpose use. It was great on the trail and even on my bike commute, provided I only needed a few things. If you need to carry something like a laptop, forget about it.
The bottom line: the pack is quality in my estimation, but just not what I was looking for. If you need an all around pack I suggest looking elsewhere. The only thing I didn't like about the pack is that unless you had it full, putting things in the top pocket was extremely annoying. And since it was the only pocket besides the main compartment (and the waste-belt pocket) I tended to have stuff in it. This makes opening it and getting in the main compartment a real hassle since it has no frame to it. The other qualm I have is that the waste belt doesn't do a lot without a frame of some sort. The foam sheet is mostly worthless. It's not like it's a bad pack, it just didn't suit my needs.
Oh, and in this case my "gear style" is: by necessity I had a lot of things to bring (laptop, books, extra clothes and lunch/water) to camp out at school for the day.

Comments about REI Jet UL Pack:
I'm a fairly active senior citizen and new to hiking. I used my Jet UL pack for the first time today, and I loved it. Fully packed with my lunch, water bottle, rain jacket, long sleeved shirt and miscellaneous small items, I barely knew that I was carrying a pack at all. Another great feature is the webbed backing on the shoulder straps and the back of the pack that enables air to pass through, so it keeps you cool.
My one complaint is that I cannot reach the side pockets to get a water bottle without removing the pack. I think I have solved the problem, however, by purchasing a hydration pack that fits neatly inside the pack. Can't wait to try it out on my next hike.

Comments about REI Jet UL Pack:
After shopping for similar packs of it's size and simplicity, I made my move for the REI - JET UL. The size and capacity were perfect for my needs (a smaller pack to carry enough gear for 3-4 days). I use a larger (10 year old) REI pack for longer adventures.
After 3 trips (about 75 miles) using the JET UL, this is what I think -
PROS: 1)The price was great! Much cheaper than comparable packs of its size and intended use. 2)The size and capacity are perfect for the gear that I carry... sleeping bag, pad, stove/pot/food, hammock and straps, small items, etc. 3)The pack was very adjustable for its size (although after 2 demanding sections of the Benton-MacKaye Trail, the straps became very uncomfortable).
CONS: 1)Although the pack is very adjustable, the straps can become uncomfortable after some miles on demanding terrain, regardless of how much adjustment is made. 2)Durability. I have never questioned the build an REI product, I think that they produce some of the finest gear available. I have used a larger REI pack for over 10 years and hundreds of miles of hiking. But, my JET UL had some problems right from the start. The strap that holds the top closed broke immediately, as well as the compression holds on the face of the pack. I have also noticed that the seams for the waist belt are already starting to fray (and it ain't 'cuz I'm fat). I question the further durability of the pack as I plan to finish the Benton-MacKaye using it.
I would recommend this pack for short-runs and 2-3 day hikes, trails that are not demanding.

Comments about REI Jet UL Pack:
I could fit my sierra design light year one man tent, fly, and ground sheet, cookware, stove, fuel, fleece pants, and still have enough room for 3-4 days food. plus misc., iodine, ID, lighter, etc. I use water from the rivers so i carry only enough to get from stream to stream, i.e. 2-3 liters. my sleep pad and fleece blanket go on the outside. obviously this is only for summertime.

Comments about REI Jet UL Pack:
I needed a light day pack to hike around Colorado's 14ers. I took this pack to the summit of Mt. Sherman (14,036') the day after purchasing it. It was perfect. It is extremely light weight and has room for all of my essentials even with the 70L hydration bladder. I have large shoulders and torso and this pack adjusted wonderfully. I hardly noticed the pack throughout the ascent.

Comments about REI Jet UL Pack:
I used this pack on a snowshoeing adventure and I couldn't feel it. I had 3 liters of water, a polar fleece, a light jacket, and a jacket shell in there for most of the trip, and it felt like nothing was on my back. The chest strap is a little high and not adjustable. It doesn't have enough pockets, and the hip pocket is a little awkward to get to, but it is a great pack. I would highly recommend this pack to any of my friends. It really is awesome.
