Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men’s 32” Inseam:
I own over half dozen hiking pants, two of which are these, and these are my favorite for three season wear. I’ve worn these for week-long backpacking, day hikes, base camping, and a mission trip to rural India.
Pros:
- They are light weight.
- They dry quickly.
- They are very comfortable.
- They do not pile.
- So far, all the dirt and stains have come out in the wash, including field washing with “Campsuds.” I have gotten these seriously dirty.
- The zippered cargo pocket is great! I can feel confident with putting my wallet and car keys in that pocket, and not worry about them falling out along the trail somewhere.
- Having ankle zippers are great! My first pair of convertible pants lacked these, which means taking off my boots with those to put the pants legs off and on; I’ll never buy convertible pants without ankle zippers again.
Cons:
- On the one pair, the snap broke, which I replaced with a button, as I didn’t want to discard my favorite pants (fortunately, the belt kept my pants up on that trip).
- There is no right/left leg indicator, so occasionally I end up trying to reattach the wrong leg bottom.
- My wife tells me none of my convertible pants are very stylish for around town wear, but I bought these for function not style. For hiking and third world mission trips, the style is just fine.
Mixture of Pros/Cons:
- The zippers are light weight, and therefore less durable, but so far I have had no zipper problems.
- It has a built in belt, which feels comfortable when wearing a pack (no rubbing). However, it means when I pack a second pair of these, I’m also packing the extra weight of that additional built in belt, and once you drop pack (or at base camp) you cannot attach your pocket knife sheath to the belt. With only one belt loop, you can’t choose to wear your own belt with these pants.
If these would have been my first hiking pants, I would not have bought the others pairs that preceded these. Those previous pants make me appreciate these all the more.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men’s 32” Inseam:
I do field work in tropical Australia and I've had at least 3 pairs of these over the last several years. The climate here puts everything through the ringer, and these pants have stood their ground better than most. They're light enough for hot, muggy nights chasing frogs around the rainforest, and durable enough to last through a lot of trips through the bush.
I've had some problems from time to time with the zippers, but nothing fatal. Also, would be nice to have some indication on the legs about which is which for easier reattachment.
My most recent pair just gave out after about 2 years (the leg of the shorts split), but that was after hard use on 3 different continents. No worries recommending these as I just ordered another pair.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men’s 32” Inseam:
Went to the local REI to buy 2 pair, left with nothing. I could not unzip the legs on either of the 2 pair I tried. I tried with the pants on and off, there was no way of unzipping one leg on each pair. Of course these were made in China. REI, make a decent pair of pants in a country with quality control. People don't mind paying for quality.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men’s 32” Inseam:
I have had several pairs of these pants, but my last, a 2007 Christmas gift, will be the last pair. I have had a zipper fail in 16 months and when I went to put on my new pair Christmas night the button above the zipper was detached (broken), so I could not even try them on for fit! This used to be a good product back in the late 90's, but I will look for a higher quality product for my next purchase.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men’s 32” Inseam:
I bought two pairs of these and wear them all the time...hiking (summer or fall; winter w/ base layer), traveling, around town. They block wind well but also keep cool enough in summer.
Love these pants, just wish the shorts were longer! Not exactly stylish when you zip off.

Taking mine back. Front zipper keeps opening. Apparently, these have a variety of zipper problems. Otherwise, nice pants. Hope they fixed them.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men’s 32” Inseam:
I have worn this for my daily wear and it is my staple pack pants. Some drawbacks are that the shorts section is to short. This is not flattering for guys. Maybe in the 70's but not today. Other than that I love these pants. They have held up to some moderate hiking wear and are great on a hot day. They breath very well. It might also be beneficial to make the ankle section slightly wide so it can fit over the boots.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men’s 32” Inseam:
Any one thing that can do two jobs or more is perfect for outdoor endeavors.
Summary: I love these Pants/ shorts! They stop medium winds & wick most rain while drying faster then a frat house keg. Zippers work great with a little focus.
I don't consider myself an ultralight backpacker but I do cut a ton of corners to bring the extra heavy sleeping pad and good food. I do things like bring only 1 change of scent-controlled polyester-ish or smart wool clothing. I love getting convertible pants and jackets to save pack space for the comfort necessities. (REI's Spruce Run Convertible Jacket is "GuruJ's Enlightened Product of 2007" and looks great with these convertible pants).
I use these pants mostly as shorts in the summer and at night I pull them off, give a quick rinse in a nearby stream, let dry for 10 minutes, and they are ready to go again.
In all seasons but hot summer I use these over a pair of "SmartWool Midweight Boot Top" long underware (like a manpri= capri pants for men). I find it the best for wicking and warmth. When the wind or cold gets to much I add the pant legs and I'm perfect. Still extremely breathable yet blocking strong winds. The other benefit to this set up is that if you get wet you will still be toasty warm and can dry quickly in all but freezing temps.
I washed these with my other DWR gear in the NIKwax stuff and surprisingly the waterproofing took to the pants in a big way. Not waterproof but like I RainX'd the windshield or waxed the car. Most rain beaded up or just ran off. Still didn't bother the breathing.
I also have a pair of these for use in my wellness clinic and daily life. (Yes they look that good!) Like a khaki pant but cooler. I dress it up with a light sweater and collared shirt or a trendy Prana long sleeve. These are currently on sale and I have bought 2 more pair! (one for pretty & one for ugly)
I see others who have zipper problems. I have yet to have one issue in 4-5 pairs of these and many zip-on /offs in cruddy conditions. I do believe that you should take an extra 2 seconds to focus and pull the zip slowly. Don't just rip it across the cloth and expect happy thingys to happen. Be gentleon on all your gear. Especially your zippers!
Actually I did have one zipper problem. After 2 seasons of abuse, one of the pant leg zips lost its pull thingy. I added an after market pull to the original zip piece and those pants went another 2 seasons.)
I won't put any cons because these pants/ shorts are perfect for what they are. Light, multi use, quick drying, durable, good looking.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men’s 32” Inseam:
I have 3 pairs of these pants and have been wearing them for a couple of years. I've got two different model years. They are great pants, very comfortable and dry quick. I wear them around town and on serious hikes. My only issue with these pants are the zippers. On the first pair the crotch zipper tap broke off. On the second pair, the leg zipper broke. And finally, on the third pair, the zipper on the cargo pocket is somehow jammed closed. REI needs to upgrade to better zippers. I love these pants and this is so frustrating! Sending them back again...to get replacements.
