Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men’s 32” Inseam:
I own over half dozen hiking pants, two of which are these, and these are my favorite for three season wear. I’ve worn these for week-long backpacking, day hikes, base camping, and a mission trip to rural India.
Pros:
- They are light weight.
- They dry quickly.
- They are very comfortable.
- They do not pile.
- So far, all the dirt and stains have come out in the wash, including field washing with “Campsuds.” I have gotten these seriously dirty.
- The zippered cargo pocket is great! I can feel confident with putting my wallet and car keys in that pocket, and not worry about them falling out along the trail somewhere.
- Having ankle zippers are great! My first pair of convertible pants lacked these, which means taking off my boots with those to put the pants legs off and on; I’ll never buy convertible pants without ankle zippers again.
Cons:
- On the one pair, the snap broke, which I replaced with a button, as I didn’t want to discard my favorite pants (fortunately, the belt kept my pants up on that trip).
- There is no right/left leg indicator, so occasionally I end up trying to reattach the wrong leg bottom.
- My wife tells me none of my convertible pants are very stylish for around town wear, but I bought these for function not style. For hiking and third world mission trips, the style is just fine.
Mixture of Pros/Cons:
- The zippers are light weight, and therefore less durable, but so far I have had no zipper problems.
- It has a built in belt, which feels comfortable when wearing a pack (no rubbing). However, it means when I pack a second pair of these, I’m also packing the extra weight of that additional built in belt, and once you drop pack (or at base camp) you cannot attach your pocket knife sheath to the belt. With only one belt loop, you can’t choose to wear your own belt with these pants.
If these would have been my first hiking pants, I would not have bought the others pairs that preceded these. Those previous pants make me appreciate these all the more.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men’s 32” Inseam:
Went to the local REI to buy 2 pair, left with nothing. I could not unzip the legs on either of the 2 pair I tried. I tried with the pants on and off, there was no way of unzipping one leg on each pair. Of course these were made in China. REI, make a decent pair of pants in a country with quality control. People don't mind paying for quality.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men’s 32” Inseam:
I do field work in tropical Australia and I've had at least 3 pairs of these over the last several years. The climate here puts everything through the ringer, and these pants have stood their ground better than most. They're light enough for hot, muggy nights chasing frogs around the rainforest, and durable enough to last through a lot of trips through the bush.
I've had some problems from time to time with the zippers, but nothing fatal. Also, would be nice to have some indication on the legs about which is which for easier reattachment.
My most recent pair just gave out after about 2 years (the leg of the shorts split), but that was after hard use on 3 different continents. No worries recommending these as I just ordered another pair.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men’s 32” Inseam:
I have had several pairs of these pants, but my last, a 2007 Christmas gift, will be the last pair. I have had a zipper fail in 16 months and when I went to put on my new pair Christmas night the button above the zipper was detached (broken), so I could not even try them on for fit! This used to be a good product back in the late 90's, but I will look for a higher quality product for my next purchase.

Taking mine back. Front zipper keeps opening. Apparently, these have a variety of zipper problems. Otherwise, nice pants. Hope they fixed them.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men’s 32” Inseam:
I have worn this for my daily wear and it is my staple pack pants. Some drawbacks are that the shorts section is to short. This is not flattering for guys. Maybe in the 70's but not today. Other than that I love these pants. They have held up to some moderate hiking wear and are great on a hot day. They breath very well. It might also be beneficial to make the ankle section slightly wide so it can fit over the boots.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men’s 32” Inseam:
I have 3 pairs of these pants and have been wearing them for a couple of years. I've got two different model years. They are great pants, very comfortable and dry quick. I wear them around town and on serious hikes. My only issue with these pants are the zippers. On the first pair the crotch zipper tap broke off. On the second pair, the leg zipper broke. And finally, on the third pair, the zipper on the cargo pocket is somehow jammed closed. REI needs to upgrade to better zippers. I love these pants and this is so frustrating! Sending them back again...to get replacements.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men’s 32” Inseam:
Good, durable pant from REI. These are my favorite pants to hike in, with my North Face cargos being a close second. These pants have all you could ask for when it comes to hiking/climbing attire. The only thing that I can find to complain about is that there is only 1 beltloop. Although there is a built-in belt, I would still like the option of wearing an exterior one to hold a field knife.
