Comments about REI Mojave Convertible Pants - Men's 32'' Inseam:
Admittedly I put these pants through hell. But they wore out well before they should have and it seems other comments back this up. Its sad that REI seems to have great idea's that are too often not backed up with quality in the materials they use.

Comments about REI Mojave Convertible Pants - Men's 32'' Inseam:
I'm a woman, but prefer to wear men's pants for backpacking because women's hiking pants tend to be too wimpy and non-practical, focusing more on style than substance. I really like these pants for their comfort, breathability and practicality. The waistband lies flat and does not interfere with my backpack harness. The pants are roomy and give me free movement. Alone, they are not particularly warm, but when paired with wool long-underwear will keep you warm down to about 40-degrees F. I would not recommend them for winter backpacking.
The leg zips are easy to get on and off, and the shin-zips mean that you can remove the bottom part of the pants without removing your hiking boots.
A few minor problems with these pants: The front and back pockets are set high and become virtually inaccessible while I'm wearing my pack. The leg pockets are great, but the button closures are difficult to open/close one-handed (velcro would be better). It would also be better if the leg pockets were bigger, or box-bottomed, to hold a bit more stuff.
The biggest CON for these pants is the non-durability of the fabric, especially across the butt. I have owned 3 pair so far and have worn through the butt of each pair after only about 3-4 backpacking trips. Admittedly, I do a lot of hiking in the Sierra Nevada mountains, where there's lots of rough granite to chew through your clothes, but it would be good if there was thicker fabric, or reinforcing across the back-side of these pants.
Other than the holes across the butt, these pants have held up very well. If you're not as rough on pants as I am, I'd recommend these for overall comfort and practicality.

Comments about REI Mojave Convertible Pants - Men's 32'' Inseam:
I bought these pants to go hiking in and thought they were really comfortable. Unfortunately, they ended up with worn places in the fabric after just two hikes! I came down the mountain with holes in my pants. I contacted REI and they sent me a new pair, but the new ones did the same thing. These may be comfortable, but the fabric quality is very poor.

Comments about REI Mojave Convertible Pants - Men's 32'' Inseam:
I agree with those who've pointed out how these pants don't stand up to wear. I bought two pairs of a previous rendition of the Mojave pant, used them for backpacking, cycling, gardening, knocking around, and they lasted for 10 years. I bought a pair of these, made of a different material, when the old ones wore out. The pair I bought in Jan. '08 has ripped down the backside in March '09. Pants are a good, comfortable blend of cotton and polyester but, like I said, they don't hold up. If you're thinking of buying these for extended backpacking, look elsewhere, or you'll be flapping in the breeze.

Comments about REI Mojave Convertible Pants - Men's 32'' Inseam:
Very comfortable pants. I'm about 6'2" and 275 lbs. and this pants feels like I'm wearing air. Doesn't bind and has very roomy legs. It breathes incredibly well, yet is a very good wind breaker. So I wore it to work through out the winter and was very comfortable. The pockets function well with good lay outs. Great for casual hikes and stylish enough to wear around town. The matrerial is thin though so it won't stand up to sliding down rock faces and such. Hope this helps. FYI, I wore this pants to work every day through the winter, and wore it to the store and on erands. I just wish it came in more colors so I could buy more.

Comments about REI Mojave Convertible Pants - Men's 32'' Inseam:
I bought these pants for light trail hiking in Northern Virginia. I liked how light they were, the feel of the fabric, the color, etc. My first complaint about them, when wearing them on the first hike, was that the pockets were not functional. Both the cargo pockets and the back pockets were too small for the cut of the pants. Once you pull them on, there's barely room for a wallet in the back. I was willing to put up with the pocket issue, but yesterday I pulled them out of the wash and the crotch has started to wear and the fabric is pilling. I've worn them about 6 times on hikes and they've been washed maybe 4 times at most. They should definitely hold up better than that, and will be returned tomorrow.

Comments about REI Mojave Convertible Pants - Men's 32'' Inseam:
These pants are great and very versatile. I ordered the "Dk. Kahki" and they look more like a military "olive drab". I am no longer in the military and do not want to look like I am wearing a uniform. If you were to make these in a REAL DARK BROWN, I would probably buy more. At [$]bucks per pair, I would rather have DARKER colors that hide stains from being outdoors and camping.

Comments about REI Mojave Convertible Pants - Men's 32'' Inseam:
Roomy and rugged but waist is sized too small. I'm a size 34" waist and the fit is too tight. A size 36" would make the pants too baggy. I had to move the waist fastener over too make the waist fit right. However, the pants are roomy. Some suggestions:
- front and rear pockets should be deeper.
- leg pockets should be a bit larger and roomier to accept maps, flashlights, etc.
- buttons on the leg and rear pockets are small and the button holes are horizontal, making them hard to button close with one hand. Larger buttons and vertical holes would be great.
- replace the metal crouch zipper with buttons. The metal zippers collects dirt and grime in it that makes it hard to operate.

Comments about REI Mojave Convertible Pants - Men's 32'' Inseam:
These were the first hiking convertables I've ever owned, and I've hiked in these things for a long time and they have withstood quite the beating from the evergreen forests of the Pacific Northwest to the canyons and deserts of Arizona. They last.
