Comments about REI Neo Jacket - Men's:

This jacket is great! I have never owned a "Soft-Shell" before so this is my first; but I did an astounding amount of research before deciding between the Neo,NF Apex,Marmot Leadville, or MH G-50. It is not as 'Athletically' cut (or tight) as the others mentioned. The Neo seems to offer more bang for the buck... it is extremely well made. Zippers are well constructed, pocket layout is nice, fabric is nice and unlike any other and it is supremely windproof (to an actual 40+ mph). In fact, I haven't been cold in it yet. It is also nice that it is available in a single color with no color accents. I agree that it is best suited for 35-60 degrees (I am always cold if the temp is under 75 and this jacket is a wonder for how warm and lightweight it is). I can't comment on durability yet though. It is surprisingly light and has an appealing texture with soft lined pockets. I wear a Large even though I am 38Regular 5'9", 145 lbs (with 35" arms) so the long arms are a luxury and are warm when not wearing gloves. I like that the sleaves don't have closures. I wish the overall length were a tad longer say 2" or so to cover shirts and sweatshirts when they aren't tucked in but this is minor point. When it is real cold I have fit a Large Denali vest under it with a long-sleave REI OXT shirt and have been comfortable. Overall an absolutely great buy.

Comments about REI Neo Jacket - Men's:

This is one of those jackets you take everywhere and wear all the time. My girlfriend keeps reminding me that she needs one too.

Perfect from 35 to 65 degrees. Sheds water like a duck. Sleeves cover my longish arms well, my wrists are not exposed when my hands are in the pockets. Stretches with movement very well. I've worn a down vest under it comfortably despite its athletic cut. Easy to sleep in. Makes a rather smooth pillow too.

Pockets are limited. Zippered outside hand-warmer pockets are great, but they do not double as cargo pockets inside, so no place for beanie, gloves or water bottle. The Napoleon pocket is fine for about one item. It includes a headphone port, but I would prefer a pocket on the sleeve for a music player.

Comments about REI Neo Jacket - Men's:

being an avid Mountain Hardware fan, this is a divergent path for me to take. Having that said, I was in the market for a new softshell this year. It was between the Hardware G50 and this one. The Neo had a shorter collar which I appreciate. The pockets are way easier to get into since the Hardware has welded zips that are difficult to open with one hand at times. Both jackets have nice simple lines nut the REI jacket is more subtle with logo placement, which I have come to appreciate. I was concerned about the level of "waterproffness" Neo offered but kayaking in it with the occassional splashes was no issue. Have yet to hit a rainy day with it though. I also like that this jacket can go from the trail to a casual night out without looking like I just walks out of a sporting goods co-op. It lacks wrist cuff padding to keep heat in, but fir my needs ( wear for weekend trips and to work during winter) I think it's a better fit andthe right choice. Also is[$] less then the G50. Sorry foe typos. On cellphone kayak camping this weekend with this jacket and wanted to right a review.

Comments about REI Neo Jacket - Men's:

I live in Asheville, North Carolina and go hiking and camping in the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests. This jacket is perfect for weather in the Southeast. Winters here are never too cold, but in and around Asheville the weather is often very windy. This is not a very insulated jacket, but it's water-resistant, and completely windproof.

The fit is different than most jackets I've owned. It has a slightly longer backseam, and much longer sleeves than most jackets. I usually have to buy "Tall" jackets and long sleeve shirts but the Neo fits perfectly. Great product, does what it sets out to do.

Comments about REI Neo Jacket - Men's:

I got this as a staff Christmas gift when I worked for REI. It's a perfect jacket for those overcast autumn mornings where you need a little warmth and rain clouds look threatening. It's a perfect jacket for the Seattle or SF Bay Area.

The fit is spot on in all aspects. The quality is great and I know from working at REI that these are made in the same factory as other more expensive brands.

Downsides? For just wearing around town I'd say there are none. For strenuous activities it's not the first jacket I'd reach for. Of course more breathable jackets won't be as warm when you're not moving. The water resistance is pretty good. I've been caught out in a couple of downpours and the jacket kept me dry long enough to make it to cover.

This stretchy, comfortable jacket isn't overly hot when its just barely coolish outside and if it unexpectedly drops into the twenties, I'm still comfortable--Great for unpredictable conditions. The extra-long sleeves are nice when I don't carry gloves. Handles moderate wind and rain, anything short of a downpour. After a year's heavy use, still like new.

Took this jacket up to Medicine Bow, WY for a backpacking trip in September. Was the perfect jacket for this type of trip, it shedded rain and heavy winds perfectly, also gave great warmth with temps into the mid 30's. Any colder, add a shell and you'll be golden.

After the first time the temperature takes a dip you can't get me out of this jacket. I only give it up when I absolutely have to (i.e. when there's feet of snow on the ground). It sheds water very nicely and I enjoy the fleecy lining. The extra zippered pocket, beside the two side pockets, come in handy as does the inside pocket. When mine finally passes away (I've had it almost two years and counting) I look forward to getting a new one.

Comments about REI Neo Jacket - Men's:

If you are going to be in 40F or up weather, than this jacket will suit almost all your hiking needs. I got rained on, was in heavy wind, got hit by a wave, scrambled up rocks, and even used this jacket as a pillow.

I used to have a One and it suited me well in Mojave Desert in November 2005, but I lost it and replaced it with a Neo for a Death Valley Canyon trip in Dec 2006 where the temp dropped to 31F. Both areas had no wind. I felt a little cold and definitely would have rather had a One for those temperatures.

I like the pockets, but I felt that the sleeves were about 0.5"-1.0" too long. However it's not really a problem.

In conclusion: A Neo is moreso a better baseline jacket for most folks. It's hardly a poor man's One. In fact, I'd say that a One is a Neo for those who are in colder temperatures.

Comments about REI Neo Jacket - Men's:

I went into REI looking for a softshell. Not only was the Neo the absolute picture of what I was looking for, it was on sale. Done.

I think a softshell is a niche garment. You don't want to size it like a rainshell; you want it to fit close, in my opinion over nothing more than a long-sleeve wicking top in a light or medium weight. (The idea is to avoid the layer/delayer tango of conventional shell systems, and wear this all day.) Given a choice between the skin-fit of a Medium and the loose of a Large, I chose Medium instantly. I was astonished that the sleeves were perfect length (but I notice many think they're too long, something you will never hear from me). This jacket works as advertised. It may be perfect for winter weather in Washington, D.C. In a cold light December rain, my Neo handled a fifteen-block walk, no umbrella, with aplomb. It isn't a rainshell, but it repels very well. On a cusp-of-the-new-year mountain trek in Shenandoah, I hardly wore it; over an expedition polypro top it was too warm! (Temps were mid-30s to mid-40s with the sun out; clouds or spit rain would have brought it out.) I like the is-that-inside-out? reverse styling of the Neo. It's ineffably cool. Pockets are warm and hold what needs holding. Zipped all the way up, the chin guard does its job maybe better than any other such I've worn.

When it's not expected to rain, you can leave the rainshell at home and take this. Whatever moisture you do get, the Neo will handle. Great buy.
