Comments about REI Ultra Light Jacket - Men's Extended Sizes:
This is an excellent value in a breathable waterproof rain jacket. It is well-made and fits as advertised, and the longer back is a real plus. I originally bought this exclusively for backpacking because of its light weight and how it stuffs down into a small, easily packable size that fits nicely in my backpack. But I found myself pulling it out on other occasions, and now it's my regular rain jacket.
The hood rolls away neatly into the collar and does a pretty good job of holding its shape when in use, but you'll still want to use a baseball cap so the hood can cinch snugly around the cap's brim. The pit zips do a good job of ventilation when needed (and unlike the earlier reviewer, I've not experienced a "sauna" problem in regular hiking with a pack).
My son kept filching mine whenever it rained, until he finally got his own.

Comments about REI Ultra Light Jacket - Men's Extended Sizes:
Had mine for 3 years. It is light weight so I carry it on all hiking/backpacking trips. It is water proof as you would expect. But I consider it a great wind breaker as well. When hiking you can open the pit zips to allow more air to flow. I wore mine on the top of Kilimanjaro over my fleece as a great layering system and avoided a heavy coat. Because it is light weight it will not take heavy abuse. If you are hard on gear look elsewhere. But of you want ultra light and a dual duty jacket and take care of your gear you'll love this jacket as I do.
Good points, hood stows away but can be easily opened while hiking, zippers all work, inside pocket, light weight.
Down side boring color, light weight means take care over rocks.

Comments about REI Ultra Light Jacket - Men's Extended Sizes:
I recently used this jacket on Kilimanjaro. It was wet in the rain forest (imagine that) so I put on this jacket. It worked liked a suana! It is true that one must work hard to climb through Kili's rain forest when it is wet but I have climbed through that area in similar conditions and my Mountain Hardwear jacket worked extremely well. I decided on this jacket because it weighed so much less than my old MH jacket but I suffered for it. I climbed Kili this year because my son wanted to get to near 20,000 feet; the only disappointment of the trip was these jackets. My son had one also and had the same experience. If you need to work hard during your hike then this rain jacket is not for you.

It confuses me how the sleeves can be too long and the jacket too short...

I've used the Ultralight Jacket in driving rain, sleet and high winds and it has never failed me. It has always kept me dry. I've used this product backpacking in all seasons. Great lightweight shell.
