Comments about REI Candle Lantern and LED Light:
I already have a headlamp. And I wouldn't dare light a candle in my tent for fear that I would do some serious damage. So. why do I bring it with me when every ounce counts? Well, I'm a guy and it's a cool toy.
I find it particularly useful late at night when I don't want to start a fire but still want to talk with my fellow outdoorsmen.
Not an essential, but it does add some ambiance. It's better than using my headlamp batteries. I would never recommend reading by its light but I guess you could if you had to.
P.S. - Be careful not to knock it down after it's been lit for a while. The candle wax coats the inside of the glass and is a pain to clean.

Comments about REI Candle Lantern and LED Light:
It doesn't get any better than this. Maybe it's just me, but there is something about the soft glow of a candle that is just soothing. An added bonus with this model is the snap off LED light on the bottom that runs off of 2 2032 batteries. The single LED provides enough light, but the candle portion takes the cake. It is easy to light, and it is spring-loaded so it will always be in the right position.
The only things to note with this is that the glass gets hot, and the wax needs to solidify before you put it in your pack. These two things do not count as cons to me because when you use a candle, having to wait for the wax to solidify is pretty standard, and when it has been on for a while (it lasts for 9 hours) the glass is bound to get hot to the touch.
i would highly recommend this, it is the cheapest rechargeable lantern around.

Comments about REI Candle Lantern and LED Light:
The LED candle lantern is easy to use and a convenient, stable way to bring cheap lasting light (9 hours with the candle) or quick, instant light (LED) along with you.
The only con is having to wait for the candle way to solidify before upending the lantern. Otherwise it's a handy utility to have with you.

Comments about REI Candle Lantern and LED Light:
I really like the dual use. The candle is nice and since it is spring loaded, it doesn't require adjustment. Like the other reviewers say, you need to let the glass and the wax cool before throwing back in your pack. The LED is nice and bright and can be used in the tent after the candle has cooled. It is not a critical piece of equipment but it is nice creature comfort.

Comments about REI Candle Lantern and LED Light:
Had the standard model for years then bought the conversion to put the LED light on. Doesn't get any better, good light from the candle, and the LED light is great for the 3am potty trip. Turn it on find your campshoes and take it with you. This is 1/2 inch longer than the standard but doesn't make it any more likely to get bumped, you're gonna do it any way.
