Comments about REI Hobitat 4 Tent:
This tent is awesome in so many ways that it's downright tragic that it's completely useless in any area with significant no-see-ums. We took this tent to Bear Island, NC, and it stood up against gusty, 30-40 mph winds despite its hight and square sides. It kept the rain out all night, and was simply the most comfortable tent we'd ever slept in.
But then the no-see-ums came...
As soon as the wind died down, and the vicious NC coast no-see-ums showed up, we had to abandon the tent and, since we couldn't get off the island, ended up sleeping in the bathhouse (on stilts, above the mosquito line). REI bizarrely claims that the Hobitat has no-see-um mesh, but it does not. You can tell by looking at it that the weave is WAY too big, and I watched several of the accursed little critters waltz right through it.
We used it in high wind at the beach, and in the Smokies, and it was just great. We like this tent so much that we thought about trying to replace the mesh ourselves. If REI ever puts real mesh in the thing, we'll buy it. But as it is now, we'll regretfully take it back, as it's basically useless to us.
(Incidentally: don't be fooled by the mini Hobitat models in the REI stores--THEY have actual no-see-um mesh in them. Unfortunately, the actual tents don't.)

Comments about REI Hobitat 4 Tent:
I bought this for my family of four. Plenty of room. The vertical walls allow you to really use all the space. The problems are that the mesh ceiling started tearing in multiple places. So I returned it for another because I liked the design. The second one started to rip after one short trip in the same areas. Other issues I had were that the fly is very minimal. It does let quite a bit of wind in during windy times. Because it is so tall this means a lot of cold air at night (especially in the mountains!). I will say that it did keep us quite dry during a good storm or two on the Oregon coast. I might have kept it if it didn't fall apart, but I only gave it two chances.

Comments about REI Hobitat 4 Tent:
This is not a four-season tent, maybe not a three-season tent, but for warm season camping, it's pretty nice. We have stood heavy mountain T-storms, high beach winds, and lots of rain with no problems. We've camped from the Outer Banks to The Boundary Waters in it and it's the best tent we've had for roominess and use of space. It's got a lot of headroom (i.e. airspace) and ventilation, so, for cold weather, it's not a good choice, but otherwise, no complaints. We like the modern design, too.

Comments about REI Hobitat 4 Tent:
This is the first tent I have ever owned. My 3 year old daughter is interested in camping, so I started looking what was available. I was going to get a cheaper tent, but my wife liked the looks of the Hobitat and we decided to spend a little more for something of good quality.
About a week after I got it, I decided to set it up in my back yard. I haven't set up a tent since I was in scouts (about 20 years ago) so I was worried that it would be difficult. Its amazing how far tent design has come. It was incredibly easy to set up. I think it took me about 20 minutes, including taking all the parts out and looking at them carefully for the first time. Once it was up, it was clear that it was a sturdy design.
When my daughter came outside to see it, she asked if we could sleep in it that night. There were thunderstorms forecast for throughout the night, so I figured it would be a good test and if it leaked, we could always just run inside. A storm came through before we were in it and it stayed completely dry on the inside. That night another storm came through and again we were kept dry on the inside. All in all, I was very happy with the first test.
My only complaint is about the zipper on the door. At certain points around the path, it seems to get snagged. A little adjustment fixes it, but I would say this is the only problem I have encountered.

Comments about REI Hobitat 4 Tent:
I am 6'1" and found this tent to be very exciting.
I could put my pants on standing straight up!! That was awesome. What was not awesome was the ~2 gallons of water that collected in the top center of the tent from the ongoing rain the night before. Inside, we remained mostly dry, with only a little condensation from below. However, I imagine that with a few more heavy rains, the considerable water weight on the all-too-small fly will end up causing a structural failure in the material somewhere. Being that I have another perfectly good tent (though it only stands 4'+" in the middle), I decided that I had to return the hobbitat.
A word to note about the name. No hobbit would ever want this tent. The only reason it was easy to set up, was because I am tall. If you are anything less than about 5'8", then you may have considerable trouble getting this thing together.

Comments about REI Hobitat 4 Tent:
This tent is perfect for car campingLet's start with the positives:+ Huge interior. Plenty of space for 3-4 people. Easy to change clothes since you can stand up in it.+ Lots of storage pockets to hold your glasses, socks, etc.+ Relatively easy to set up. It does take two people to set it up, but it can be done fairly quickly.+ The storage bag is essentially a duffel bag, so it's really easy to put the tent back in it for storage--after it has dried.Negatives:- Footprint is not included, and is rather expensive [$]- Poles are extraordinarily long, so you'll some space to put them together

This tent has lots of room and is fairly easy to set up with 2 people. It's big enough for a full size air mattress and is great for tall people! Lot's pf pockets to keep you organized. I never had any problems with leaking. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Comments about REI Hobitat 4 Tent:
Over all the tent is a good tent. The problem is with REI itself: [...]NO PARTS!They sell tents, but they do not sell parts! Why is that? To get a replacement pole, one has to go to a pole maker, and it appears it will cost about $75 for one pole. Heck, may as well buy another tent just for parts!I [...]The inside collar of a section just snapped in two, while I was putting up the tent. Also, after only about 10 uses, the poles are starting to bend where the most stress is at on the curves. So now, I have a [$] tent that I can no longer use, unless I pony up a size able amount of cash for another pole. Thanks REI!

Comments about REI Hobitat 4 Tent:
I motorcycle and car camp.
Following instructions I set it up in 15 minutes, the first time out of the box.
It does allow water to puddle in middle of top but it never leaked at all. I used this tent every night of 31 days straight. I was in many thunderstorms with high wind and never felt that it would collapse from wind. The water that is caught in the area between the poles in the middle of the top was easy to drain but was somewhat disconcerting. I never had a drop of rain leak in. The floor even sealed well. One time it rained so hard the ground turned to mud under the footprint, kinda a neat sensation under foot, but no leakage of any sort came through. For me, 6'4" set up was easy. The fly might be difficult for someone who is short. I love the storage pockets in the walls.

Comments about REI Hobitat 4 Tent:
Took it out first time car camping with the family. On the second night there was a huge thunderstorm. Water pooled in the center of the fly in a not so friendly way. So, I went out in the rain and adjusted the pitch a little and the water poured off. We were safe and dry the rest of the night. Chalk one up to experience. It's easy to pitch, but it does require some attention to detail to get it right. Get the vestibule, it's a nice place to sit in the rain.
