Comments about Eagle Creek Switchback Max ES - 25 Inch:

I travel all the time. Mostly business, but some leisure too. This guy is my trusty companion wherever I go. Not only does it look good, but its solid reinforced construction begs for abuse. Compared to the cheap looking wheels on most roller bags, these are the 4WD all-terrain equivalents. They are big, with ample clearance and roll smoothly. I can drag it through concrete sidewalks, roll it up steps or over grooved surfaces and it still rides with the suspension of an SUV. The shoulder straps on both bags are comfortable and both have a good lumbar strap. The side strap on the main bag is a simple but great idea. It makes picking it up from the conveyor belt a snap without snapping my back. The Switchback is a stylish workhorse. I could exalt it all day, but you'll probably find the cons more interesting. I have discussed all of the following with Eagle Creak customer service, who took my input very seriously. They are really helpful people to talk to.My biggest complaint is the lack of a sternum strap on the backpack. EC's explanation is that it's designed as a day bag for when you reach your destination and is thus not designed for heavy duty usage. I travel everywhere with this combo and will check in the main bag and carry the backpack. After countless hours and miles of it sitting on my shoulders in airports, the value of a sternum strap becomes apparent, since the straps have the annoying tendency to creep apart along my chest while I walk, until I have to pull them back in front of me. Since the Switchback was designed for heavy duty travel, I think the lack of a sternum strap is an oversight that assumed I'd be checking both bags in. (Note: The REI description says "Sternum strap on daypack and main pack".[...] I don't know if this is a newer version, but the pics on Eagle Creak's website don't show one. Check for yourself, but if it does have one I want it!)Along the same lines of me using the backpack more heavily than intended, the handle (which you would use to hold the bag from above with one arm) is a simple nylon loop. This gets uncomfortable after a while. I wish they had used a similar rubber design as the main pack.Space in the main pack is a little tight. The double handle bars that run through it seem to take up a lot of valuable space and it fills up quicker than you'd expect. The bag looks cool with the daypack attached to it, but if you overstuff the main bag even a little, which you will invariably do given its rather limited capacity, it becomes impossible to attach the day pack because the suitcase bulges into it. So unless the backpack contains something highly compressible like clothes, you have to carry it yourself. Finally, there are times when I'm standing by my suitcase for a while, and would like to rest the backpack on top of it. I could simply wrap the backpack's handle over the main pack's double handles, but the nylon loop is just a little too small! What a shame. I hope they make it a little bigger next time. I travel heavily so all the little things I mention are very important to me. Yet despite that, the Switchback is still the best travel bag I've had to date. It has a lifetime guarantee, so when a couple of the zip pulls broke on me, Eagle Creak instantly had replacements shipped for free. I love it because it takes abuse with a grin and asks me tauntingly if that's all I've got. If Eagle Creak implement my requests though, as they seriously indicated they might, I'll be trading in this baby for the new one.

Comments about Eagle Creek Switchback Max ES - 25 Inch:

I spent hours and hours online and at stores looking for the perfect bag that could do it all: rolling and backpack capable (for both rugged travel or just city & country hopping) and gave me the most amount of cubic inches for the least amount of weight. I really didn't care what it cost, I just wanted the best out there and I got a fantastic product for a great price. The removable daypack is genius and lets me squeeze by carry-on limits by carrying the daypack as my "personal item" (i.e. purse) and the main bag as my carry-on luggage. Even though the main bag is technically too big at 25" to pass as carry-on, when I batton it down with the compression straps, no one seems to notice and I never have to check it. There is not one thing I would change about this bag.

Comments about Eagle Creek Switchback Max ES - 25 Inch:

I've used the Switchback once on my one week trip to Hawaii. I usually pack light and had enough room for all my stuff using both the luggage and dayback. The removable daypack and luggage to backpack convertibility is what sold me on this item.

However, I usually carry along a lot of stuff with me on hikes and other outdoor activities. I though the daypack lacked sufficient space, even though it had several compartments.

Finally, I think the size of the luggage may only be suitable for shorter 4 or 5 day trips. I only packed T-shirts and shorts for the hot weather and didn't have enough space to hold all the souvenirs I bought.

Comments about Eagle Creek Switchback Max ES - 25 Inch:

I use this type of pack for international travel.
        Things I like:
It's attractive, very easy to roll around and seems quite sturdy.

        Things I didn't like:
I felt that it was VERY difficult to zip closed if filled even close to capacity, especially if there were odd shaped items, such as shoes. I think this is because the sides are very rigid.

I found it to be very heavy, which isn't a big deal rolling it, but I had to be very careful not to go over the airline weight limit.

I actually took mine back and traded it for the 26 inch Victorinox wheeled pack which I LOVE. It's lighter weight and much easier to pack. Plus there were other little details that I thought were better designed, right down to the little mini pockets inside that could be used for small items.

It goes well with the packing cubes. I used it a lot when my wife was doing practicums all over the country. It narrows at the top, which can make it a pain to get stuff in without straining the zippers. Overall, it is a good piece. The backpack is okay. Nice to have a matching set with straps.

Comments about Eagle Creek Switchback Max ES - 25 Inch:

This luggage is great. Plenty of packing space. Nice daypack that is easily removed or attached. I like the option of using the luggage as a backpack or pulling out the handle and rolling it around. Have used it both ways traveling. The lifetime "no matter what" guarantee from Eagle Creek is key. The only negative things I have to say is that it is a bit heavy coming in at 11 lbs. 8 oz. empty and it the daypack could have a chest strap, but I wouldn't leave home without it.

Took the Switchback on a 12day trip to Stuttgart GE and it performed great. Used the main suspension from airport through local rail systems to a friends house in the city. Used the daypack independently on the plane and for day trips. The little bit of foam padding in daypack helps load comfort (the daypack has a good volume).

My wife and I and two children recently spent two weeks traveling through Italy and Greece with whis bag and another lesser bag. The bag held up to planes, trains, automobiles and ferries while our other bag fell apart and had to be replaced. The backpack was actually comfortable and made it easy to maneuver around train stations and on streets while still keeping hold of children's hands. The front daypack was convenient for short jaunts, kept papers organized, and served as a convenient carry-on. The zip open water bottle holders were a great luxury.
