Comments about Deuter KangaKid Child Carrier:
We took this pack hiking before taking it on vacation to San Francisco. It took us a while on the hike to figure out the right fit for both our two year-old and the carrier (dad). The load adjusting straps are located inside the pack so getting that just right might require someone else's help. Once we got that cinched up most of load ended up on my hips so hiking was bearable but not nearly as comfortable as our Sherpani as this carrier allowed our toddler to shift his weight over to one side. My shoulders hurt after about 30 minutes.
Surprisingly, walking around the city was much more comfortable. Probably because of the even terrain of sidewalks versus rocky trail, my shoulders didn't hurt so much.
There is plenty of room to hold kid supplies for day-hiking. Love the outside mesh pockets and smaller organizer pockets. It is kind of a trick to get the kid in and out of it though since it doesn't stand up on its own. I prop it up against a tree or something if I am alone.
All in all I would not use this as a primary carrier but for running errands, farmer's market, shopping, and emergency/backup purposes it is a handy pack to have in the back of your van.

Great pack for taking the kids around town. The only problem is it doesn't stand up on its own so it's difficult to get the child in and out of unless the pack is already on your back.

I've had this backpack for 3 kids now! They all LOVE it! I can do work around the house, the yard, hiking, everything with it on! And, the way that it works, the weight is really close to your back, so it's awesome, very comfortable.
I use it almost daily, walking around outside, anytime I need my hands free, even cleaning around the house!
I tried on the Kelty one, and it for some reason really keeps the weight of the baby a lot further from your back, which makes the shoulder straps really dig into your shoulders, as compared to this one, that has the weight pretty evenly distributed from the hips/back/shoulders. Works great as soon as the baby can hold their head up!

Comments about Deuter KangaKid Child Carrier:
We went with this model over the larger, more "serious" hiking types because we figured we'd actually be able to use it regularly, not just for major excursions. So far our almost 11-month-old loves it and we find it more comfortable than the front carrier for his weight (somewhere around 22 pounds). It's great for hikes, but we also use it for walks from car to campus (about a mile) and bus travel. It took a bit of practice getting him in and out without help, but once he's up, the cuteness of a baby sticking out of a backpack can't be beat!

I bought these to travel to Chile with 4 kids (among them twin 1 year olds). Though we brought umbrella strollers, I wanted packs to be able to walk on beach and walk through rough terrain. These packs are incredible. Very well designed with a roomy backpack. The construction is superb. The zip-out carrier does not take a lot of room but is very comfy for the kids. Of course this pack is not as comfortable for the adult as a full frame pack, but totally reasonable nonetheless. Highly recommend.

Comments about Deuter KangaKid Child Carrier:
LOVE this backpack. The only reason it gets 4 stars instead of 5 is b/c it's not easy to get your kid in solo (a little floppy but once you figure it out, not a big deal) and it will not replace a full kid backpack for serious hikes. Also did not work for my husband who is very tall (over 6'6").That said, it was a godsend at airports (much easier to get on or off the plane, allows my hands to be free, we were super mobile with a rollie suitcase and my daughter on my back), the dog park and the zoo. Less cumbersome than a full backpack which i found overkill for everyday use. I've used it for a quick stroll to the market to prepping dinner. For guys, I'd get all sorts of positive comments b/c it's doesn't look like a baby carrier. There is a little pocket in the front of the waist belt for keys, id and some money/credit cards so you don't have to reach for that stuff.

Comments about Deuter KangaKid Child Carrier:
I am a nanny and the family I work for got this pack. I have used it a couple of times, but the baby (4 mos) is really too small for it still, so that is the first con. Another thing I don't like about it is the pockets are impossible to reach unless you take the pack off...and there's no stand so good luck holding it upright w/ the baby in it while you dig around looking for what you need in the pockets. The last downside is the lack of sunshade. The baby I care for has a hat but because the pack is too big for him, he slides to the side and the hat falls off. All in all I wouldn't recomend this since you'd end up having to carry a separate purse or small bag for your wallet, phone and camera anyway. It might be OK to use around the house and yard. It would be improved by having a pocket on the front straps for small stuff you might need in a hurry.
