Who knew? I opened up the package and discovered that the fork expanded to three times its original size making the cooking experience much safer than I ever thought. I felt like I was fishing for large mouth bass at a local pond but no, I was cooking safely over my huge campfire. Frankfurters grilled over an open fire never tasted so delicious. Absolutely delicious. Me and my 3 year old son loved our camping experience and these telescopic forks absolutely helped. Just be aware there is a weight limit. Great for hotdogs and marshmallows too but not at the same of course.
We just roasted up a whole bunch of s'mores and Peeps while camping with another family this weekend. Compared to the 2-rail forks from Coghlan's that are also available at REI, these compress shorter (short enough to fit in my "kitchen box") and extend longer. We also had along some Coghlan's extendable forks of a very similar design to this one, but the Rolla Roasters win out on several fronts: * extend longer, by a full 8 inches * come in a reusable plastic case (2 per), which is surprisingly valuable, as these are an awkward thing to pack. * American made * Available in multiple colors, which is kinda fun. Once they've been used, I don't think the ends of the fork will ever be shiny silver again, but I don't think this interferes with function.
The idea of the "rolling" Rotation is great. The long length sounds perfect for keeping a good distance from the flames so you don't burn yourself. Unfortunately the metal used for the telescoping portion is made far too thin to hold up to thicker food items (hot dogs, etc). This causes the stick to bend greatly which makes whatever you are cooking point downwards. In one night this caused multiple hot dogs to fall off and we were trying to identify a way to hold it up with support which defeats the purpose of it. For marshmallows and very light weight items, this product probably works good enough to get by.
These are the best roasters around. They're longer than the competition to let you stay farther back from a really hot fire. They also roll very smoothly and help you toast anything evenly. After accidentally sitting on one that was extended and bending it slightly (they are pretty skinny and lightweight though) it easily bent back into shape. I even stuck a hot dog with cheese on a roll on the roaster to toast the bun and melt the cheese all at once and it wasn't a problem! My fiancé loves marshmellows and uses these all the time, but marshmellow goo can be very difficult to clean off of the ends. If they could do something to make it easier to clean it'd be perfect. Expensive but worth it.
First you should know, I take smores very seriously. With that being said I ended up with these marshmelllow roasters and am very happy I did. The best part is that they are made of stainless steel so they rust or corrode like many of the other roaster out there. Next they designed the fork to rotate with respect to the handle and they put a little plastic part on there that lets you rotate the fork with a finger. Its very nice to be able to keep rotating your mashmellow one handed. It gives you the control to achieve the perfectly browned 'mellow that we should all strive to achieve. The telescoping design makes these much more compact than other models. The only downside to that is there is a bit of flex when you have hotdogs on there. Not bad and not a concern at all with marshmellows. If you demand excellence out of your smores, except no other!
The handle and the forks are really nice, and it's nice that they pack smaller and can telescope longer for use. I also thought that the rolling "technology" was ingenious. However the telescoping made the sticks more fragile. At some point on their first use one was probably stepped on, not sure if by human or dog, but it bent and became unrepairable. Both sticks also got warped at the top from use in the fire. If they made these more sturdy I'd highly recommend, but currently I can't.
I bought two sets of these. I insist on s'mores at every camping trip, as does my daughter, so roasting forks are a must in our camp gear. These are lightweight and come in different colors, which would be a nice perk for larger groups. The extension is smooth, easy to expand and retract, and does not slide back in if you were to hold the sticks vertically. The wooden handle has been treated and appears to be holding up well across washings. I took off a star because the ends are blunt - I'm sure this is a safety feature, but it can make it trickier to pierce things. The aluminum shaft is also wiggly inside of the wooden handle, and you can feel that jiggle when holding the fork fully extended with weight on the end. Thus far, these are the best I have found, and I would get them again should I ever need a replacement.
These work perfect for marshmallows and hot dogs but bratts are too heavy and will slide off. Easy to clean, just burn the residue off the forks as much as possible (I let them get red hot) then rub them in some sand and the ends shine up like new.
For Easter camping we need to roast Peeps and for that we need roasting forks. I had some, but the tines on those were too thick. There ones have thinner tones that won’t poke huge holes in the marshmallows. Also they are made in Idaho.
I got these nifty little roasters for my five-year-old for her first camping trip. The extended length of these kept her at a safe distance from the fire and the thumb roller made it much easier for her to handle her marshmallow.
