Comments about Mountain Hardwear G50 Jacket - Men's:
This jacket is great, warm, comfortable and durable. I was wearing it when my pick-up truck rolled (I was hit by a tractor trailer) and although my arms were bleeding, the jacket had no holes in it. One gentle washing later, all the glass and blood was gone, and the jacket is still in perfect shape.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear G50 Jacket - Men's:
I've been using my G50 almost daily - from commutes to the office to climbing mountains. Although I have several softshells to choose from, I always grab the G50 because of it's perfect fit. It's light, comfortable and does a good job at resisting rain.
With that being said, I was a little disappointed at the durability of the fabric. The areas around my shoulder (where I wore my pack) and under the arms (which rub when walking) are starting to show minor signs of wear. This may seem normal but I've only had this jacket for 8 months! Looking at the reviews for the Synchro jacket (which is the same jacket with taped seams) proves that I'm not the only one with this problem.
Either way, I'll continue to use this jacket but I doubt I'll replace it with another product which uses this material.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear G50 Jacket - Men's:
I am very pleased with the G50. The cut, weight, simplicity, and functionality make this piece one of my best. As a guide, retailer, and public consumer the garment has kept me safe and comfortable in endeavors that range from telemark, climbing, kayaking, and dog sledding expeditions, back to the theater and board meetings. Hardware has perfected a garment that meets the needs of the urban jungle with the needs of outdoor world. Nice Job Guys....

just got back from the Sierras north of Yosemite NP we had rain the first day and clouds the second...before we left for the hills I Nikwaxed my G50 and it repelled water like a ducks back and kept me dry and warm....the next day did a 5 mile hike under threatening skies and the G50 kept me warm during stops for views along a ridge and breathed excellent while hiking and working up a sweat....

Comments about Mountain Hardwear G50 Jacket - Men's:
Maybe I did something wrong, but I had this jacket for 3 hours in very light rain and I was soaked!! I thought that it was just a malfunction so I returned it for another one, and it did the exact same thing the next day! I then returned it again. I know what people are thinking......."It's water RESISTANT not water proof", But I assure you 20 min in light rain is NOT water resistant! For the price it should perform MUCH better than this.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear G50 Jacket - Men's:
OK, you've already figured out from the reviews that this is a great jacket. It is. I absolutely love mine. It is very windproof, and for a full-on jacket, is fairly light. Not ultra-light-backpacking light, but pretty darned good. I use it daily for hard bike rides.
There are a lot of stunning reviews for this fabulous jacket. So let me nitpick a little (MtHdwr, you guys listening?)...First, fit. I got a medium. Seemed to fit in the store. But there are no pit-zips, and being "waterproof-breathable" it's pretty humid. So I like to zip down the front and pull up the sleeves. The sleeves have this goofy design to keep wind out without elastic or a velcro draw. Works great unless you want to pull the sleeves up. I ended up returning the medium for a large to get a little more room to pull up the sleeves, and also a little more room in the shoulders. The large is a little bigger in the torso than I like (I'm a skinny cyclist and mounaineer)so you get the ol' zipper-boner thing going on -- but overall, the large was a little better. I'm 6', 160#.
If I were redesigning this, I'd make the sleeve ends with something that allows them to be pulled up over the elbows in warmer (and still windy) weather. Like elastic, or a velcro closure. I'd also maybe add pit-zips (additional weight notwithstanding.) In highly aerobic sports you do tend to get wet under this garmet. More ventilation would definitely help.
More details: I changed out the little plastic keeper for the neck cinch with one of the ones on an REI "tuff-lite" stuff sack. They are tiny, and much less obtrusive. I like it a lot better that way. The neck cinch could be better, but at least it has one. The new Marmot garments tend to have roomy collars, without a cinch, and in windy conditions, you really want something to cinch down the neck area. The G50 also has a cinch at the torso on either side.
When I ride, I leave the pockets open, and torso and neck cinch wide open. On the way down, close up the pockets, tighten the torso, and close the collar. For speeds up to 35 mph, you just don't get any wind with this jacket.
Overall, I'll go for this jacket, with some underlayers in colder weather, for anything from about 30's to 50's or even low 60's ... for mountain riding. For hiking, you can probably go 10 degrees colder. Much below that, and you'll probably want something more substantial.
It has a very supple hand for such a windproof material. I've owned it about half a year, so have had a chance to use it on those occasional cold summer days in Colorado, as well as through the Colorado winter, on all but the coldest days.
I'd say just get it. You won't be disappointed. Looks great, too...especially the black.

Perfect weight for October-December, March-May (northern lats). Enough room for a base or light fleece. Take it to the woods, take it to the streets, it's the G fiddy, and it can't be beat. Sorry.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear G50 Jacket - Men's:
I appreciate the quality construction with the zipper flap, nice zippers, and more. The pockets are good for stashing a map, cell, phone, and more. And I like wearing a logo that few people know. But there are some flaws:
1. The jacket pills terribly and requires regular shaving on the sleeves.
2. The mesh pockets provide no hand warming.
3. The water repellancy wore off very quickly.
So...I would save it for camping trips, because you'll wear it out (as I do) with out daily use. And I am shopping for a new light daily jacket.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear G50 Jacket - Men's:
I'm 5'6" but have broad shoulders (size 48-50), waist size 38. Normally wear XL but since things tend to be cut snug nowadays, XXL fits great. Still have room to wear a sweater underneath. *** I wore this walking around all day in London in November 07 and it handled the constant rain and 30 degree weather superbly. The exterior of the jacket stopped beading water, but I never felt wet inside. Only complaint is that the material started piling/fuzzing on the sleeves and shoulders from constant rubbing from my messenger bag. I still think this is a great all around jacket for any occasion. Fully waterproof and very breathable. I own 3 in different colors.

This jacket simply shines in all conditions. It is very breathable and can even be worn when hiking in colder conditions. The jacket repels water even in a heavy downpour and will easily keep you dry long enough to get into your tent or under your tarp.
