Comments about REI CoolMax Liner Socks:
For years I've worn polypro socks while hiking, and these are the most satisfying. The best socks are ones you don't notice, and these rate high in that regard.
I hiked over 40 miles in the Rocky's wearing these, REI Merino Wool socks, and boots that fit me well, and I didn't get a single hotspot or blister. I had a buddy who got two bad blisters on that trip. He bought two pairs of these the day after we got back.
One tip: turn these socks inside out before you wear them so the seam doesn't rub your toes.
An excellent sock at an excellent value.

Comments about REI CoolMax Liner Socks:
Last year I conducted a few months of empirical testing on available liner socks in preparation for a long summer backpacking trip. I tested a range of brands (REI, Wigwam, others), materials (CoolMax, Silk, Polypro) and of course prices. These REI Coolmax were comfortable inside both wool and synthetic outer socks, and regulated temperature well on day hikes and weekend backpacking trips. I like them, but on the trip they were not my favorites.
On my longer trip (admittedly in the desert) they did not seem to wick as well as they had in training, and (perhaps as a result) they got funky much faster than the Wigwam Gobis I also had with me. The white shows the dirt and never really comes clean (if you care about that sort of thing).
Others have noted issues with the toe seams, I found the cut was too straight across the toe compared to my feet resulting in some uncomfortable bunching in front of my smaller toes, particularly when the sock was wet.
For my personal feet, in hot weather with a full load I like the Gobis are better, but these CoolMax ones are a nice sock at a reasonable price and slightly less weight. I still use them for day hikes.

Comments about REI CoolMax Liner Socks:
The seam that covers the top of the toe is horrible. After about mile 12 of a hike you might as well have bunched up a couple strands of fishing line and let them grind away on the top of your toes. I like the Coolmax fabric but will definitely be looking at where the HARD seams are in my next pair of socks.

Comments about REI CoolMax Liner Socks:
I've worn these on multiple backpacking trips as well as many, many dayhikes. In Florida sweaty feet can be a problem. Not with these. They wick away any moisture that I throw at it. No hot spots or blisters what-so-ever. They're easy to wash and dry fast so you really only need 2-3 pairs. The seam could pose a problem but I wear them inside out so the seam doesn't rub on my feet. At [$] each you can't beat 'em. I just wish they came in a small as I have small feet. Other than that great socks.

Comments about REI CoolMax Liner Socks:
I got these as a whim walking through my local REI the other week and am sure glad I did. I've seen a few reviews that say the toe area is not comfortable but the seam across the toe of the pair I bought is on the outside of the sock and not rubbing against my toes at all(why all socks aren't like this I'll never understand). Might be a newer feature...? Whatever it is I've got to say it's been a toe saver! My biggest beef with hiking boots of all kinds is that my toes and sock just don't want to work with the boot and I always get bunched up seams especially when layering socks. So the fact that it doesn't happen with these liners has been really nice.
They do seem to be fragile and do not ever really get "clean" but I don't care about how they look and for the price they're not bad at all. I have taken to line drying them to keep them from extra wear.

Comments about REI CoolMax Liner Socks:
These socks are really great--I actually wear them with my boots when riding my motorcycle in the summer. They aren't cushy at all, but they do keep my feet cool, which is a must when you need to be in your boots all day.

Comments about REI CoolMax Liner Socks:
I have over 2 dozen pair of these, bought back in 1988/89 and all are still in top notch condition. I have been wearing them 12 - 14 hrs per day, EVERY DAY for over 20 years. Keep my feet warm in winter and cool in summer.

Comments about REI CoolMax Liner Socks:
I use these when I am wearing heavier socks, especially while backpacking. At the campsite they make great camp socks (when wearing lighter shoes) as they are light, airy, and comfortable. They dry quickly and clean up well.
