The REI Member Dividend
The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.
Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.
Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

Comments about Benchmade 551 Griptilian Serrated Locking Knife - Sand:
I received this knife as a going away/ birthday gift when i left for the Army. I've had this knife for about a little over 6 months now and i can't complain. this knife has held up wonderfully to everything I've put it through. i use this knife tons of times everyday for everything from cutting 550 cord to cleaning my weapon to opening up MRE boxes. it is just such a useful sized knife. the serrations are spectacular, they've stayed very sharp and just rip through anything in front them. the blade has stayed sharp i only had to sharpen it recently and i didn't take much to get it back to a razor. although the knife doesn't look menacing it'll surely get any job done.

Comments about Benchmade 551 Griptilian Serrated Locking Knife - Sand:
REI shipped very promptly. Received in just a couple of working days. Had the 551 in black and satin. Liked it, but gave it away to a relative. Replaced with the 551 BLK and Sand. Love this color combination much better.
Locks up tight. No play. Blade is wicked sharp out of the box. Benchmade makes a great quality knife!

Comments about Benchmade 551 Griptilian Serrated Locking Knife - Sand:
I was unaware that the coating may begin to flake off. I have not had this happen yet. I am on my second year of use. I assume my use may be considered "light use" when compared to what I have read here.
That being said, I found this knife to be very well made with smooth and stable function. Im very happy with it.

Comments about Benchmade 551 Griptilian Serrated Locking Knife - Sand:
The good: excellent design. Ergonomic and easy one-handed operation. Axis mechanism helps keep fingers out of the way when closing. Extremely sharp and holds an edge for a while. I don't cut boxes or paper, I only use it for: rope, wood, line, food, construction tasks, etc. I am on year two of owning this knife. The sand color wears off but it's a tool... not a fashion statement. I actually have more wear on the steel clip than the handle.
The bad: nothing I can see yet. I need to have it professionally sharpened after 2+ years of almost daily use. I touch it up with a stone but I am horrible at it, so time for a pro to do it.
Bottom line: best overall everyday knife I have owned.

Comments about Benchmade 551 Griptilian Serrated Locking Knife - Sand:
The knife comes sharp, has a large, comfortable handle, but like other reviewers have said, the paint rubs off and the blade dulls quickly. I like it, but it is not the quality you would expect for the price.

Overall a well crafted product. The only issue being blade wiggle but that is easy to fix.

Comments about Benchmade 551 Griptilian Serrated Locking Knife - Sand:
I've owned this knife for about two years. Much of the sand finish has worn away. The blade has a lot of side wiggle and adjusting doesn't help much. The plastic feels cheap. The knife is still alive after two years with me, so that is saying something. The steel is strong (154cm), but dulls very quickly. Not horrible, not great... just meehhhh.

Comments about Benchmade 551 Griptilian Serrated Locking Knife - Sand:
This is a great knife, but as the title says, there is a problem with it. The blade dulls quickly and requires regular maintenance and sharpening. It definitely needs to be taken care of from time to time, depending on how heavily it is used. However, the AXIS lock opening/closing system is really nice and provides smooth deployment of the blade every time. I've had one for almost five years now and it hasn't caused me any major problems besides the occasional sharpening. It is fairly sturdy for a knife its size and I would recommend it to those who adventure frequently and to those deployed overseas. All in all, it's a great knife for the price, but not quite up to par by Benchmade standards.

Comments about Benchmade 551 Griptilian Serrated Locking Knife - Sand:
I purchased this based off of the reputation of Benchmade and to replace my CRKT that has disappeared. I was looking for an everyday pocket knife that would stand up to cardboard boxes and cutting fishing line while out on my float tube. I returned the first knife because the blade chipped just after a weeks use. I receive packages on regular bases and used the knife to open them and found the tip of the blade had chipped. All in all I still have the knife and it has a chip on the main part of the blade. Needless to say I will probably return it and search for another knife!
