Comments about Brunton 8096-AR Compass:
This is an excellent compass. This does include a Declination scale, some reviewer below said it doesn't. Also, its used with a GPS because it has the UTM grids printed on the compass its self, so you can read your coordinates off a GPS, and then Apply them to the map via the UTM grid so you know precisely where your at, and then you have the big view of the world around you via the map, rather then the tiny GPS screen.
Also, a tip on preventing the printed scales and letters of the UTM from fading off, cover the back portion of the Compass with clear Packing tape, that way the print will never wear away. Also, if you get some sand in the bezel you can remove the bezel from the compass and clean it out so that you don't scratch all the numbers off of the face of the compass, that would be bad. And another thing, lifetime warranty from Brunton, and they are EXCELLENT with the warranty.

Comments about Brunton 8096-AR Compass:
Ok, before reviewing a product you should use it for the intended purpose! This compass was specifically designed for adventure races. The declination is set on the back of the bezel. It is designed this way to avoid east/west confusion when you are deep into a race and your mental state starts to deteriorate. The magnification on the bezel is also a great feature. The red lines in the bezel make for easy map alignment. The goal with this product is to take frequent and fast readings and it does the job very well. The circle over circle alignment is great for fast movement. Used it in the field and loved it!

Comments about Brunton 8096-AR Compass:
This compass is stated as a GPS compass but I have yet to figure out how it integrates with a GPS unit. It has all the usual things a compass should have like map templates and scales. Mine does have an adjustment for declination even though another review says it doesn't, although it is somewhat confusing to tell if you have adjusted the right way or the wrong way. Some of the other features require a good understanding of orienteering to make use of. Included instructions are detailed. Use this compass if you are navigating with a map. If you have a more limited understanding of orienteering, then you are probably better off with a mapping GPS unit.

Comments about Brunton 8096-AR Compass:
Used this for the first time at 7,000 ft in the Sierras in winter. It was an accurate pointer but for some reason an air bubble formed and grew inside the compass. Also, there is no adjustment for declination. It fell apart in my pack but I was able to snap it back together. Still, it would have worked had I been lost. I will buy a better model, since a compass, when really needed, could be my most important piece of gear.
