The ubiquitous Tri-Cam from C.A.M.P. USA® offers true versatility and performance. This comprehensive set is a must for any climber's rack.

With a width coverage from 16 - 41mm, this set of four can handle many climber's needs; size ranges overlap for extra convenience
Made from hardened anodized aluminum for lasting service and reliability; sizes are color-coded for easier identification in your rack
Lightweight Dyneema slings offer superb strength to weight and have excellent UV-resistance for low-bulk strength that lasts season after season
When used in passive mode as a chock, Tri-Cam can fit a wide variety of crack types, from flaring to uneven
Camming mode results in a tripod configuration that works well in parallel cracks, slight flares and horizontals
As with all climbing protection, placement and usage practice with guided instruction recommended before use on route

I really have started to like my tricams. I got them when I was a brand new trad leader, and was a bit intimidated and confused to try to place them. However, after playing around with it a bit, i realized it is not that hard. They fit in soooo many places that a SLCD would not, shallow pockets, flaring cracks, etc. And you can use them as nuts! They take up much much less space on your rack than cams covering the same range.

Even with practice they are a bit slower, more tedious to place than a normal cam. If you are at a comfortable stance they are great to place, save your cams for where you think you might be more pumped. Lastly, they are great for building anchors. You might have used most of your cams on the climb, but I usually have 1-2 tricams left, their versatility makes them easy to find places for when building your anchor.

Tri-cams are hands down my favorite kind of gear. As a second I feel that they are super reliable but also easy to clean. It doesn't take long periods of time to clean(as nuts can) and they can also can't "walk" like cams. This set of four is a great start to build your rack, since it can be placed as a nut as well as a cam. They are light and COLORFUL :) !!!!
I deeply feel that this is a great buy! I have climbed with these in Yosemite (North Buttress), Lovers Leep (Strawberry, CA, Donner and other places. There's almost always a good placement for them!

There is no middle ground with Tricams, either you love them or hate them. Personally I don't do a route without them on my rack. Granted it takes a little time to learn how to place them but when you do it's game on. They will go where other pro can't.

The vast majority of my climbing is sport climbing which is readily available where I live. I got these primarily for use on mixed climbs. Since I don't do much trad climbing, I didn't want to spend a lot of money on expensive Cams. Tri-cams were a good, less expensive alternative. Compared to standard cams, these are hard to place, but with practice they're fine. Each tri-cam covers a good range, and can be used in several different configurations making them extremely versatile. As others have stated, these can be hard to remove, so invest in in a good nut tool if you don't want end up loosing them because they got stuck.

It is true that Tri-Cams take a bit of practice to use well, but as others have said, they work where nothing else well. Furthermore, they are excellent for use at anchors where you have a bit more time and hopefully both hands to place them - this way, you don't burn cams that you want for the pitch ahead.

A word of caution: tri-cams that have held a fall, especially smaller ones, can be close to impossible to remove.

Tri-cams stand alone in their category. They are not the easiest pieces to place but they aren't as hard to place as everyone says. I think they are actually more difficult to clean. They work great in pockets and will make a bomber placement where nothing else will even fit. On certain rock types these can be a life saver. This set of 4 is also the 4 that you will use on a regular basis. Buy this set first because the only other ones you might want will be the new white and black peices.

I ahve been using these for several seasons and at first was a little intimidated by them cause its not your usual pull and go cam. But for the weight and price these are great little jobs to add to any rack. Give it some practice and soon they'll be what you're looking for.
