Comments about Continental Grand Prix 4000:
I've put about 1000 miles on them, and the number of flats I've had is unacceptable. I even blew a hole in my sidewall (dangerous!). They're fun to ride on very smooth, clean surfaces, but I think the weather-beaten paths here in the Northwest are a little much for them.

Comments about Continental Grand Prix 4000:
These tires are very light and fast. They are also very sticky which is great for traction and steering, but VERY bad for punctures. I assume the Vectran layer is not very tightly woven. I've had more flats with these than any other tire I've ever used. The sidewall is also very thin, so keeping them at high pressure (120 lb) is critical to prevent cracking and pinch flats. Great tire for track use, bad for commuting unless your area has very smooth roads and unusually low debris.

Comments about Continental Grand Prix 4000:
These tires have excellent grip, great cornering and low rolling resistance. They would be great to ride on EXCEPT they're so prone to punctures. For this reason, I cannot recommend them.
While running on set on from the end of July through the middle of September, I had more flats with these tires than I had the rest of the year with other models combined, which is saying something given the prime weather.
For real road-riding, I would avoid these, instead using Continental Ultra Gatorskins (for example).

Comments about Continental Grand Prix 4000:
I have a set of these tires on my ultra-light road bike and have put over 3000 miles on them with only 1 puncture. Mileage includes recreational rides, extensive touring, and commuting on surfaces ranging from smooth dry asphalt, wet asphalt, extremely rough asphalt, and concrete to hard packed dirt & gravel. I've ridden in side winds strong enough to nearly knock me off my bike and have never felt the tires loose traction even for an instant. I'd recommend the Continental Grand Prix 4000s to anyone. They are well worth the price!

Comments about Continental Grand Prix 4000:
Conti GP4000 is a very good road tire: very light weight, excellent traction, both dry and wet. Great tire for climbing and acceleration moves. New Activated Silica Compound, while provides excellent grip and low rolling resistance, tends to pick up and hold glass chards from road side, and allows tire punctures as wheels rotate. Getting 1800 to 2000 miles for overall tire wear.

Comments about Continental Grand Prix 4000:
What I like best is that these foldable Conti's are much easier to mount on wheels than were the wire rimmed tires that used to be on my bike. (Everyone says that is an individual thing, but I'm sticking with foldables for this reason.) The ride is smoother. I've ridden over small debris without problems. At 1300+ miles there is plenty of tread left, but I have cracking where the sidewall meets the top surface. I checked the serious training box because they are a racing tire and priced accordingly. They're a sprinter's tire because Thor Hushovd rides Conti's.

Comments about Continental Grand Prix 4000:
Over 3000 miles on rural Appalachian roads of north Georgia with many high speed descents. Not a single flat! NONE! Lots of cuts on the tires, but they have held up to the task (but no goatheads, which caused me many a flat in OK, TX, NM and CO).
Note that I am 180 lb. running 100 psi (following the 15% drop formula). Maybe those with many punctures are caused by running Too Much PSI (lower pressure conforms to pavement, higher pressure resists conforming - time for a paradigm shift - typical cycling conventional wisdom has been proven wrong-minded yet again).
Couldn't ask for a better gripping, wearing, durable high performance clincher - equal in feel to a mid-range tubular IMHO (due in part to lightweight wheels). Vit Open CX is a great tire, but not nearly as durable.
You guys with so many punctures are riding the wrong tire for the route - Conti never claimed this was a Schwalbe Marathon. After all, this is a RACE clincher. You should be using the Conti Gatorskin Hardshell if you want a more durable tire. A Vit Open or Mich Pro 3 would have even more punctures than the GP4000 - and both of those are great clichers in their own right. Don't blame the tire for the rider's poor choice, I say.
Note the black versions of the Conti GP4000 have the Black Chili compound - the color versions do not.

Comments about Continental Grand Prix 4000:
I replaced my stock Bontrager Race X Lites (700x23) with the Contis (700x25), with consideration on the latter's high TPI rating of 330, and of my weight (190+). To date, I'm still glad with the switch. I average 120 miles a week (using recommended 110 PSI) and the ride is noticeably smoother and no change in performance. No flats as of yet (knock on wood) but taking into consideration the feedback from the other Pacific NW folks in this thread (so i carry a spare tire for the long trips).

Comments about Continental Grand Prix 4000:
I was surprised at how many reviews stated the tires punctured easily- I have over 4500 miles on mine and have maybe had 3 flats? Makes me wonder what tire pressure they're running. Regardless, Bicycling Magazine loves these tires, too, so I'm not alone. For the price, weight and durability- BTW, don't EVER use these on a trainer, they'll shred and you'll cry- I don't think there's a better tire out there.

Comments about Continental Grand Prix 4000:
I am surprised to see so many reports of punctures. I've ridden a set of the Conti 4000s over the past 18 months and got a total of about 4000 miles on them, with one puncture. I live in a place where goathead thorns are common and the roads often have debris of one kind or another. I also often ride on the dirt roads in the mountains and plains here in Boulder, so the tires are not babied. I've had similar experiences with the Conti 3000 and the 4-Season tires. All of which have been fast, reasonably light and excellent handling tires.
