Comments about Klean Kanteen Stainless-Steel Water Bottle with Loop-Top Cap - 40 oz.:
I bought a 40 oz stainless steel bottle at the REI in North Dallas, Texas, but had to return it. To test the quality of my new bottle, I used a refrigerator magnet. Quality 18/8 steel is NOT magnetic. To my surprise, this bottle was. The magnet also stuck to the other 40 oz and 28 oz Klean Kanteen bottles at both the North Dallas and Plano stores (attraction to bottles varied, showing the varying quality in the bottles). The magnet did not stick at all to the other 18/8 stainless steel bottles made by different manufacturers in the stores. The 28 oz Klean Kanteen I bought last year was fine (the magnet had almost no attraction). These bottles are made in China. And after what I've seen, I don't trust the quality.Magnetism suggest heavy metals in the steel, such as nickel. Nickel is a known carcinogen ([@]). I bought the other 18/8 stainless brand found in the store. Test for yourself - it's easy to do so. For me, NOT so clean kanteen...

Comments about Klean Kanteen Stainless-Steel Water Bottle with Loop-Top Cap - 40 oz.:
I was all set to buy a couple of SIGGs, but I stumbled on these and sold just about immediately. I bought primarily for use as soccer water bottles, but they are terrific all-around. I also have a SIGG, and these are way better.
Advantages over SIGG:
- Capacity.
SIGG doesn't make anything this large, biggest I've seen is 32 oz. This is 40 oz. 8 ounces doesn't sound like much until you run out of water.
- Fast to open, fast to drink.
The combo of the wide mouth and big threads is priceless when it's hot and you're parched. For SIGGs, I feel like I'm unscrewing the thing forever, then sipping like it's a cocktail.
- Durable.
I throw my bottles around a lot. The sides eventually ding up, but so far they've never leaked or had any other issues. I'm sure eventually they'll give up, but they've taken a lot of abuse.
I do like SIGGs, don't get me wrong -- they are lighter and have slick graphics, but they aren't nearly the workhorses these babies are.
Worth every dime.

Comments about Klean Kanteen Stainless-Steel Water Bottle with Loop-Top Cap - 40 oz.:
I'm rating this one lower than the 27 oz., which I'd bought earlier. I don't know whether the 40 oz is older stock, but the cap is definitely inferior, though they're both interchangeable screw-plug designs.
The cap on the 27 oz. has a flat inside end (similar to a thermos bottle cap), minimizing plastic contact with the water, while the one on the 40 oz. is hollow, allowing water to flow up into the cap. This not only maximizes the water's exposure to the plastic (which I'd bought this product to avoid), but it has nooks and crannies that are harder to clean. The cap on the 40 oz. bottle is inferior on the outside, too; it's smaller in diameter, so it exposes the lip you drink from much more. A female cap for both bottles would have been a better design, but at least the 27 oz. cap overhangs the lip a fair amount. The 27 oz. cap also has vertical ridges that make it much easier to grip and twist, while the 40 oz. cap is smooth as well as smaller in diameter, making it harder to grip, especially with wet hands.
The 40 oz. bottle itself also has a ridge around the inside of the shoulder, which I assume to be a weld bead (stainless steel, I hope), which the 27 oz. doesn't have. It's a little sharp, and makes it harder to clean out thoroughly (it's impossible to see the ridge itself from outside the bottle unaided, though a dental mirror might make it possible).
I'll probably keep the bottle anyway because the cost of returning it is so high these days; I may just order a replacement stainless steel cap from the manufacturer, since REI doesn't offer them. But I'm much less satisfied with the 40 oz. than I am with the 27 oz.

Comments about Klean Kanteen Stainless-Steel Water Bottle with Loop-Top Cap - 40 oz.:
This bottle seems like a great idea, but I bought two and on the first use, discovered the top didn't tighten. I can tighten it around and then tighten a little more and it gets loose again. So I tried not over tightening, but found that when I picked it up by the lid, the lid slip so that it was partially out. The second bottle seemed okay for a couple of weeks and now it has the same problem.
Great to avoid nasty plastics, but now I'll die of dehydration because my bottle leaks out all my water. I think I'm going back to Nalgene now that they've fixed the plastic. Those were indistructable and came with loops on the lids.

Comments about Klean Kanteen Stainless-Steel Water Bottle with Loop-Top Cap - 40 oz.:
I had a Sigg water bottle and I took it with me on a week long river rafting trip. The cap kept on unscrewing and nearly falling out of the boat. The guide had a Klean Kanteen 40 oz. I ended up just drinking out of his. The cap stays on, no metallic taste, great spout for sipping and it retains a cool temperature. But the best part about it is the company itself. Environmentally friend company and the factory in china is one of the only clean factories. I also believe it has good working conditions for the workers. All around a great buy.

every one had made the obvious pros on this product altho i have already had to return this once. the cap strips easily when tightening and this starts leaks.
this is an EXTREAMLY durable bottle, mine took a good 20 foot fall when bouldering along a river in the highcountry and only ended up with one small dent and some scratches.
the bad top is easily remidied, just return it for a new one REI wont give you a hassle!

This bottle is the best.
I won't repeat all the previous praises that I couldn't agree with more.
I love to use mine on those long cold nights camping as a hot water bottle. Just fill it up with hot water, slide it into a cozy sock and your toasty for the night.
A few previous post have mentioned a metallic taste. This taste is just a residue from the manufacturing process. Grinding and polishing will leave a microscopic metallic residue in the very fine textured stainless steel surface that will eventually go away but can be removed with a good scrub with detergent and hot water.

I just purchased the bottle and found rust inside. I, of course, am taking it back and will probably try another one....

Comments about Klean Kanteen Stainless-Steel Water Bottle with Loop-Top Cap - 40 oz.:
We purchased two of these and both of them had major lid problems after only a few days. We turned them back in. If you screw the caps down reasonably tight to be water tight, ours could not be reopened due to the gasket ring slipping into the threads thereby locking the cap on. It took brute force to open them again using a lever through the hole in the cap. The problem kept repeating itself no matter what variations we tried to make it work. They need a design change for us to try them again.

40 oz. capacity is great. The stainless steel is a little heavy, but so far it's been a great bottle. I found the "metal" taste went away after bit of use (where did it go? In me!). I haven't experienced any rusting (as one commenter did), but have only had the bottle a few weeks.
One thing it needs is a lanyard for the top. I think it's available separately, but IMO it but should be included.
