Comments about REI Spirit III GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
Perfect rugged and classic mountaineering boot. Took them up Mount Rainier for crevasse rescue training. Even with crampons on (front-pointing) in steep terrain, the boots felt comfortable. The boot is insulated and warm enough for most ice climbing even in winter. The ankle height provides good support for French-technique cramponing. Combined with gators, this shoe used to be the standard for alpine climbing back in the 60's.

Comments about REI Spirit III GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
I wore these boots for one and a half weeks to break them in . all day each day on my feet. they felt great, fit great and fell apart at the heels (Both boots). I thought the older style with the rubber heel might be more securely cemented, but those did the same thing in only three days. Raichle needs to change whatever cement they are using to secure the heels on these boots. they are great boots other than the fact that they quickly fall apart under steady prolonged use. Not Good.. REI Please fix. first problem i have ever had with any rei product in past 13 years. Thank god for the guarantee [...]

Comments about REI Spirit III GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
Bought these boots 1 week before hiking Tanner Trail in the Grand Canyon b/c the soles separated from my Vasques the week before the hike. Had a short period of time to break them in so I wore them everyday for 12-16 hours. Did not fully break in before the hike (and still not broken in), but they felt great on the hike and held up nicely. Tanner is a rugged trail and the boots did not slide, felt snug, provided great ankle support and withstood the traditional dipping of the toes in the frigid Colorado River. I was a little skeptical of the boot considering how stiff they were out of the box, but they stood way above the other boots I tried on (Vasque, Marmot, and Asolo)
I would only recommend these for the avid hiker. They are a little heavy and much too durable for a recreational day hiker.
The boot is actually made by Raichle...a Swiss company that specializes in ski boots.
Overall, a great boot and I look forward to strapping up the laces on my next hike.

Comments about REI Spirit III GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
these are the most comfortable boots i have encountered out of the box, but on taking them out a short three miles, the sole rubber began to separate from the heal of the boot. with more research, i found this was a very common problem with these boots. this leaves me very disappointed with rei (and raichle who designed and made the boots)

These boots are great! I am on my second pair of Spirit's and they fit my feet great. I have long toes...wide toe box...and a slightly high arch.
They fit me like a glove!

Comments about REI Spirit III GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
I owned the II's for 3 years before needing a new pair and the III's were a no-brainer. I like the one piece construction and the fact that they changed the grommet for lacing up to be metal (vs a loop on the II's).
I use mine year round as they're easy to attach crampons and snow shoes or comfortable enough to do some local hikes.
I did add a foot bed for additional warmth in winter and I would recommend a 1/2 size larger to accomodate heavy socks.
No need to waterproof yet either

Comments about REI Spirit III GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
I have been very impressed by these boots. Break-in time was fine; after three day hikes of around 6 miles each, they felt great and moved well. My fourth time out in these boots was a 28 miles in a day hike along Franconia ridge in NH. The boots performed very well and my feet were in great shape considering the mileage with a 30 lb pack. Of note: the soles grip rock very well. The boots feel light and strike a good balance between stability and freedom of movement. When I tried them on in the store, right away they felt like they fit my foot well. They feel true to size; I wear them with a liner sock and one pair of thick wool hiking socks.

These boots are great. They are heavy duty, but very comfortable. I had some squeaking on mine where the tongue tucks in and the leather rubs. I lathered on two coats of saddle soap and have not had a problem since. If you need a tough boot with comfort, this is it.

They are great boots, Very warm in cold weather but arent to hot in summer either, I love them for the quality's that it has it puts the weight of them aside, which I dont think is to bad. They are very comfortable and I was walking around town with them the first day I bought them with no problems. They have great support around your ankles. I would recommend this boot for all uses.
