      Perfect for carrying my laptop when that is all I'm packing. It also fits nicely in a larger bag. The outside pocket holds my power adapter, mouse, and a few cds or dvds. Good price. However, don't expect this to be your only laptop bag.

      I wanted a "real" backpack, not a laptop bag, but I needed something to protect my laptop. I have this pretty much always in my backpack, and the combination works great. Plus, I can take it out and I have the space for whatever I want.

      My backpack doesn't get smashed around too much, but for the last two years my Kelty backpack, and this laptop sleeve, have served me well.

      I commute to work by bicycle every day, and do a lot of business travel as well. Still going strong.

      The only thing I'd knock it for is not having a lot more padding in the edges, but that's never been a problem.

      I love that it opens from the top and from the side, so I can use it either with a backpack or a briefcase, and not have to remove the sleeve; great for air travel. It doesn't have much in the way of pockets, but that isn't so important to me because I almost always carry the sleeve inside another bag.

      i upgraded my 12" powerbook to a 15.4" macbook pro. love my brenthaven book bag with integrated padded sleeve for my 12" powerbook, but i was not interested in replacing the entire bag to fit my new 15.4" laptop. i can reuse the book bag for the larger computer by replacing the original padded sleeve with this one.

      what makes this sleeve perfect for the job? most competing sleeves offer too little padding or do not open on the short end (so you can remove your laptop from your bookbag without having to take the sleeve out completely first). this one is perfect, and it doubles as a light-duty solution when that's all you need.

        I wanted a compact case to carry my laptop computer on trips but now I use it every day too. I bought a clip on strap for $10 but the case also has two comfortable handles to use. I would definitely recommend this case. After shopping at different this stores, this was just what I was looking for.

        For work and for personal use, this is REI at it's best - practical and economical. I don't know why the shoulder strap isn't included. However, as a simple sleeve to keep your stuff together and protected for daily use (indoors) this is the best thing around. Luckily for REI, no one else is making anything that competes in its price range.

          I just got a laptop for the first time. I have a leather Coach briefcase designed to also hold a laptop, so when I went on a plane trip recently, I used that. But I thought it was a bit heavy, too nice for everyday use, and perhaps too bulky for travel, so I was looking for a sleeve.

          I read that some of the neoprene sleeves sold on the Apple site had bled into the white plastic of the MacBooks, so I was leering of anything similar.

          Still, I wanted a sleeve and looked at a number of places. The REI sleeve seemed to be the best mix of affordable price, heavy-duty construction, and convenience (you can open it from the side or the top).

          I mostly leave my laptop at home, so I don't necessarily need a day-to-day protective case, so I anticipate that this will be exactly what I need.

          I purchased this computer sleeve to protect my iBook G4 on a trip to visit my daughter in Taiwan. I used it with the Eagle Creek Clip-On Travel Strap[...] and I was more than satisfied with it. It kept me from having to purchase a clunky computer briefcase. It has a pocket on the front in which I placed my USB cords and plugs (the pocket is mesh, and is not truly protected--zippered plastic bags can take care of that). I have never had a problem with the computer falling out of the sleeve, and have used the sleeve nonstop (as a laptop carrier/briefcase) since I purchased it in November 2006. It is a great buy for the money!

          This case works great for storing my computer. The other review complains that they don't think this is a good stand alone computer case. I wouldn't really carry this with me everywhere I go. But I almost always want to bring additional things in addition to my computer so I bring my backpack. This case can hold my computer and computer things, and I just leave it in my backpack. I don't think my backpack provides enough protection for the computer. But with this case it does. Additionally I can slide my computer in and out of the case in the backpack without removing the case with the handy velcro opening. Pretty Awesome! In terms of weather profing, since this is an inpack case for my purposes its not that big of a deal. So if you are a college student, or really anyone who carries stuff in a backpack, this case works well.

            I was looking for something small for my 13" laptop. The sleeve fit perfectly, but you can't really use this by itself (or with the available shoulder strap). For one, it doesn't full seal in your laptop. There are gaps in the Velcro that would let the elements in. Also, the handles are thin and attached the the edge of each side, not in the middle of each side. So it doesn't hand comfortably from your hand. I ended up bringing it back and getting a lightweight bag designed for MacBooks elsewhere.
