Comments about Outdoor Research Oasis Sombrero - Women's:
This is the hat I wore backpacking in Kauai along the Kalalau Trail. It was amazing for keeping the sun off my head and I would highly recocmend this for sunny hiking. The darker color under the brim cuts down on glare, too. The stiff brim did make a few things difficult:
1) It caught high winds and was often blown off my head despite the chin strap. The chin strap was long enough to secure to my backpack's shoulder strap so it never went far.
2) The back of the stiff brim hit the top of my backpack unless I flipped it up.
3) The stiff brim also makes it a little awkward to stuff in a backpack when not in use.

I've used this hat for 4 years for hiking, sailing, canoeing, from heavy bushwhacking to casual farmer's market jaunts. I've taken it across the US and to Italy, and it kept me cool and shaded. The hat wicks moisture well, has great coverage, and stays put. The wide brim maintains shape and is easily hand-washable.

Bought this hat for a trip out to Death Valley and Yosemite National Parks. I was looking primarily for sun protection but this hat also kept me dry during several rain showers. The chin strap is great to keep it on in the wind (I hadn't anticipated all the wind out there) and when I want to take the hat off, the chin strap let me hang it down my back for easy access (no need to stop to stow the hat in my pack). It was easy to pack flat in my luggage and the wide rim kept the sun off my face and the back of my neck. I bought it for hiking, but now that I am back home I think I will also use it when I am out working in the yard. I really like this hat!

I love this hat! It performed flawlessly on a 7 day raft trip on the lower San Juan River in southern Utah (in August!) My head stayed cool, and it kept the sun well off of my face and neck, even after getting soaked during a water fight. The brim is sturdy, and never sagged (even when everyone else's hats were, and all 19 of us had wide-brimmed hats). It fits well enough that you don't necessarily need the chin strap, but it really anchors to your head when the wind kicks up. I'm a young 20-something, and this hat isn't something I'm afraid to wear out into public (unlike the big hat my mom used to wear).
My only complaint is that it couldn't quite resist staining from the mineral-rich river water, but I've grown to like the reddish tint.

I've worn this hat for outdoor work for several years from sea level to 10,000+ feet. It's been machine washed (warm) repeatedly and air dried with no loss of effectiveness or shape. While primarily designed to be a sun hat (for which it's perfect), it also keeps the rain off & keep its shape in the rain. The drawstring is highly functional and has not shredded or pulled loose from the hat. I love the extra-wide brim and feel well-protected from strong sun.
It may not be the most stylish hat around but it could be a very good addition to a traveller's suitcase since it is wash and wear.

Comments about Outdoor Research Oasis Sombrero - Women's:
This is the best hat I have owned. I am in my mid 30's and have been out in the sun since the day I was born. So my face has skin damage and last year I was diagnosed with skin cancer spot on my nose that was able to be removed. I have to wear a hat everyday when I am outside. This hat is comfortable and holds its shape.

Comments about Outdoor Research Oasis Sombrero - Women's:
I am a very pale archaeologist working in high desert and sagebrush steppe. I bought this hat specifically to keep me from burning during daily exposure to the sun. I have used this hat almost every day for the last four months and it has been marvelous! Recently, I hiked through several rain squalls and it kept my head pretty dry and the brim retained its shape. I've used it walking through thick brush and woods as well and it stays on my head and has held up against sharp branches without a scratch. I also have a larger head which makes finding hats that aren't too tight difficult but the adjustable elastic band makes it very comfortable. This is also one of the best looking wide brimmed hats I've found to date that can be shoved into a backpack.

I bought this hat to replace my old straw gardening hat. Then I did Moab wearing it. Then I wore it hiking in the rain. I often wear it just to run errands in the summer because it really provides great protection and is easy on/off with the adjustable chin strap. Next it's covering me in France. I am glad the brim is stiff. I don't want the hat to flop into my eyes. While a wide brimmed hat is not made for, say, speed-boating, with the chin strap cinched, I don't have a problem when the wind blows hard (and it gusts hard on my Utah mountain!). Even if you weren't thinking about getting a hat, you should get this hat. And maybe get one for all the gals you like too.

My wife loves this hat. We live in Dallas, TX and have endured 35 days in a row so far of 100+ degree F days. She said it protects her face and neck from the sun while keeping her head cool. She hasn't washed it yet so we do not know what will happen but it seems to be made well and of good quality.
