Comments about SmartWool Microweight Crew - Men's:
I purchased the Smartwool Microweight crew as all weather all year wicking layer. I'm a tree huggin' commuter cop whose daily adventure requires body armor and a loaded dutybelt. Much like wearing a loaded pack all year with polyester! The Microweight wicked, was feather light, and was comfortable in fluctuating climate control. However, the crewneck turns into a boatneck after minutes on, the wool is unravelling at the seams, and pressure/ contact points wear fast. Not worth the cost.

I love this shirt. On a 3-month bike trip in New Zealand I washed it twice. It never smelled. This shirt would be perfect if it didn't develop random holes. I returned it to REI for a new one thinking I just got a shirt with bad stitching but my replacement shirt developed holes ever quicker. My wife's long sleeve Smart Wool also developed random holes. I'm going to try other brands to see if they're more durable.

A great shirt at a not so great price. I wear mine all the time. No itchiness, warm when wet, resists odor, light-weight and durable. If I was made of money these would be my only t-shirts.

I use this shirt for backpacking and spring through fall trail and road running. I love it. I personally think it's more comfortable than synthetic and my wife appreciates the fact that it doesn't stink like synthetic. It is also softer than synthetic - no chaffing. I'm a believer!

Good shirts, smartwool is always comfortable. You can wear the shirt for 5 days of hiking and it doesn't smell too bad, excellent odor control.
The durability is poor, my hipbelt on packs wears through these pretty quick.

Comments about SmartWool Microweight Crew - Men's:
If you don't know it already, Merino wool is non-itching, has not wool "stink," and can be machine washed and tumble dried.
The new "micro" weight from SmartWool is simply fantastic.
It allows wool to be used as a classic summer tee shirt for the first time.
Besides having a definitely "cooler" look than cotton or synthetic, wool has some very practical advantages, particularly for the traveler.
Wool is naturally very resistant to picking up body odors, which means travelers don't have to carry so many pieces or worry about being stuck in this tee shirt way longer than ever expected.
Although wool is notorious for drying out slowly, all you have to do is roll it in a towel after a sink wash and then walk across the towel to "express" the water. It will then dry as fast as a synthetic, and if any dampness remains, it isn't the cold, clammy dampness of a synthetic - it is highly wearable. If you want to be sure it will be dry, wear it to be - it won't be uncomfortable - and your body heat will dry it out. (Also a good tip for socks.) If you do this with synthetic, it will feel cold and clammy.
The micro-weight is simple the most functional weight available for all season use. In this weight, no more need for cotton or synthetic tee shirts.
When SmartWool first came out with these pieces, the tails were too short, and after a washing became annoyingly short (yes you can machine was and tumble dry, but there is a slight shrinkage the first time). All versions for the past few years at least have had extra long tails which shrink just right.
Please note that in this micro weight, the fabric is thin enough to allow some minor translucency. Not a problem in black, more of a problem in lighter colors, if you have any doubts, try it on first.
I like narrower collars like those on Under Armour products - that gives me a more trim look. But honestly the SmartWool collars aren't any wider than the average tee shirt.
Since the tails are long enough, I buy one size DOWN for a trimmer look, and the body still fits great. They aren't oversized, it's just that if I try this trick with some base layers, the tails get too short and start pulling out. So I recommend that you should try your normal size plus one size down to see which works better for you.
Finally, since SmartWool is now printing directly on the wool (at least some information), they should get rid of the leather tags in the collar. Tags are SO pre-millenium.
Note: after sink washing, do NOT hang up to dry, wool stretches! Lay it down on the end or your bed and turn it over to a new spot once during the night if you wake up anyway.

When I first started wearing Smartwool t-shirts for hiking four years ago, people looked at me like I was crazy. Wool?? In July?? Are you nuts?? Once you try it, you'll never want to go back to synthetics. Soft, comfortable breathable, cool when it's warm, warm when it's cold. It does require a little extra care... it's not as burly as synthetics. But with proper care, it'll last a long time, and the trade-off is worth. Those Smartwool shirts I tried out in 2004.... I'm still wearing them, and they still look great!

Comments about SmartWool Microweight Crew - Men's:
Love Smartwool products in general but REI picked the two worst color choices out of the five that Smartwool offers. The nickel (stripe) is just plain ugly and the black (which I bought) is too hot if the sun is out, so you're limited in when you can wear it. The Smartwool website shows three other lighter colors including a light blue and silver, which, if I'd known about it in the first place, I would have bought. Not getting my [$] worth from a black wool shirt, even if it is light. Shirt will shrink a bit after washing, so take that into consideration when trying it on.

I have a drawer full of these great shirts... I personally like the black ones better because the grey shirts are really just alternating black and white strands instead of true grey. I have taken these to the Central America and have never felt more comfortable drenched in my own sweat! I even use these as my everyday undershirts and nobody is the wiser. I love the fact that I can just strip of my work attire and not have to change my shirt at the gym. Conversely I sleep in them too ;-)

Comments about SmartWool Microweight Crew - Men's:
Merino wool is amazing. It wicks, doesn't itch, doesn't retain odor, and feels much better against the skin than synthetics. I've worn this shirt for as long as two weeks in the Himalayas without laundering or smelling bad. In fact, it probably could've gone another week or two if necessary. Merino can seem expensive compared to synthetics, but a bargain when you consider that you can get away taking one merino piece instead of several synthetic pieces on a long outdoor trip. Smartwool says that you can put it in the dryer, but I always air-dry mine flat on a towel.
