Great Value, but Odd Clip Design

Comments about NiteRider TL-5.0 Rear Bike Light:

The light itself offers great value and bright visibility w/o blinding, but I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the odd clip design. I first mounted it right-side-up (with the little belt clip snapping firmly down into the seatpost mount). I then realized while trying to remove it that there is a SECOND clip-in mount that allows the belt clip to be removed from the light body (though there seems to be no reason to do so--either a vestige of earlier clip design or perhaps for use with optional mount). The problem is that this second click-in connection is far less secure--I was able to simply push DOWN on the mounted light and have it fall off the bike (leaving the belt clip still securely attached to the bike mount). I like the light overall (better than the Cateyes in the same price range), so I will probably simply epoxy the belt clip into place so it can't fall out. For now, I have mounted the light upside-down to prevent it getting jiggled or knocked out.

If you can spend a little more money and don't mind a vertical mounting position, the Planet Bike Blinky 7 offers better performance at the same weight (slightly bigger body). If only its on/off switch were easier to push!

Comments about NiteRider TL-5.0 Rear Bike Light:

On the second use, I hit some rough roads and the lens popped off. Before I could retrieve it, a vehicle ran it over. I think it makes sense to spend a little more and get a better product.

Comments about NiteRider TL-5.0 Rear Bike Light:

It's only attribute was it was cheap. That should tell you everything. The blinking modes are slow and terrible. It's not really that bright. The clip does not secure it well to your saddle-bag loop at all. Lost it within a week. The only good news is - it's lost. Yay, now I get to replace the stupid thing :)

Comments about NiteRider TL-5.0 Rear Bike Light:

Purchased this light about a month ago, put it on my Xtracycle's light loop as a way to be seen on my early morning rides to work. On the second day riding home the lens came loose and dropped the lower battery and the seal. The lens remained on the light and fell off in my driveway. After several days of looking out for the seal I gave up on it. Using a hair tie I secured the 2 components together and figured the next time I made the 120 mile trip to the nearest REI I would exchange it. Well today the exchange possibility became null. The light managed to fall off somewhere along my 2 mile commute to work. Quite possibly the worst [$] that I have spent on my commuting gear. Guess I need to find a GOOD replacement before mother nature puts my morning commutes back in the dark.

Comments about NiteRider TL-5.0 Rear Bike Light:

I like the flashing patterns and brightness of this light. However, from the first time I installed batteries I haven't been able to get the red plastic lens to click securely into place. I was constantly picking up the lens and putting it back on, until it's most recent fall resulted in it becoming cracked and the yellow gasket getting lost. The light also falls off the clip.

Comments about NiteRider TL-5.0 Rear Bike Light:

I'm a graduate engineering student in Atlanta and needed a light for commuting around campus. I probably spent an hour comparing tail lights in the store and bought this one for the side visibility, price, and built in clip. Contrary to what one reviewer said, the light does have 5 LEDs. Three large rear facing and two smaller side facing ones. The light has a built in clip that slides into the mounting bracket. The advantage of this design, is that when the light is removed from the bike, I can clip it to the outside of my pack where it doesn't take up space and is instantly accessible. Unfortunately, the clip can be installed in the mount two ways but only one way is right. When properly installed, the mount clicks and is very secure. I didn't find any instructions, so you have to realize this yourself. The mounting bracket itself could be improved. It's a plastic ring tightened with a screw that comes with rubber shims so you can get a tight fit on different size tubes. The Cateye lights have the best mounting bracket but I'm only installing this once so I can overlook the extra time required to get it set up. This light is much better than it's 3 out of 5 average would indicate and can't be beat for the price.

I replaced the one that fell of rear rack (see previous review).

I drilled a small hole in the clip. I then rain a twisty tie through that hole and holes on my back rack. This seems to have solved my problem of this light falling off.

I don't fault the light clip for falling off. It's just that the rack and this light were not made for each other.

The first time I used this I had it clipped on the back of my new Topeak Explorer MTX Rack. Maybe I should find a better place to clip it on. Possibly my CamelBak pack or on the back loop of my Novara Commuter Rack Trunk. Considering a replacement for my lost one. Not sure if I would recommend this, but right now I will say, "Yes," and may give it another chance.

Bike light and walking lights Very bright with side lights Light weight and easily removed from bike. Has clip that can attach to pocket, belt, etc. Less expensive one were much less bright but what did I expect for [$]. Is bright than the $15 dome shaped LED rear light. 4.5 stars (less for no AA battery) and likely only water resistant.
