Comments about REI Half Dome 4 HC Tent:
I have used this tent for over a year now, and have found it to be an all around great tent. I have used it in varied terrain and conditions, which have ranged from ocean beaches with warm temperatures (great ventilation) to 7000 ft. elevation mountain camping with temperatures down into the upper teens. Although not a 4 season tent, I found it to be acceptable with light snow loads and moderate winds. I have found myself stretching the limits with this tent, primarily because of it's simplicity to set up (2-3 minutes with footprint and fly), it's great performance, and it's roominess. Although not my first choice for a backpacking tent, I find it a good choice when I go hiking with 2 or 3 of my children- we can all fit into 1 tent that is very versatile and relatively light in weight considering the roominess. The tent has proven to be very waterproof(I use it with the footprint), as I have used it during a week of very heavy rain and strong 50+ mph gusts of wind (the guy lines did require some tightening as the winds picked up). The only downside I have been able to identify is the design of the rainfly/vestibule; I found that in the windy/rainy weather, the rain tended to get into the tent while entering/exiting. Additionally, I find the vestibules to be too small, especially when occupied by 4 people; it makes the tent a little tight even with 3 of the people being children (8-12 yrs)... it would be nice to be able to store more gear in the vestibule areas instead of inside of the tent. Overall, this has been a great tent that I would have willingly paid more money for... it's a steal at the price(I bought it on sale for about $200).

Comments about REI Half Dome 4 HC Tent:
we are avid backpackers, spending sometimes 3 weeks at a time in the wilderness. So our tent is our home away from home. we upgraded from our REI 2 person tent to the 4 person when our son came along. our best-friend is usually with us on our trips, and the 4 person is perfect size. It is a bit on the heavy side, so its a good idea to break-up the weight. But i like the design, not so sure on the connected hub design on the poles, I liked it better when they were not connected.
Never had a problem with the fly, waterproof, nice window, better design now.
We have been happy over-all with it, BUT we are on our 3rd tent in 2 years due to ZIPPER FAILURE! and now this one is doing the same thing, hard to zip up, and the zipper seperates after its zipped. we can only use one door. again. we are always careful; undo the zipper all the way, try to keep it clean. etc. and still zipper problems. we even had this tent "fixed". so, once again we will have to return it. i have never had zipper problems before.
I think this tent works well if it has low to moderate use.

Comments about REI Half Dome 4 HC Tent:
I bought this tent to add on to my first tent. My first tent was the Half-Dome 2. The HD2 was great when it was just me, but it was too small for two people and gear. I loved the HD2 so much that I upgraded to the HD4.
I can set it up by myself in just a few minuites. The interior is huge, and very spacious. I have no problem fitting up to 3 people with their gear inside the tent. I have no complaints about this tent.

Comments about REI Half Dome 4 HC Tent:
I am touring for several months by motorcycle and purchased this tent for camping. This tent is a great size for me and my gear. I move my gear from the bike to the tent at night.
I did ten nights in Tombstone AZ. One afternoon there was a five minute, heavy hailstorm. I was concerned about how the Rainfly would stand up to the onslaught. No rips, runs, or tears, even after this heavy storm.
The poles have slightly warped in a couple of places due to heavy wind. These are slight bends, not creases. Over time this might become a point of failure. I had to buy extra stakes and tie-downs to secure the tent in the prevailing wind conditions. These were cheap at the big-box discount store. I also added a wind-break to try to hold down the assault. (See photo)
All in all, very pleased with the construction and setup of this product. Like many others have said, I have found the zippers to be a bit sticky. I'm going to stop at an REI store to get something to help.

Comments about REI Half Dome 4 HC Tent:
Bought this tent because I wanted a lightweight, easy to set up tent for the family. It fulfills all those goals very well.
As a bonus, it also is surprisingly sturdy. The first trip was a carcamp in Rocky Mtn NP in the fall. We had gusty 30-40mph winds, with mixed rain and snow. Half the campsite packed up between midnight and 2am, but the Halfdome kept us perfectly dry. One of the pegs came out and it nearly collapsed, but upon replacing the peg with encouragement from some boulders piled over it, the tent withstood the weather remarkably well.
The only quibble I have is that the six pegs supplied aren't enough to pitch the tent. The inner needs four pegs, one at each corner, to get it unwrinkled: the fly needs four pegs in any kind of wind. Still, four more pegs aren't very expensive.

We bought some of these and a few of the 2 HC's for our Scout troop and have used them on several outings over the past year. So far, we love them! We have had one pole split due to rough handling by an inexperienced Scout, but other than that (knock on wood) they've had no mishaps. They kept the rain off in the Smokies, even with poorly-tightened guy lines. We even had the misfortune of riding out a 40MPH+ midwestern wind storm in them without a single problem! All in all, great stuff.

I work in the Outdoors year round, and my summer job takes campers out on two week treks on Isle Royale National park.
A Very waterproof tent, Was in this tent during 2+ inches a rain per hour storm and watched the tent get submerged in about 3 inches of water. Statyed completely dry during the flash flood.
Zips take alot of abuse from the teenage boys that i oversee, but they tend to break down earlier than most tents i've put in use.
Great Tent, just be easy on the Zips, fit four 15 year old boys in it comfortably all the time.

Comments about REI Half Dome 4 HC Tent:
I had this tent set up in about 5 minutes, then another 10 minutes to get the rain fly on properly. While sleeping in the tent the wind blew right under the vestibule and through the tent, making for cold nights. The rainfly is of incredibly poor design and didn't keep water from entering the tent next to the vestibules. When I was out of the tent a strong gust of wind collapsed the tent to its side, sucked the rainfly off, then picked the tent up into the air and blew it away. I searched all over the area for it to no avail. REI says that weather doesn't factor into their guarantee. Well what good is a tent if it cant be guaranteed to survive weather? Now I am out [$] for the tent and wish I had purchased a more aerodynamic tent. If you plan on camping outside, this is not the tent for you.

Comments about REI Half Dome 4 HC Tent:
I will start with the cliche of "I have owned a lot of tents!" anyone who has any problem with the setup or layout of this tent either has unreasonable expectations or should just stay out of the woods. It is a perfect tent in every way besides the fly will drip water into the tent if it is raining.... don't really get that design feature. other than that, i set this tent up by myself with tying all the knots in the lines, etc for the first time in about 4-5 minutes. the fly vents that stand up are a really cool feature and it is nice to have that little window to see if it is a racoon or a bear.
