Comments about Gerber Gator Folding Wood Saw with Sheath:
This saw is not designed for heavy duty use. It is one of the lightest saws to carry while backpacking. In many areas of the backcountry there are laws stating that you may only collect downed wood. That is fine until you get to an area that is so picked clean that the only things around are 20 foot logs! That is where this little gerber can really come in handy. I have hacked 6 foot chunks off downed branches with ease with this little champ.
The only problem comes when you rely too heavily on the saw. If you open an close it a lot and change the blades often the folding mechanism can start to loosen up. I was in the Ansel Adams Wilderness collecting firewood when the folding mechanism came apart, launching an internal part down a gravelly hill. I never found it and the saw was useless after that.
Another issue I had was with safety. Since it isn't shaped like a traditional saw and the blade is fairly short you will have to use some interesting techniques while cutting with this saw. I slipped one time and slashed my leg open. It didn't go very deep but it left a nice scar. THis happened because I was kind of crawling around the log to saw in at a different spot.
I will be buying another one of these for my next trip because the 8oz weight can't be beat. Again, the saw is good if you are in a pinch. And if you don't want to look like you are in the forestry business while collecting firewood. If it startes to loosen up or not want to close easily try to fix it or better yet, just buy a new one before you go on your trip.

Comments about Gerber Gator Folding Wood Saw with Sheath:
Brought it winter camping in BWCA. The second day the saw blade bent backwards and split the handle assembly in 2. I used it to cut logs and thick branches (the things I need a saw for, small branches just use hands), but I didn't abuse it. I am very dissapointed with this product for 2 reasons:
1) I trust (or used too) the quality of products at REI.
2) I own a gerber knife and love it, so I thought the saw would be of equal craftsmanship; not so.
don't depend on this saw to work, especially in a situation when you absolutely need a saw.

Comments about Gerber Gator Folding Wood Saw with Sheath:
I have owned and used this saw for years, it is very light weight and durable, I first sought out a good functional saw that could handle larger than its size tasks for backpacking primarily.
However, I now own 3, Why? I find its great for all purpose work in landscaping too....its ability to cut better than many of the larger home tools......it works just as well for camping, even woodwork timber framing! I have poor dexterity in my hands, yet is light and the grip is comfortable. It has easy to clean exchangable blades and resists water corrosion well.Great for the elite tool pack at home or in the wilderness!

This thing makes quick work of setting up log slides for snowboarding. Its a little too flimsy to abuse it, but its light weight and fits in the cargo pocket of my snowboard pants. Every jibber on the hill should pick one of these bad boys up. Build Logs. Ride the Beav!

Blade snapped the very first time I used it. I'll just stick to the saw blade on my multi-tool in the future, at least it is durable.

Well this thing got the job done once I finally opened it. The blade is super sharp and can take down many small trees, but it is very hard to open and close and you can't afford that sometimes when you're on the trail. But loosen the knob on the other side it opens easily but then you have to tighten it again. But even through that I'll give it a thumbs up.

Comments about Gerber Gator Folding Wood Saw with Sheath:
I used this for cutting small trees/branches (less than 2" dia.) in trail maintenance and camping. It is very sharp, cuts quickly and is light and easy to stow/carry. On my first one the hinge joint fell apart. I got a replacement and was very careful with it, but it failed after a few uses. The plastic simply can't handle much stress.

This item is very light and packable and the blade very sharp and useful. My issue with this product is the locking mechanism, which is very flimsy and not easy to maneuver. I came close to cutting myself several times while trying to hold the button down and manipulate the blade to align with its slot properly. I ended up bringing it back to the store.

Great product! You can cut your camp a sizable woodpile in short time with this little saw.
The blade is a little bit flexible, and proper technique is important. With thin blades as on this saw or on the Svens, you must let the saw do the work: force the blade, and it WILL break or bend. I did end up with a "hot spot" on the inside of my thumb from holding the handle, but no blister.
For the weight and the size, it's a winner! I like the Sven saws too, but at twice the weight they haven't won me over.
