Very nice scale

I purchased the Alpine Digital Bicycle Scale specifically for weighing backpacks at my Boy Scout Troop where I'm an Assistant Scoutmaster. This scale was purchased as a replacement for the REI Compact Digital Scale (luggage scale) that stopped working after one month. I had originally purchased the REI Compact Digital Scale since it costs 1/2 as much and was rated for 100lbs. When it stopped working, I returned it to REI (no questions asked) and decided buy the much more expensive Alpine Digital Bicycle scale. The guys in the REI bikeshop at my store use it for weighing bikes as well as packs and strongly recommended it as a solid unit. I have owned it for about a month and have found it to be easy to use and versatile. It also seems to be fairly rugged and I expect good service from it. Although I originally passed on this unit due to it's cost, now that I've bitten the bullet and purchased it, I'm satisfied that I have a unit that will last and do what I need it to do.

Works Great

I bought this to weigh my backpacking gear. I have always been curious about how much I carry and now I know! It really helps already to start shaving weight. To weigh lighter things just put them into a little ditty bag. Goes down to ounces so it is perfect for the little stuff and the entire pack when I am done.

Great Product

I have been trying to lighten my backpacking load. I bought this to measure all the items within my backpack. I like the option of being able to select between lbs (with decimal), lbs/oz & kilos. It is easy to hold and read while measuring. It would be a nice feature to have it freeze the screen after it reaches the final weight, instead og going back to zero after the load is removed.

Like others, i wish you could hold the reading

its a professional grade piece of gear worthy of the price. but if you dont have a high place to hang it or a place at all when at the car, someone has to brace this thing with both hands high enough to keep an expedition pack off the ground while another reads it. if you are talking a 50+ lb pack its difficult to do. if it could freeze the reading even for 30 seconds you could just lift it high enough to get the pack off the ground and then look at the reading, instead of shoulder high.

Great scale, lasted about 6 years before breaking

I have loved using this scale, and like the switching between metric and English wts. Easy to read, auto-shut off good feature. I have another scale more accurate for items under 10 lbs. Only complaint is that the lower hook became disconnected from the device and I cannot figure out how to reattach far up the cylindrical metal tube - I might try some more, but might just buy another. It is pricey at $70 compared to other scales and would expect it to be more bomber, but it did perform great for over 6 years.

If your serious about pack weight

If you are serious about knowing how much your pack weighs and in comparing the weight of one product to another, whether biking or backpacking, this scale is for you. Heavy weights or light it is accurate, repeatable, easy to use and rugged. I bought one for this purpose and love it and with the addition of a hanging dish or basket it can help with portion control.

Superbly Made

I bought this to weigh my pack & the stuff in it. I took it to a backpacking party for folks to weigh their packs & it was a great hit. Someone can hold it while someone else puts a pack on it. My plan was to hang it up in my garage & weigh my pack & then decide how much weight I can take out of my pack to bring it down to what I want to carry. I have bikes too, but really don’t need to weigh them.

2nd one has gone bad!

I've purchased 2 of these scales over the years, and both of them quit working for no reason. This second one was sitting on a shelf (without batteries) for a year of non- use, I just put new batteries in it and it's showing Error on the screen.

Great scale.

The best way to lighten a pack or bike. Very accurate and repeatable. It’s works best when you have a hook to hang the scale. It was pricy but worth it.
