  • On belay, slow rope movement runs freely, while falls initiate the braking cam to help the belayer catch and hold a climber
  • While lowering the climber, 1 hand controls the rope to regulate speed and braking, while your other hand holds the brake lever open
  • Stamped diagram on side of Grigri illustrates proper setup for less chance of confusion
  • Works well for rappelling on single ropes while cleaning or setting a route
  • Petzl Grigri can only be used with 10mm - 11mm single ropes
  • Each unit individually tested for quality

by fromGri Gri The Gri Gri is great for Toproping and indoor climbing, however I find it difficult to feed rope while lead belaying. It is difficult to give a dynamic belay during a lead fall.

by fromBefore you buy try..... Nothing against this product, but I think after triing this and then triing the Trango Cinch I will choose the Cinch these are both great tools but if you are looking for a smoother device its the Cinch. But this review is about the Grigri.. Grigri is super easy to use and is reliable. My Grigri has withheld the test of time and wont let ya down..

by fromGood tool I don't know about some of these reviews, but a GriGri stinks for short climbs unless you are a beginner and can't use an ATC-like device, and is amazing for long grade V climbs, like WFLT or South Face of Washington Column. Indispensable for aid climbing, I recommend making the solo modification (look it up online at places like big wall dot com) for solo aid. Also it saves so much time for cleaning traversing pitches, and works great for those 7-hr A5 pitches when your belayer is sure to fall asleep while you move from hook to hook. Good luck getting any rope through this very fast in any big lead falls, it is only rated to be used with 10-11mm ropes, and many guide services have had them fail on skinnier ropes and with clients under 150lbs.

by fromBelay Device I think most climbers know what this device is and have probably used one. I bought this so my girlfriend can belay me more confidently being that she is new to climbing. This is a simple device to use once you have practiced a couple of times. Her main gripe is when lowering the lead climber off of a sport climb it is hard to control their descent speed. It is either too slow or to fast. My advice is that this device should not be used for ice climbing due to freezing ropes, freezing the grigri 'open' and not allowing the cam to lock in the event of a fall.

by fromMost Versatile Device for Warm Weather This is possibly the most versatile belay device out there. The setup of the device allows top and bottom station belaying as well as rappel backup for a new rappeller. One of the only things it doesn't do is a double rope rappel. The auto-locking mechanism also allows for self-belaying though you must be extremely cautious when doing so. When setting up top rope in a new area, I create an N configuration with my static rope and belay myself on the safety line as a safeguard from falling. The cam will stop ropes from 9.7-11 mm though it is only rated between 10-11 mm. Inexperienced users must realize that this is an auto-locking device not a hands-free device, so top-rope belay like you would on an ATC. On lead belay, consult an experienced belayer because the two safe ways to lead belay on a Gri-Gri are a little tricky; do this incorrectly and the climber may get hurt. It also takes a little practice before you become used to the lowering lever and smoothly lower someone to the ground.

by fromGood for certain types of climbing A good device with smooth action. I use this device when doing lots of belays (top roping for large groups) or long belays (route-setting or big wall). However, otherwise I prefer a simple ATC or my Reverso. Those are lighter weight for all-day multipitch and simpler to use. As with all auto-braking devices, beware of user error. Accidents happen because they're more complicated to thread the rope through than simple belay devices. Also, if you're using skinny, light-weight ropes, look into other models of auto-braking devices that are specified for that diameter.
