Comments about Salomon XA Pro 3D XCR Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
I wear XA Pro's as much as I can. I like the different colors each year, so I can correctly match each pair. I run trails when I am not working, or sleeping. All the wildlife I pass on the trail sarcastically sneer, "It must be the shoes!" These shoes bomb down scree, grass, snow, creek beds, and boulders. They grip loose basalt, wet roots, creek beds, any rock, trees and slow animals. They protect my easily injured toes from contusions and hold my heel in a neutral position. I have not rolled my ankle in these shoes for the past 4 years; I am not able to say that about my Nike, Adidas, New Balance or Brooks. The Salomon XA Pro's have outlasted all my other running shoes. I trained in 2 pairs for my last marathon and I am still running in them today. They are warm in the summer, but most shoes are hot compared to sandals in the heat. The non-Gortex version is just not beefy enough for me on the trails. I am convinced that I am a better runner because of the Salomon XA Pro 3D XCR Trail Runner motivate me to run due to their comfort and command on the trail. Plus I believe the wildlife when they comment, "It MUST be the shoes!'

Comments about Salomon XA Pro 3D XCR Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
First I'll start up with that I didn't buy these for running as I'm not a trail runner. I just wanted something more comfortable for general hiking. This shoe has become my staple for 95% or more of all my hiking, winter, spring, summer or fall.
No more issues with laces loosening up, or heel blisters. I was tired of laces coming loose and having to tape up to make sure I didn't get heel blisters when things loosened up during the hike.
With this lacing mechanism all those problems are history.
I use these shoes even in winter with Yaktrax, Kahtoola Microspikes and even MSR snowshoes. Under all these situations, the shoes work great and with the Gortex my feet have stayed dry even after a full day of snowshoeing in wet sloppy snow.
I find situations very uncommon where I feel the need to wear boots anymore.
I bought these early in the summer hiking season last year (2007)and haven't used much else since. The soles are solid enough for me even when walking across rocky/talus areas.
The only caveat is on slippery rocks and roots, you need to be a bit cautious as the soles don't seem as grippy as some. Granted nothing works great under those conditions but true boot/lugged soles seem to grip a bit better.

Reside in Northern Sierras, great shoe for running the local trails. Just returned from St. Lucia, rainforest lived up to it's name. Only thing dry was my feet. If these don't give you enough traction in the slop you may need to consider chains.

Comments about Salomon XA Pro 3D XCR Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
I suffered blisters on every hike with more "supportive" hiking boots / shoes until I switched to the XA Pro 3D. These shoes have a sweet combination of being light weight yet stable, and the best lacing system I've tried.
I only recently decided to upgrade to the GoreTex version after using the regular version for about a year. I used to wonder, "What's the point in GoreTex on a low-cut shoe? If you're crossing a stream then it is more than likely that you're in deep enough for the water to flow in over the top." Well, I was wrong. After years of hiking I've found that when my feet get wet it is usually when I accidentally dip a toe in the water and then you might as well have submerged you're whole foot anyway.
These shoes kept my feet exceptionally dry during a recent 3-day trip in Olympic National park where it rained every day. I definitely recommend this shoe to blister sufferers like me and to anyone who likes to keep their feet dry.

Comments about Salomon XA Pro 3D XCR Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
I tend to shred trail-shoes like crazy, and love trail running in the muck. These shoes were like a dream come true: light, waterproof, durable, very stable (I have weak ankles), and relatively cool-looking. Also perfect "go-to" shoes for travels in developing countries. Would be 5 stars but they do run a half size small.
It looks like REI plans to discontinue this item, and I really can't understand why given all of the rave reviews on this and just about every other web-site. I am a loyal REI member, but will have to start looking for my running shoes elsewhere. Please bring this item back guys (and offer the "Olive" color ones when you do).

I had a pair of these (the old version) about 5 years ago, but never wore them b/c of their weight. These are completely different. Not only are they lightweight for the stability of the shoe, but they're arguably the most comfortable shoe I've ever worn. I saw they were on sale and jumped to purchase another pair. Great shoes!

I work at a ski resort in Colorado year round, and I've had these shoes for almost two years now. They are starting to wear out, but they have been on my feet constantly during that time.
I have worn them on fastpacking trips, approaches to climbs over scree and talus fiels, hiking all over the mountain I work on throughout the spring and fall while fixing boundary ropes and all summer while working on bike trails.
I have abused these shoes to the point where they probably should have started crying, and they have held up and been great. I have worn them to work for two years now, walking through water and snow on a daily basis all winter long and my feet have always been dry. Get them!

Comments about Salomon XA Pro 3D XCR Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
I bought a pair of these a few weeks before Christmas and waited for a snow dump. A huge snow storm a couple of weeks later dumped about 15 cm on Toronto and I was quickly out the door. It was about -15 degrees below zero and the snow was fluffy the first day and then as the temperature warmed up , the snow became heavier and started to melt a bit the next day. Another cold snap and a good dusting of the white stuff the following day meant an unpredictable - icy running terrain. The shoes chewed up the snow each day and faired well against the icey bottom layer. Crampons they're not, but pretty grippy in any case.
They are warm, they fit well on my feet (which are wide and a bit flat)and they had great traction on the snowy parts and most slippery surfaces. I run on surface streets, through some ravines and a couple of trails, approx 16kms(each run). The rapid lacing system was icing on the cake.
I have tried numerous "winter" running shoes and these are the best by far. I don't know if I would wear them in the summer only because I can see them being way too warm. Other then that, great product from my experience.
