REI Members get back an estimated $ 2.00 on this item as part of their annual member refund.

    The REI Member Dividend

The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.

Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.

Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

    Comments about The Mountaineering Handbook:

This book has completely transformed the way I approach mountaineering and backpacking. It has information that is useful for backpacking, hiking, camping, climbing, and general mountaineering in alpine environments. Its not quite as complete a book as the classic Freedom of the Hills but it takes over where that book left off. This provides modern and cutting edge techniques and tips that are simply left out of the classic mountaineering text.

First off, Connally goes into great detail on the best conditioning and nutrition strategies based on the most up to date science that is available. After reading his sections on conditioning and nutrition I find that I'm a much better athlete and perform better than I ever have. I was following bad advice given by old school mountaineering texts and groups. Not any more.

My one gripe about the book is it seems like its not quite organized as well as some others. It can jump around a bit on topics and can be difficult to follow at times. Overall though, I think every mountaineer shoud own this book just for the modern techniques provided that are simply left out of most mountaineering texts. This book combined with Freedom of the Hills would make a great base for mountaineering enthusiasts. Neither of them are complete books but they compliment each other to where all bases are covered. You will have a thorough understanding of all mountaineering techniques and concepts as well as the most up to date mountaineering strategies and practices. Great book. It will make you re-think the way you do things guaranteed. I now carry about 2/3 the weight I used to carry and am usually lighter than anybody I see in the mountains.

    Comments about The Mountaineering Handbook:

Frequently reminds me of nuggets of wisdom I forgot or didn't absorb from my own experiences. Mine is highlighted and notated and I review it before important outings. I have been able to apply to backpacking, canyoneering, mountaineering, and ice climbing outings. Covers the range of trip activities that basic manuals skip over, including critical banalities like boot fitting specifics, practical on the go hydration and nutrition, and real world navigation that can make or break a trip. The only thing I found questionable was the use of a Yosemite-finish bowline. That knot can be mis-tied into a form that isn't secure. Better to finish a bowline with a barrel knot inside the loop.
