Revitalize your aging jackets
I brought in my 13 year old REI powder jacket to see if there was anyway to revive the waterproof/water resistant qualities that it once had. The Tech Wash was introduced and explained by knowledgeable staff. It was used that day with a few other jackets. The Tech Wash suds went to work immediately and they didn't leave an odor or residue. The jackets were then run in the drier and when fully dry, the fabric had a crispness and almost a sparkle to them. The rain doesn't saturate on my jacket like it had been the past few years. I'm so happy that this product was available. My only regret is that I didn't use it in 1996, when I first moved to Oregon, when my jacket and I could have stayed a lot dryer!
This left a powdery residue
I used this product on a ski suit. I followed the instructions to the letter. After the first wash it was covered in a powdery residue so I put it through another cycle with just water and it still had the residue on it. After washing it a THIRD time i was STILL unsuccessful in removing the majority of the residue. I would love for this to work but I can’t find any way to fix my now unusable ski suit at the Nikwax website, REI or just literally anywhere on the internet.
Great for washing the tent!
Bought this tech wash to wash my Kelty Salida 2 tent, which I bought in 2012 and besides wiping it down, had never actually put it in the wash. Happy to say that it came out as if it was brand new! Dirt and sap stains that had been on there for years were gone. Just note - DO read your tent's washing instructions and be gentle if washing a tent. I did mine on delicates in the wash, and then tumbled dry on two cycles - first on no heat, then on low heat. You don't want to melt fabric.
Works for me!
I bought the Nikwax waterproofing to use on 2 ski jackets, but before I sprayed them I noticed that they both really needed to be cleaned. The Tech Wash was recommended and I followed the usage instructions TO THE LETTER and then used the Nikwax waterproofing. I haven't been skiing yet but when I poured water on the jackets it just rolled off. I read the comments from the motor cyclists about wearing gear in the rain. I don't plan on skiing in the rain and most of my skiing is done in drier snow so even if it wears off eventually, this product will do a great job for me.
Instructions under peel off label
I've used this product for years on my Gore-Tex rain gear to help keep it repellent, along with the the "TX Direct Spray On" to add a new layer of DWR (Durable Water Repellency) when the old layer wears off. I don't use the "Wash in" DWR product, because it's inappropriate for garments with a wicking liner, and would mess up that feature. It's amazing the number of people I meet who complain about their rain gear "Not working anymore." Have you washed it properly (with NikWax Tech Wash), and reapplied a DWR coating (with TX Direct)? The reply is usually "No, I didn't know that would help. I thought I needed to buy a new jacket." It's not "Leaking." It just isn't "Breathing" as designed, due to a layer of dirt causing it to "Wet out." There is a solution! If you own a quality Gore-Tex product, clean it and treat it according to NikWax's instructions. As for the old post saying there are no instructions, they are under the peel off label. Watch the video. Then enjoy watching the water bead up and roll off once again, as your old investment in rain gear continues to pay dividends! It just needed a little TLC.
Clarification
Some of the reviews here mixup the water repellent with the "Wash". The Wash cleans the garment. That is all. If you want to repel water, you need the other product and should look at its review page.
Right thing for the job!
I used this to wash my patagonia nanopuff that I've had for over ten years. I've tried washing it with other detergents in the past without good results. I washed the jacket in the sink following the instructions on the bottle, and the water instantly turned brown. I think the jacket is probably as clean as it's even been, and with pretty minimal effort! This was definitely the right product for the job.
Goose down bag from 1972
I used this product to clean the goose down sleeping bag I purchased from REI 50 years ago and the result is terrific. It fluffed up very well. Plan to get more use from this outstanding sleeping bag hiking in the Rockies and the Sierras this summer.
Cleans expensive waterproof gear well
My husband and I have multiple waterproof jackets that we very much want to last for many years. In the past I would wait untill there was no question these items were DIRTY untill finally washing as the waterproof material is expensive and delicate. I found this product when the tags on our jackets said to only use cleanser for waterproof items and I knew REI would steer me in the right direction. When I first remove the jackets from the washer they smell clean but very also fragrant with a chemical smell. But no worries, because after hanging overnight to dry, smell completely dissipates. My husband is rough on his gear and this detergent gets all the set in stains and dirt out. I no longer have to wait until Pigpen status sets in to wash our waterproof gear anymore because this stuff is tough enough while being gentle on these materials.
Good for many uses
I started using this for my camping gear years ago. Now, I wash my work clothes (truck driver) and other outerwear with it. Not only does it make clothing (tarps, etc) water resistant and soil resistant, it also leaves them soft and reduces wrinkling. And it cleans well, too!
