The REI Member Dividend
The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.
Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.
Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

Comments about SmartWool Midweight Bottoms - Men's:
For the obvious use of a base layer in the winter these perform perfectly. They stay close to skin (will fit under all but the most hipster of pants) and are stretchy enough so as not to be restrictive. They are even a bit long--at 6'1" the XL had a bit extra leg to them, which I guess could bunch wrong if you don't make sure they're laying flat at the ankles, but I see it as added insurance that everything is covered.
I actually wore them under shorts in July when the mosquitoes got out of control while backpack camping. It looked goofy but the merino wool breathed so well I wasn't sweating at all even mid-day. Then comes cool night and you're set by the campfire, and finally they make a great layer especially if you don't dig the slippery inside of your sleeping bag.

Wow. Reading other reviews, I thought these would be pretty much similar to Patagonia's Capilene 3 product (which left me sweating and cold at the same time - and which felt scratchy to me). These are SO much better. I love the long length (I'm 6'3", 190 lbs, wearing size L) - longer than the Capilenes. I love the feel. And I love how they leave me feeling super warm when needed (e.g., in a down sleeping bag) without feeling sweaty. I have now found the sole piece of warm clothing for my legs when backpacking in the mountains.

These were expensive, so I was hesitant... but am very glad I bought them
I do a lot of maintenance and mechanical work outside in Chicago winters, and these have been great. Very comfortable, very soft, I have never felt cozier working outside in seriously negative windchills (of course paired with other good gear).
I haven't had them very long, so I can't comment on durability, but if you are dealing with being very cold I would invest in these. Perfect for wearing all day long.
I wore these with a pair of work jeans on top and was cozy in below freezing weather (good socks had something to do with it too) I felt better than when I used to wear cheap long underwear AND a pair of pajama pants under the same jeans.

I live in Minneapolis and ride my bike to work year round. This is the first thing that goes on (infact they rarely came off last winter) in the morning. They keep your lower half warm and comfortable. I wore these, work khakis and snow pants as my 3-layer system for my legs. As is commonly said the Merino wool controls odor very well. I washed maybe twice/week or less. Also use them for winter camping. Absolutely love these pants.
I noted that they run big, because they actually run long. They run into my boots and down to my heels. Or I just cuff them up a bit. Not a big issue, just be cognizant.

Impressive ability to keep your bad smell off.

When stepping out into 31 deg weather in the middle of the night I was very happy that I bought them.

Comments about SmartWool Midweight Bottoms - Men's:
I used the midweight long underwear on my recent big game hunting trip in the Colorado mountains. I had used synthetic long underwear in the past, which worked well but tended to stay damp after periods of high exertion. The Smartwool long underwear wicked very, very well. I never felt any dampness at all despite hiking uphill at 10,000 feet through knee-deep snow. They kept me warm and comfortable through a variety of temperatures and activity levels - never too warm either.
On the downside, I did notice that they were slightly itchy at times.

I bought these last year before I went to the Air Force arctic survival course in Fairbanks, Alaska in February. I was pretty hesitant due to the price but they are well worth it. During the survival school, the temps were down below -30 degrees at night. I slept comfortably in the sleeping bag that the Air Force provided me and inside a snow shelter I built. These things almost feel like they're heated or something.
I live in Anchorage, Alaska and use these things all the time. I fly for a living as well and always wear them underneath my flight suit in the winter when I'm out flying. I also wear them when I'm out snowboarding. They seem very durable. I'm hard on my stuff, but these have held up very well after lots of abuse over the past year. I also have the Smartwool top and a few pair of their socks too. They are awesome. It's amazing how warm that something so lightweight and thin can be.

I slept in these the first night that I received them from the store. I was very impressed. They are lightweight, comfortable, and breathable. I hate sleeping with anything on my legs but these were so comfortable I didn't even notice. They were warm and never rode up on my legs or anything. I'm looking forward to my next backpacking trip with these. I know they will perform very well.
A bit on the pricey side but well worth it.

After reading multiple reviews of multiple legging baselayers this is the one I settled on and I could not be happier.
These things do it all. I can wear them under my knickers and ride down into the twenties, I can sleep in them, I've even worn them under my work clothes on the walk to the train in 0 degree temps and then during my entire shift indoors without burning up.
Smartwool is turly a miracle. Insulates, wicks and never smells. I have even run them up against the chain ring of my bike and not even a snag or a scratch.
If you are wondering which to go with or if it's worth the price; it's these and they are.
