Comments about Old Town Pack 12 Canoe:

I read a lot about different canoes before my purchase. I needed a solo, stabil, lightweight canoe at a reasonable price. This is it and more. I flyfish from this boat while I would not suggest you stand it is very stabil for its size and weight. Add a back support chair to the seat and you are very comfy.

Comments about Old Town Pack 12 Canoe:

This is my third Old Town canoe. Most of my canoeing is solo so this well constructed, very stable and lightweight unit fit the bill perfectly. I am in my 60's and can easily carry it, lift it on and off the top of my vehicle. Very maneuverable and I can stow all of my camping equipment with room left over.

Comments about Old Town Pack 12 Canoe:

I researched canoes and kayaks for a year and then paid full price for this little wonder with no regrets.

Initial stability is excellent--I stepped into the boat off a two-foot drop on the riverbank. Spent an afternoon in the creek to learn the boat, have felt pretty comfortable ever since.

I'm 6 feet tall, about 250 lbs., size 11 feet, and sit comfortably kneeling on the seat. Can also sit in the other positions, but feel less control.

I use a 230 cm double-bladed paddle, and have very little difficulty steering even in swift currents. Have paddled it through water less deep than half of the paddle blade, about 5 inches. The shorter paddle is good for shallow water, but I am looking for a longer paddle for the rivers and lakes.

This boat is so quiet that fish actually bump into it. Lots of fun, easy to portage and cartop, and it will carry all the gear you need for a few days of camping.

Love this boat, and my wife doesn't mind at all that I bought it!

Comments about Old Town Pack 12 Canoe:

I have been using this canoe for over ten years and would HAPPILY buy it again. This canoe is a great solo canoe for general recreational use. The price is good and it only weights 33 pounds. It paddles nicely with a long kayak paddle and tracks nicely for a short 12 foot boat. I have used it on BWCA trips in Minnesota up to a week long, as long as I pack light like a backpacker. (However it is not as fast as longer boats so you will get tired trying to keep pace with tripping canoes.) It is extremely durable and bounces back from nearly anything, unlike a kevlar boat. The biggest challenge is that it FEELS tippy until you get used to the boat, especially when you enter and exit the boat.

Also, it is not as fast or straight tracking as the higher end kevlar solo canoes, but that is not the point of this boat. If you need a solo canoe with those qualities then you need to spend 2 grand on a canoe. This is a great recreational canoe, I use it for exploring, fun paddling and fishing.

I have also tried similar canoes from Wenonah and other canoe companies that make some very nice light weight plastic solo canoes, but they usually cost significantly more. If you need a canoe that is even more portable then Pakboat makes some nice lightwight folding canoes and kayaks, some models are available through REI.

If it is possible, then try several canoes out before you buy and find one that you like for your needs.

Comments about Old Town Pack 12 Canoe:

Great little solo boat for small rivers and streams. Very responsive to every paddle stroke. Fun and easy to paddle once you get used to how responsive it is. Easy for one person to load and unload on/off car-top carriers. Enough room for personal gear for a week-end trip or longer.

Comments about Old Town Pack 12 Canoe:

Took this canoe on a 3-day trip down the Buffalo River. The water was up and got a bit choppy at times. It performed fantastic. I used a 270cm double-bladed paddle with no issues. As has been mentioned many times this is a lightweight boat with the capacity to carry plenty of gear. If it ever wears out, I will buy another.
