Comments about Katadyn Micro Filter Water Bottle:
I either bike, fly fish, or hike almost everyday! This bottle is the best, on fishing trips you cannot beat it! My friends will haul water, and I just dip and drink. Even biking I always pass creeks, or lakes, even seasonal drainage ditches. The only con for me, would be counting every time I fill it and drink it. I am a little freaked out about the filter going bad, so I just replace it twice a summer.
I have no idea how the other guy broke his? My guess would be he was hiking with the filter loose in his pack. I really abuse mine, and it is still kicking. I have had it for two full seasons.

Carry where you can reach it without taking pack off. Then unscrew (as you approach stream), dip, screw back on. So easy you will carry less water (and less weight!). You will even throw out water to get a colder drink! Get going again before the bugs gather around you.
If water is scare fill other containers to pour into this one as it empties.
A bit of work, but I have pumped water into another bottle to mix powdered drinks.
Light enough for everyone to take their own. You can carry at least one less bottle, this one holds 20 oz. If water is plentiful you might be able to leave all your other bottles at home, saving even more weight. Backpacking I often carry another bottle and bladder, but often don't use either.
Not cleanable, but you could easily take another cartridge (about 4 oz.) or chemicals as backup.
Does not clog as easily as some other filters I have used.

Comments about Katadyn Micro Filter Water Bottle:
I have owned this thing for about year and have only used it once. While i thought I would try to save weight and "replace" my ancient Pur Hiker, I found that this filter given its capacity and the requirement to fill a separate container with dirty water, (for longer distances between water), was not actually much different than carrying my Pur Hiker and filling my bladders when needed.
As a filter, I think it works great.

Comments about Katadyn Micro Filter Water Bottle:
The major selling point of this filter is the ability to scoop water up on the go without unpacking a pump or waiting for a chemical treatment. I have even stuck the filter directly into a water source (though this is mentioned nowhere in the manual) and used it like a straw. The bottle capacity is pretty minimal, but the whole setup is great if you're going fast and light in areas where you'll find plenty of water, or you're planning to leave your gear at home and rough it but don't want to drink unfiltered water. The instructions state clearly to hold the bottle upright while squeezing/sucking, not upside-down, since as noted in a previous review the filter intake is on the bottom and turning the bottle upside-down makes it useless. The bottle is soft enough that you can pretty well drain it through sucking/squeezing, but it's not as easy as, say, drinking though a regular straw.

Comments about Katadyn Micro Filter Water Bottle:
Purchased several years back. [...] There is a clear plastic sleeve around the filter element- IT BROKE WITHIN A FEW DAYS. I had been packing it on day hikes but did not even use it- when I tried to use it I saw it had broke in my bag, I guess, you know jumping around climbing- the usual. So thought "maybe I was too rough on it?" OK, then I realized "this thing can't handle this?" I'm only a intermediate hiker. [*] happens in the outdoors- outdoor products should be tested for it. Comments about Katadyn Micro Filter Water Bottle:
the water enters the plastic filter at the very bottom of water bottle. so the bottle needs to be completely full each time you turn bottle upside down to squeeze water out,or squeeze really really REALLY hard rightside up !!!

Great filter for sipping while hiking the trail. Quickly refills from streams and springs without have to stop and unpack your primary filter. Was my go to filter on my last weekend hike on the AT. Results have been clean clear water that tastes great.

Comments about Katadyn Micro Filter Water Bottle:
Several years ago, when I was in college, I asked for a water bottle with a filter and this is what I was given. I use it almost every day with tap water. I don't know if it filters tap water, but taste does improve.
I get laughed at alot because of the funny sucking noises the bottle makes, especially when the filter is new. Also, when the bottle is about 1/4 full, I have to suck really hard to get the water up the "straw." Sometimes the bottle will leak in my pack, but not too much, just enough to introduce some moisture. Calcium deposits are super hard to clean off of the cap around the blue vent valve. I also wish this had a cover for the bite valve. I don't like to drink dirt, manure, or whatever else the bottle has laid on next to the trail.
I have no idea how to tell if the filter is no longer working, so I change it once a year, right before the summer season starts. I have used it for stream and lake water and nobody got sick. I even pumped water into another person's bottle, but that took alot of hand strength.
I have had this bottle for years (more than 5) and once, about 2 years ago, if fell off a table and the bite valve stem broke, but otherwise it has held up well through all sorts of throwing around and squish-packing.

Comments about Katadyn Micro Filter Water Bottle:
On a recent trip to Utah, I filled the Katadyn Micro Filter Water Bottle with water from the Fremont River and drank. It obviously works as advertised, because I suffered no ill effects. The filtered water tastes okay- hey, it's not Pelligrino, but it's also not going to give you dysentery.
This gadget works.
