Comments about REI Kilo Expedition -20 Sleeping Bag - Long:
I have been winter camping for 35 years from easy weekends with my kids to solo weeks in Yellowstone in -30 January. The other bags I currenlty own include four Western Mountaineering bags, a Marmot CWM and my favorite deep winter bag, a ten-year-old Moonstone Abruzzi Ridge. I gave up on REI bags because they were never roomy enough for even an average build. Finally REI made a bag that a real person can sleep in. Like ALL REI bags (and most other makers), the temperature rating for this one is not accurate. It is really about a -5 to -10 bag. The design, draft tube, and collar are inadequate for true deep cold. However, it only weighs a little over 4 lbs. If you look at it for what it is, a light, roomy -10 bag with some water protection, it shines. Like all REI bags, the zipper design sucks. How hard is it to get that right? A good zipper makes such a huge difference to the user. I would not trust my life to this bag in Yellowstone in January. But, for most other winter uses, it is a great buy and will actually keep you warm with enough room to wear layers in it, or actually move your legs and arms. When will REI start making its other bags with this kind of realistic room? Most of us don't have 38-inch chests and 20-inch arms, and three or four ounces is worth a warm night's sleep without feeling like we're sleeping in a straight jacket. I've been an REI member for over 30 years, and I love the company. Good job overall. But, stop overestimating your sleeping bag temperature ratings. People can get hurt by that if they actually believe you. And, learn how to make a zipper that doesn't snag. Have you ever tried to zip up a lousy sleeping bag zipper when your hands are shaking and numb? Where I go sometimes, a snagged zipper can mean serious danger. Still, even with its negatives, this is a genuine winter bag for most uses that a real person can actually sleep in for a realistic price.

Comments about REI Kilo Expedition -20 Sleeping Bag - Long:
I recently moved to Alaska and needed a good cold weather bag and looked real hard at the "top of the line" down bags for alot of money. I walked into the Anchorage REI and looked at the Kilo Expedition with the water resistant shell, compression stuff sack, great loft, and alot lesss money. [...]I used it for an overnight trip in the Chugach Mountains where temps dropped to around 15 degrees and the bag was way too warm, I expanded the sides and unzipped the foot end and it ventilated nicely. I slept under a siltarp and there was no condensation in the bag in the morning. Because of the enormous amount of loft it is kinda hard to get it in the stuff sack. I am anxious to see how it fairs when temps get down in the negatives. Seems like a great bag for the buck!

This bag ROCKS! It is the "James Bond" of sleeping bags if you ask me! I'm confident that I could be in the middle of the North Pole sleeping and be toasty warm with this product. This bag allows me to have a great night of sleep every night so I can start my day fresh. This bag it worth every penny!
