Comments about REI Mistral Gaiters:
Very tight fit, even the XL was to small. This is not really a fair evaluation because I had to return them. If you have very skinny ankles they may do.

Comments about REI Mistral Gaiters:
I really like these gaitors because they are lighter and cooler than full gaitors for spring and summer climbing, BUT I have already taken one pair back and about to return my second pair because in both cases the button snaps broke off. This happened on the first climb I did after buying them on 1st pair. One of the snaps just popped right off when I attempted to unsnap them to take them off after coming down to base camp on Shasta. Second pair was the same thing when I tried taking them off after climbing Mt Shuksan. Kept them anyway and on following climb or two later, same thing - another snap broken. Great light, cool gaitors, but they've got to come up w/ something more durable than those buttons popping off. I won't be buying another pair because the snaps are just too easily broken. I'm going to look around and see what other brand shorty gaitors I can get (w/out snaps!).

Comments about REI Mistral Gaiters:
For some reason, REI decided to have the hooks point "up" (as pictured). This means that you have to slide the hook under your laces in order to secure it.
Every other gaiter I've used has a hook that simply hooks over the laces, without requiring you to slide anything under the laces. Strange design choice.

Comments about REI Mistral Gaiters:
The Mistral is a great light weight gaiter, perfect for those warmer hikes, or scree slogged slopes. Made from Scholer fabric, which is both very breathable and water repellent.
The only downside is the shoe lace system used to fasten the gaiter to the bottom of your boots. They don't last very long. A recent hike proved this theory when my climbing campanion tore through the laces on his first outing.
My laces tore 2 years ago and I've been on several outings in snow and scree and my feet have stayed dry and free of rock debris. These are highly recommened when the standard winter/goretex gaiter is overkill.

Comments about REI Mistral Gaiters:
I bought these a few years ago because I was tired of getting dirt and rocks in my boots. These gaiters are perfect. They are lightweight and breathe well. I was dubious by the lace under-sole ties, the snaps, and the hook, but after countless miles and over all types of terrain they've held up very well. After every few trips I'll wash them and treat them with Softshell water repellent; and they remain very water resistant. Once my pair wears out (in a few years) I'll be buying another pair.

Comments about REI Mistral Gaiters:
Great little gaitors to keep out trail debris. The stretchiness fits perfectly over my backpacking boots, the velcro has held up well and the waterproofing keep out splashes and light rain though probably not a downpour. I used to have a pair or ORs which were a little floppy and the snap pressed into my shin which smarted pretty good after a few hours. The snap cover fell off on a hike and I was able to get a new pair in exchange...other than that they've done the job well.
