Comments about Old Town Penobscot 16 Canoe:

I've grown up with this canoe through my early 20's and now I am taking trips in the same canoe with my wife and school age kids. This canoe excelled in rapids up to class III when I was in grad school. It was tough and handled plenty of knocks that reflected my inexperience. It has plenty of cargo space that we used on extended camping trips. It has also spent plenty of time in salt water and the hardware is still in perfect shape. Its secondary stability is great. Portage is a snap with a well placed yoke that is balanced and I can flip it up onto the minivan (formerly the SUV, but life changes) easily. Mad River makes a great boat, too, but this Penobscot 16 is my favorite.

Comments about Old Town Penobscot 16 Canoe:

This is my first canoe. What a great paddle! The canoe is lightweight--I can load and unload it onto the car myself. @ only 58lbs. it is wonderful. It tracks great once a proper J-stroke is used when soloing, which I do most often, even in the wind. Very stable-primary and secondary stability is excellent.

Comments about Old Town Penobscot 16 Canoe:

I bought my canoe used from a white water outfit in VA. I used contact cement to glue a couple of those foam float pads that people lie on in the pool into the bottom of it. This provided a soft place to kneel as well as making it impossible to sink.
For 2 summers I practically lived out of it. # and 4 day camping trips with my girlfriend and all the supplies Lewis and Clark could have wanted. I would take both of my dogs out regularly and always had a great time. The canoe handled beautifully no mater how full or empty it was. Sadly while I was away from home for the winter it was stolen from behind my trailer. I haven't been able so far to afford to replace it. I miss that canoe terribly.

Comments about Old Town Penobscot 16 Canoe:

For years I paddled an ancient Old Town Tripper, a durable but heavy canoe that carries half an army. By contrast the 16' Penobscot is lightweight, much faster in flat water (we have outdistanced 17' canoes and kayaks), and yet good at negotiating tight river turns. My son and I recently did a trip down the Columbia River to near its mouth at Fort Clatsop. We packed lighter than we would have with the Tripper, but the Penobscot handled our our gear with style, taking on only a few drops of water even in the rough waters of Youngs Bay. The shallow arch construction makes the boat feel a little tippy at first, but its secondary stability is remarkable. I felt safer and more in control than I've ever felt in my Tripper.

Comments about Old Town Penobscot 16 Canoe:

This is a great all around boat. It handles very well and is great for carrying a lot of gear for overnight trips.

I have used this boat for a variety of challenges, up to class III+ rapids to week long trips down the river, and have yet to be disappointed by its abilities, handling, and usage.

Comments about Old Town Penobscot 16 Canoe:

I went to Maine on a trip with Boy Scouts as a leader. We were given a Penobscot, while the boys had Old Town Discoverys. The Penobscot was wonderful on the lakes! The bow entry and long keel meant it was fast and straight.

However when we started on the East Branch of the Penobscot River, we realized how unforgiving a sharp bow entry is in rapids. If the boys failed to steer clear of a rock, their canoes (with larger curves in front) would rise up and softly get stuck for a bit. Our strokes were better, but not perfect. If we failed to steer clear of a rock, we would hit hard! Our Penobscot would stop dead instantly, but everything and everyone inside would continue forward. We capsized from this three times one day and had sizable bruises to take with us. Thankfully, the canoe's material was strong and withstood our mistakes. Yet, it had some big dents to take back to base too.

I hated rental canoes and gave up on canoes, got this Old Town as a gift and it changed my perspective on canoes, this is fast, stable and comfortable. The canoe instills confidence. My wife and I are planning our vacation around this canoe. Other canoes where so tippy, this one is extrememly stable. Can't wait for our 5 day canoe trip!!!
