REI Members get back an estimated $ 4.70 on this item as part of their annual member refund.

    The REI Member Dividend

The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.

Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.

Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

          Comments about Yakima DeadLock:

Great security solution. Previous comment speaks to not making it to the inside, the product is designed to lock the outermost bike and it is near impossible to free one of the inner bikes without removing it. Therefore, if carrying one bike on the 4 bike carrier, it should be locked in the furthest position. This is a little awkward, but not too bad.

BIG ISSUE: it has to be physically locked to catch, if you unlock it and pull the key out you can't just press it on and have it lock. You have to insert the key and physically relock it. This is less an issue for the cable than for the hitch pin lock, which feels like it's on but isn't locked down so vibrates away driving down the road. Due to personal lack of focus (duh), I've lost two of the hitch locks.

          Comments about Yakima DeadLock:

Great product overall. Far better solution & much cheaper than anything from Thule. Would be helpful if the cable was longer since it won't reach the first position if carrying only 1 bike. The hitch lock doesn't stay in place at all, and will flip/spin around when driving. A bit annoying, but it won't damage a hitch.

          Comments about Yakima DeadLock:

If you use these locks, don't let the car out of your site for more than a trip to the restroom. These cable locks can be cut in under 5 minutes.

They are not deterrent against a bicycle thief. If there is someone who isn't prepared to cut a cable, yes, they will be deterred, but most urban and serial bike thieves carry a cable cutters with them, and this lock will be cut quick. It provides a false sense of security.

Lost 2 $1k specialized bikes in a gated apartment community in less than 30 minutes away from my car with the car backed against a wall to make bike removal difficult.

            • Hitch mounted racks

            Comments about Yakima DeadLock:

I have been using the Deadlock for 3 years on my Doubledown 4. I keep the hitch lock installed whenever the rack is on my car to prevent someone from taking the whole rack. I typically only use the bike lock if I will be leaving the car unattended for a while but not when I am going straight to a trailhead and back. Many reviewers comment on how limited the protection offered by this lock really is. Well, as my father always told me, locks only keep the honest people out. Therefore, the Deadlock does provide some added protection for your ride(s).

            Service and delivery comments:

My testimony for the Yakima "Love It Till You Leave It" Limited Lifetime Warranty: After 3 years of mild use, the lock mechanism on my Deadlock failed to actuate. I sent an email to customer support on a Sunday explaining the problem. A reply came on Wednesday asking for proof of purchase, which I sent as an email attachment that same evening. On Saturday, a brand new Deadlock was delivered to my door by FedEx Ground. In my experience, Yakima stands by their product and values their customers!

            Comments about Yakima DeadLock:

It was easy to install. You do have to place the bike on the outer most rack. It does require an second cable if your mountain bike uses a 'false top tube' for mounting on the rack. The issue we had was the cable loosening over time. When the rack is in the 'down' position, the cable began slipping out of the housing and dragging on the road. We wore away 1/4 of the lock before we realized it had been dragging.
