Has enough room for more than I carry.

I use this bag in concert with the matching rack from MTX. What's great about this trunk? The capacity, the versatility, and the rack mounting system. As for the capacity, this trunk has enough room to haul my binder, notebook, my 17" laptop (more on that later), a sack lunch, plus all the things I used to carry in my pockets like my cell phone, keys, wallet, and iPod. I also pack my calculator, a whole rat's nest of charging cables, my wireless mouse, and the power adapter for my laptop. If I really do a good job, I'm confident that I could get a set of gym clothes in there too. I think you're beginning to get the picture, this thing is HUGE. About the laptop. I have a 17" MSI laptop, it's a great laptop, but just barely too large for fitting in the side pannier. I have to remove my battery and leave the bag partially unzipped to make it work. I'm thinking I might make some sort of 'extension' to make it work better. Anyway, if your laptop is smaller than 17", it should be fine. For versatility, I use this trunk when I commute, but it's also nice when my wife and I go on bike rides on the local bike path. It's got enough room for a whole picnic lunch, plus it's insulated. The side panniers zip up and out of the way when you don't need them. It has a shoulder strap to carry it while you're not on the bike, so I'm sure you could use it for grocery shopping. The mounting system works great. The bag slides on and clips into place, and you don't have to worry about it at all. My only issue with this system is that the plastic rail on the bag doesn't slide very well on the metal slot on the rack unless everything is lined up perfectly. So I can't just pull backwards on the top handle to pull it off, I have to sort of wiggle it to get it to slide off properly. Maybe this will get better with age? So the final question is, what is the trunk lacking? It's not waterproof, doesn't come in a high-visibility color, and when fully loaded, it can be awkward to carry and generally bulky. I don't know how you can design this trunk so well in so many other ways, and not make it waterproof. It's not like the tough materials don't exist, backpacks have been using tough, waterproof materials for years! I know you can buy a cover for it, but why not just build it into the bag? Or offer WITH the bag. I certainly paid enough for it. It may be a small issue, but it's the biggest drawback to me. Of note, instead of buying a rain cover, I just pack a trash bag to cover it up. Problem solved, sort of.The competing Novarra bag comes in a nice, visible yellow. Why this one only comes in BLACK is a little strange. Not a huge issue, since there's reflective tape sewn on, but worth mentioning. This last issue is totally dependent on your bike/dimensions. I've noticed that when I'm using the panniers when I ride, sometimes my heel bumps up against them. Definitely the smallest issue I have with this trunk. So, what sold me on this trunk? The combination of the MTX rack and this bag is super convenient, and the versatility of the zip-down-only-when-you-need-them panniers. And the capacity can't be beat.

Not a good bag

I used these for commuting to work for the past year.... about 3000 miles. These were my first set of panniers, so I was excited. They held all my stuff fine, though I needed an extra case for my pc and it is awkward to carry. One day the bag fell off by rack. Aparently I thought it was clipped in, but it wasn't. I broke my computer. It happened again a few months later (and then the handle tore off). If you get this, be sure the bag is secured properly. It is easy to miss if you're in a rush or installing it has become habit. Besides the two massive holes that have formed on the bottom, here's the biggest drawback: CENTER OF GRAVITY. I recently replaced these with regular panniers that sit much lower. The center of gravity is much lower and as a result, there is a night and day difference in ride quality - much safer and more manueverable. I'm taking tight turns, weaving in and out now just because I can - I would never try that with a bag that sits as high as this one. So, don't get it, you'll be much happier with something like the Novara gotham set of panniers.

Great Commuter Bag

The expandable panniers make the bag a great gym bag, it carries my gym clothes on one side, shoes on the other. It rides well on the rack with the slide and lock system provided by Topeak. The bag doesn't bounce, slides in and out easily. Never tried it in harsh weather though... Don't plan to neither, its nice to have the space last minute. When riding, I use it to carry my wallet and personal effects, and use the shoulder strap when I go into a restaurant or store.

Solid bag for the commuter

I'm a gas free green person. I commute to work and shop with my bicycle in a pretty hilly area. The bag is abit heavy, but it's SOLID. Doesn't sway to throw you off balance. The expanding features are awesome, this bag holds a lot for it's size. The insulated center compartment really works great for day trips and picnics. Don't get the post mounted rack though, if you're going to pack this bag full. It will sway on turns or pumping up a hill. Works great with the Explorer rack I have. The expandable panniers have tie downs to make it more stable. Only reason I gave this product 4 stars was that there is no way to lock the bag to the bike against theft.

Replaced my truck

I have the two year old version of this bag, and I use this bag for everytrip I take on my bike around town. I can't fit a full weeks worth of groceries, but to go any bigger means a real rack and panniers. If I were to take a long distance trip, I would buy a different set-up. As for the grocery trip, I just release the bag from the rack and put the bag under a shopping cart, and run my lock through the rack and bike frame. Just carry some extra grocery bags while in the store, then load up outside by the bike. Oh yeah, sometimes, when FULLY loaded, the rack moves side to side just slightly. This usually requires a slight kick in the right direction.

Amazing what I can fit in here!

I gave up my car and began walking. Soon I realized I was getting back pains from walking 2-3 miles with a laptop and books and things on my back. This bag has been perfect for my bike. My laptop actually fits in the side panniers and never gets damaged on the ride and it fits securely and with a good degree of balance on my bike for the whole ride. It slides off and I can use the shoulder strap to carry the bag into buildings and meetings. There's enough room with the expandable main bag to pick up a good amount of groceries as well. Even in the high winds, I'm not de-stabilized while riding. Very important in the windy city. I highly recommend this!

Great product, bad color.

I use this to commute, shop, and take trips with. It is a great item for just putting around, but be careful. Overload it and it'll throw your center of balance off. I have a busted knee-cap to prove it. Not very durable if it meets the pavement, I have 2 holes in it from one small wreck. Use it with a fixed rack, not a post mounted one, it will sway. For the plus. It holds a bunch of stuff. The center insulated compartment will hold a gallon of milk with some room to spare. The expandable paniers hook into your fixed rack so they don't sway. The slide on\off feature is AWESOME for security.

Off the hook!

I bike commute everywhere, and this thing really does the trick. It's easily removable, and has a shoulder strap. So I easily lug my textbooks around school in it. Then just slide it on the rack when I'm ready to go. The main compartment is insulated, and keeps my beer or wine chilled for up to 8 hours with an ice pack! The only thing I'll say as a negative is that it absolutely does not work with the beam rack system. I have no idea how Topeak expects their shoddy beam rack to hold this huge bag in place. You MUST get the regular rack with it or it will swing from side to side on every turn.

Great Bag

I ride 14 miles each way to/from work during all seasons. This is my 2nd Topeak bag; first one is a bit smaller, still good, but I got this bag b/c it is expandable, holds more gear thanks to the expandable feature for the top compartment. I pack my work clothes, gym clothes, lunch, bike lock, shoes, paperwork in this bag (panniers as well as top section). Holds a lot of stuff; I can't emphasize this enough! On the 1st bag, though, I really over-stuffed one of the panniers with clothing and a top seam ripped. Same might happen with this one if really over-stuffed, but the pannier can still be used on the ripped version, so not a big problem. I'd definitely recommend this bag. And I like the fact that the bag slides on/off the accompanying Topeak bike rack; sooooo easy to use and the bag is fully secured onto the rack. Great product for commuters!

Awesome bike pack

I've had this bag for almost 2 years now, and I found it to be great overall. Granted, I've only owned one other bike pack before this, but I really can't see how it can get much better than this one. There's plenty of room in the main compartment (which is insulated!), plus all the room you get if you use the side panniers. I've packed lots of groceries in this thing. It's very well made and rugged, but the thing I like best is how easily it slides on and off the bike rack. The only cons I can think of is that it's a tad bulky and perhaps it could use some more smaller pockets. These are minor issues for me though. I got it on sale, but I think it's probably worth the full price anyway.

Good spacious bag

I use this bag everyday for everything. It carries my extra gear, locks, rain gear, anything I need to take along. It also expands easily for carrying groceries and carryout from restaurants. I haven't gone camping with it yet, it seems to be tough enough to be up to the task. The only con I have found was the other day when I got caught in a down-pour. The bag and it contents were soaked. Fortunately it was not a problem for me, but you may want to get the rain cover if you ride in raining conditions.
